A mile wide avalanche happened in April 2019. This photo shows several chutes where snow and debris descended. The Avalanche broke loose just outside the Highlands Ski Area and ended at the valley floor. The Conundrum Creek trailhead and parking lot were completely buried in about 40 ft of snow and debris including trees which were uprooted. The slide went through all the un-forested areas of this photo.

These barriers help to reduce the risk of avalanches damaging the town of Wengen from snow that accumulates on the sides of the Männlichen mountain above it.
Happy Fence Friday - sort of!
In honor of Mother's Day, which in theory everyone has a reason to celebrate, I'm posting this lovely Avalanche lily. The species is native to much of the mountainous areas of North America. Their bulbs are an important food supply for grizzly bears, which invest a considerable amount of energy extracting them from the ground.
We made it to the top of the Hermit Trail Hike for some spectacular views. The Trans Canada Highway is below the ridge.
"Fog Avalanche"
While driving up and down countless miles of roads looking for interesting photographic fall foliage compositions, this suddenly appeared. The fog and clouds and light were moving so fast, that every second the scene was different. I loved this dark cloud of fog rolling down this mountainside of aspen trees.

A large avalanche, maybe several smaller avalanches that have combined into a large avalanche. I believe it was triggered spontaneously due to large amounts of snow. A popular hillside to ski but notoriously dangerous
Since December many storms and even hurricanes passed on the Alps. The snow amounts are now very important everywhere in the Alps. The following image from the valley of my mother illustrates well the conditions in the Central Alps:
I heard the boom and the windows in my house were shaking. I glanced out the window in time to see the snow coming down.
First they close the road, then helicopters drop charges to set the avalanche off. That hopefully ensures no one gets buried when the snow comes down.

Glacial runoff at Avalanche Flume in Glacier National Park, Montana.
It was the first day of my visit to the park and one of the feet on my tripod came loose and fell on the bridge just above all the rushing water. Lucky for me, I caught it on the bounce and just in the nick of time before it would jumped into the water. It would have been a long tough week trying to balance the tripod without one of the feet. I now check them consistently. Amazing how easily those little buggers come loose. I was a bit rattled after that and unfortunately I didn't spend the time at Avalanche Flume that I should have. It is a gorgeous place with all the turquoise water rushing through the rocks.

Avalanche Lake is located in Glacier National Park, in the U. S. state of Montana. Avalanche Lake is southwest of Bearhat Mountain and receives meltwater from Sperry Glacier. Avalanche Lake is a 2 miles hike from the trailhead along the Trail of the Cedars.
Stood in amazement watching small cascades of snow descending down this mountain ridge . Really mesmerising seeing how this ridge changed in the high winds and honestly cant believe there was not a full on avalanche .. My images don't do this scene justice ❤️

Walking through Glacier National Park’s Trail of the Cedars feels like stepping into an ancient cathedral of trees, where towering red cedars and mossy trunks lead you to rushing Avalanche Creek.
HFF! (Happy Fenced Friday!) Be sure to look close and see all these snow fences, designed to prevent (or at least reduce) avalanches. There is also what looks like a dwelling and barn above the topmost fence, just above and left of photo center. From there it looks as if there is a road, leading up to some alp pasture land.
My guess is that the fences are positioned quite precisely as a result of long experience with seeing where the snow wants to go.

Avalanche Creek is a beautiful turquoise stream that flows out of Avalanche Lake higher up in the mountains. We did the full hike up to Avalanche Lake, but honestly I would have been content if we had stopped here. This was a very beautiful part of the stream as the turquoise water crashed down over the rocky edge in this very dense forested part of Glacier National Park. This hike was very serene and was a good reminder that the Lord gives us peaceful places to just be in His presence!
I tried to make something of a tough waterfall to shoot. It was not easy to get a comp I liked. This is Avalanche Falls in the Flume Gorge.

A Couple of days after we hiked to the this lake I returned to the bottom of the trail with my son to explore Avalanche creek. I ran into Ranger who was coming down from the lake with a gun over his shoulder. It turns out there was a mother grizzly bear stealing people's backpacks that they had put down by the lake. the Rangers set up an electrified backpack and a trail camera to teach the bear a lesson. They found no trace of the bear or the backpack and were taking the memory card from the trail camera back to review in their office. What we have here is a real life Yogi Bear story where the Modern Day picnic basket has become a backpack.
