A myopic toddlers view of a farmer's oat field. The storage shed nicely punctuates the beautiful canopy of blue, cloud studded sky.

The inside is the most interesting part of the village church of Avenas in the département of Rhône (southeastern France). Here it is, as promised in yesterday’s upload!
A general view of the nave. The restoration carried out in 1956–60 has been careful enough to cleanse the walls of any plaster, whitewash or paint as may have been applied over the centuries, to find again the sheer beauty and simplicity of the stones that our ancestors used in the 1100s to build their village church.
In fact, the absence of a vault and the presence of a wood frame instead points towards a much older church, and some opine that it was built on instructions from King Louis le Pieux as he rode by Avenas in 824 or 830 (accounts vary), to celebrate the victory of Charlemagne over traitor Ganelon on the Torveon Mountain.

The large glumes enveloping 2-4 glabrous and mostly awnless florets characterizes the spikelet of cultivated oats.

This is the top of the altar, hollowed out for the sacred rites during which the wine was poured onto the bread. It is decorated with five swastikas, which are an ancient symbol of eternal life used in many parts of the world, and which appeared first in the Balkans, some 5,000 years BC.
Composite shot made of 3 focus-stacked exposures. Stack processed with Helicon Focus, Method A.
Oats, known scientifically as Avena sativa, are a hardy cereal grain able to withstand poor soil conditions in which other crops are unable to thrive. Oats gain part of their distinctive flavor from the roasting process that they undergo after being harvested and cleaned. Although oats are then hulled, this process does not strip away their bran and germ allowing them to retain a concentrated source of their fiber and nutrients.
