Qantas' newest toy, The Boeing Company 787-9 Dreamliner VH-ZND definitely grows on you, especially in the right light!
Operating QF422 from Melbourne Airport, VH-ZND taxis past Sheps Mound en route to gate 11 at Sydney Airport on Saturday morning, as part of the familiarization program prior to commencing flights to Heathrow Airport later this month. Thankfully, a pop of light came at the right time!
Anyone who maybe seeing this image may want to get a box of tissues ready as another chapter in aviation history comes to an end as KLM are as I'm typing this operating the final McDonnell Douglas MD-11 passenger flights with this very aircraft, Charlie Bravo heading back home to Amsterdam from Toronto for the very last time. The final MD-11 flights also marks the end of KLM's association of McDonnell Douglas after 80 years.
The flight ends wide-body passenger tri-jet operation, although the MD-11 has been short-lived with other major airlines, KLM has relented until now to keep hold of their MD-11's, however their replacement will come in the form of mainly the Airbus A330.
However, KLM have recognised the importance of the MD-11 that on 11th November 2014, the airline will operate farewell MD-11 operations from Amsterdam, giving people one final chance to see or even the ride of an MD-11.
I'll be honest here, the MD-11 reintroduced the passion of commercial aviation... It was different and beautiful to look at, it was not widely purchased and despite their demand as a passenger aircraft is low, they have become a dependable freighter, even Boeing acknowledged this and decided to close the production line after filling the last orders for the aircraft.
Charlie Bravo, along with sister Charlie Echo have made it to the end, this airframe named after Italian-born Physician and educator 'Maria Montessori', her links with the Netherlands stretching back to 1917 after sounding the Netherlands Montessori Society and a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam. She moved to live in the Netherlands in 1936 and in her later years, she lived in Amsterdam after travelling around Europe. She passed away on 6th May 1952 at the age of 81 after suffering from a Cerebral Haemorrhage, her resting place in Noordwijk, South Holland.
Charlie Bravo was one of 10 MD-11's that resided with KLM, she being one of the last to be withdrawn. She was delivered new to KLM in March 1994 and is or now was powered by 3 General Electric CF6-80C2D1F engines.
McDonnell Douglas MD-11 PH-KCB 'Maria Montessori' lifts-off from Runway 36L 'Polderbaan' at Amsterdam Schiphol on KL601 to Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau (YUL).
