The thoughtful Moroccan-Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, a Sadler’s Wells associate artist, takes the art of collaboration as seriously as he does dance. For Automaton, he translates Pilobolus’s organic metaphors into more pressing terms. If the hippy 1960s returned the body to nature, the 21st century has brought it into ever closer harmony with machines. To music that wheezed and gasped like an endearing human-emulating contraption, the dancers embodied creakily evolving robots. These protean automatons developed feelings, then romantic inclinations, communal aspirations (this being Pilobolus) and finally homicidal tendencies, which did for them. — Apollinaire Scherr, Financial Times

Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum is a fantastic little place located in a strip mall outside of Detroit. Where it differs from Chuck E. Cheese is that the machines are obviously a labor of love for Marvin. There are many from the early 20th century, some from Brighton Beach in England, and some automaton created by new artists in the craft. There are the usual pinball type machines, but they are from several decades. I loved the hokey ones that just moved, talked, or scared the crap of me. The little kids wanted the ones that gave out tickets for their skills.

Hope to have this fold completed by the end of September 2011 with several moving parts.

The true legionary of the Roman army, these huge automatons stormed the country side and defeated Rome's enemies as far as Germania.

Unfortunately for the empire the strange mechanisms were distrusted by the new Christian religion and when the religion became widespread the people called for the machines to be destroyed. Aided by the plague that ravaged the army engineers, these huge soldiers soon fell into disrepair.

Steam would have to be discovered again.

D.A.C.T.A. stands for Data Archive Compiler, Turing Automaton. He is Mick's (aka Smolder) personal assistant.
