FORT IRWIN, Calif. – The Fort Irwin MEDDAC Breast Cancer 5K Run, Triathlon and Health Fair took place Saturday, 24 Oct. beginning at 9 a.m. at the Oasis Pool, with the Health Fair taking place at the Resiliency Center. Weather was sunny and cool – ideal for the day’s events, and many community members stayed long after the competition awards presentation to socialize at the Health Fair, which was taking place at the Community Resiliency Center. Free, healthy snacks were available free of charge provided by the Weed Army Community Hospital Social Committee and the USO.
The theme of the event this year was "We are Stronger Together" which participants and spectators alike made real through local pride, fellowship and friendship.
ABOUT THE WEED ARMY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL AND NTC
Weed Army Community Hospital (WACH) on Fort Irwin is home to approximately 500 health care professionals and medical staff providing 24/7 support to the National Training Center (NTC), one of the U.S. Army's largest training areas with over 1,000 square miles of maneuver areas, state of the art training facilities and ranges, with airspace restricted to military use.
Fort Irwin's isolation makes it an ideal site for a variety of NTC training and exercises. Consequently, the Weed Army Community Hospital is a vital pillar in support of the NTC and Fort Irwin community.
A new $160 million, 216,000 square foot hospital, currently under construction, is scheduled to replace the Weed Army Community Hospital in the fall of 2016. The opening of the new facility will mark a significant milestone in the United States Department of Defense commitment to delivering the best possible healthcare to all service members and their families, and underlines the importance of the NTC and the role MEDDAC personnel and facilities play in support of service members and their families at Fort Irwin.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- A Ready and Resilient Service Member Wellness Fest was held at the Presidio's Soldier Field on Nov. 25. The event was coordinated for students of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center to learn about the various support agencies that can assist them or offer services during the stressful holiday season with a focus on Alcohol Awareness and Safety. The goal was to bring awareness to students in different, interactive formats so they will be able to prevent unwanted negative incidents in the future.

A Susan G. Komen representative runs an organization here in North Carolina knock as Biker\'s For Boobs and I offered to paint something for their silent auction. All of the proceeds go towards the Randolph County Cancer Center.
In addition to this GamesWorkshop donated the models for me (and my friends to paint, no photos of theirs unfortunately) for the auction.
I\'d like to give a big thanks to them and I hope that these help earn at least some money for the cancer center.

In Beaune aa late afternoon visit to the Hôtel-Dieu.
Was aware that the courtyard of the building had a roof with multi-coloured tiles, and we wouldn't go all the way to Beaune without seeing them!

The Hospices de Beaune or Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune is a former charitable almshouse in Beaune, France. It was founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of Burgundy, as a hospital for the poor. The original hospital building, the Hôtel-Dieu, one of the finest examples of French fifteenth-century architecture, is now a museum. Services for patients are now provided in modern hospital buildings.
An important charity wine auction is held in November each year (formerly in the great hall of the Hôtel-Dieu).
The Hôtel-Dieu was founded on 4 August 1443, when Burgundy was ruled by Duke Philip the Good. The Hundred Years' War had recently been brought to a close by the signing of the Treaty of Arras in 1435. Massacres, however, continued with marauding bands (écorcheurs) still roaming the countryside, pillaging and destroying, provoking misery and famine. The majority of the people of Beaune were declared destitute. Nicolas Rolin, the Duke's Chancellor, and his wife Guigone de Salins, responded by building a hospital and refuge for the poor.The majority of the population of Beaune were destitute, and the area had recently suffered an outbreak of plague. Having gained permission from Pope Eugene IV in 1441, the hospice was built and consecrated on 31 December 1452. In conjunction, Rolin established the "Les sœurs hospitalières de Beaune" religious order.
The building's design was probably overseen by the Flemish architect Jacques Wiscrère and remained as a hospital until the late 1970s. There is a documentary record of a large range of Flemish and French masons, painters and glass cutters employed for its construction. The facade is today regarded as a superior example of Northern Renaissance civic architecture and a treasure trove of panel painting, given its numerous portraits of Rolin, his wife and members of his extended family.
The Hospices de Beaune consists of a pair of two-storied buildings arranged around a stone courtyard. The building wings are well-preserved today; they contain half-timber galleries and ornate rooftops with dormer windows. The hospital is arranged so that the wings served the office, kitchen and apothecary functions. The nuns and patients were housed nearer the chapel, towards the center of the complex.
The Hospices de Beaune received the first patient on 1 January 1452. Elderly, disabled and sick people, with orphans, women about to give birth and the destitute have all been uninterruptedly welcomed for treatment and refuge from the Middle Ages until today. This Catholic institution focused on healing both the body and spirit of its patients.
Over the centuries, the hospital radiated outwards, grouping with similar establishments in the surrounding villages of Pommard, Nolay, Meursault. Many donations - farms, property, woods, works of art and of course vineyards - were made to it, by grateful families and generous benefactors. The institution is one of the best and oldest examples of historical, philanthropic, and wine-producing heritage, and has become linked with the economic and cultural life of Burgundy.

This week is Deaf Awareness week. In the UK there are almost 9 million deaf and hard of hearing adults of which nearly 7 million are severely or profoundly deaf.
1 in 1000 children are deaf at the age of 3 and currently there are around 20,000 children who are moderately to profoundly deaf covering the ages of 0-15 years old. Only 12,000 of these children were born deaf.
It is important to raise awareness, never underestimate how being Deaf can affect somebody's life. Just learning the alphabet in sign language, or learning how to speak clearly, facing the person you are speaking to, can make a huge difference. Being patient, innovative and calm also helps.
The NDCS have announced that the theme for this year's Deaf Awareness week is "Look at Me".
"This theme aims to improve understanding of deafness by highlighting the range methods of communication methods used by deaf children, such as sign language and lip reading."

As part of our Knife Crime Awareness Week, Greater Manchester Police officers attended Woodhey High School, in Bury, on Wednesday, 10 May 2017.
Officers gave a presentation to the pupils on the dangers and consequences of carrying a knife.
Pupils were also informed of the 'joint enterprise' law. 'Joint enterprise' is when even if it's not you carrying the knife, if you're with someone who uses a weapon to injure or kill, you too could be prosecuted and sentenced.
Officers also stressed that if pupils had any concerns on knife crime, they could speak to their teachers, call GMP on 101, or call Child Line on 0800 1111.
