Highway 99 drivers, this is a glimpse at your future. The steel pipes in the photo are some of the piles that will support the new roadway that will carry southbound 99 traffic between S. Royal Brougham and S. Holgate Street by the end of 2011. Look closely inside the pit and you can see workers welding one section of pipe to the other while a crane holds the top pile in place. The piles will be driven close to 300 feet deep in some locations.

The features commonly examined are defects, inclusion density, layer thickness, and grain size. Having just left the main line at Llandudno Junction, 153353 is treading the first yards of the Conwy Valley line. This initial section runs adjacent to the former coal depot and cuts through an industrial park before passing over the line's only automated level crossing, where I am standing. Once this has been cleared, the line is taken underneath the A55 trunk road before the views of the river and the mountain backdrop become visible.
