ZoomCharts at DevClub.lv: Developing a Javascript SDK
On January 15, 2015, ZoomCharts Co-Founder and CTO Viesturs Zariņš presented at DevClub.lv - a community of Latvian IT specialists that gather monthly and host free talks, presentations, and events to allow the local IT community to share knowledge, network, and communicate. Zariņš discussed the unique challenges faced in developing JavaScript SDK.
Here is a brief overview of his PowerPoint presentation on ZoomCharts, the world’s most interactive data visualization software that will support all your data presentation needs with incredible speed.
What is ZoomCharts?
What defines ZoomCharts advanced data visualization software? It is NOT another HTML5 charts library. It is:
- Interactive
- Fast
- Touch enabled
- Supports big data
A long time ago
DOS 6.2 allowed for:
- 320x240x8bpp
- Direct access to pixels on screen
- Assembler for performance
Today, the Web has finally caught up in the graphics department. Now, we have access to:
- Multiple browsers and rendering technologies
- Multiple resolutions
- Performance that varies by browser and device
Development setup:
- We write in JavaScript
- Commit to GitHub
- Build system in JavaScript
- Debug in Chrome
- Run automated tests
- Like WebStorm (and Vim)
Graphics:
Canvas (fast)
SVG (slow)
WebGL (>50%)
Interactive animations:
Zoom in and out of the graph, drag and drop data, all with your mouse or trackpad.
Graceful degradation:
High FPS (frames per second) lets you scale graphics with low image degradation.
Third party libraries:
- Raphael
- Hammer.js
- Leaflet
- Moment.js
Challenges:
- Responsive design: layouts can shift and look nice on desktop screens vs. not so nice on vertical, mobile screens
- Big screen resolutions: uses devicePixelRatio for sharp rendering, but no hardware acceleration beyond 2048x2048
- Safari compatibility: with 100% CPU, input events are blocked and browser locks up; strange code offers fixes
- HTML on canvas: DOM is slow; basic HTML markup must be parsed and rendered manually; text caching helps
Support:
- Process: TrialSupportBuy
- 1 day issue resolution
- #1 Tell me what I did wrong
- #2 Can you do…
Testing:
- Automated tests on every GIT push
Automatically:
- Compare images
- Record performance
- View errors in console
Interactive testing:
- Next step: record and playback
BrowserStack:
- Interactive mode
- Automated: Selenium API
Debugging:
Chrome Developer tools (F12)
- Debugging
- Profiling
- Timeline
Remote debugging available: developer.chrome.com/devtools/docs/remote-debugging
Future:
- More charts
- Extension API
- Memory allocation tracking
- WebGL
We are looking for statically-typed language:
- Error checking
- Performance
- Superior minification
- Easy to write and read
- Easy to call from JS
Building
Custom build script:
- Compile
- Minify
- Extract documentation
- Embed customer data

APM Terminals Aarhus commenced the construction of phase 1 of its automated gate complex in June 2020. This US$3 million investment will further improve terminal efficiency using advanced technologies.
This is an automated machine that has been 100% developed in house by Catrike. An initial conceptual sketch of such an equipment is done by hand showing mechanical, pneumatic and electronic componentry. Later the sketch is transferred to a 3D drawing using Solidworks, using actual parts and components files in order to detect and constraints, limitations or collisions. An actual simulation with movement is performed. The bill of material is acquired straight from the list of parts form the 3D drawing. The equipment is then built by using a lot of standard components as well as very configurable aluminum extrusion for fine tuning and re-tooling in the future. This machines has been successfully tested and has been in use for a few thousands of frame already. This equipment allowed us to cut one operator's 10 minute cycle time down to 2.5 minutes, allowing us to re-balance our whole fabrication line and gaining 30 minutes of work content per day for the whole line at peak season. Meaning that we could produce one additional frame per day. This is know how and willingness to face any such challenge is one of our competitive advantages that allow us to transfer such a great value to our Catrike owners as well as keep our whole staff busy and keep and grow jobs in America.

Shot with the magnificent Olympus Mju-II. Fully automated as it is, it doesn't offer ISO override, meaning it cannot use most of my stash of expired film. BUT, I figured out if no DX code is present, the camera will revert to a default ISO of 100... which is perfect for my 2005 expired Fuji Superia 400! The quality of the scan is exceptional, no digital compact can touch this.
Yes, that can in front is distracting, butI didn't have the heart to shop it out.

Automated ultrafiltration and concentration system for unmanned virus manufacturing and downstream processing.
At the south-east corner of Howth Head, is the automated Baily Lighthouse, successor to previous safety mechanisms, at least as far back as the late 17th century.
The first lighthouse on this site was built in about 1667 by Sir Robert Reading, and was one of six that Reading had received letters patent to build from Charles II in 1665. The original facility consisted of a small cottage and a square tower which supported a coal-fired beacon.
Parts of the original buildings remain.
In 1810, the Corporation for Preserving and Improving the Port of Dublin took over the operations. The original building's location was high on the headland, so the light was often obscured by fog. On December 5, 1811 a recommendation was issued that the lighthouse be moved south on the headland to Little Baily, or Dungriffen. A new tower and house for the keeper, designed by George Halpin Senior, the corporations’s Inspector of Works, was completed on March 17, 1814. The top of the tower stood 134 feet (41 m) above the sea, and the fixed white catoptric light was provided by a set of 24 Argand lamps and reflectors.
In 1865, the light source was improved from catoptric to first order dioptric. At the same time, John Richardson Wigham had patented a gas-burning light, so experiments with this new system were tried at Baily. A gas works was built at the station to produce the fuel, first from oil, then shale, and finally rich cannel coal. The experiments were a success, and the system was added to nine other lighthouses.
An air horn was installed in 1871 for times of fog, which was replaced with a siren in 1879. The bell was kept as a standby system until 1890. The siren was replaced by a diaphone in 1926.
In 1892, two additional homes for Assistant Keepers were built. In 1902, a system was installed that caused the gas light to flash once every 30 seconds, instead of shining continually. In 1908, the gas light was replaced with one using incandescent vaporised paraffin. In 1953, a larger house was built for the Principal Keeper below the lighthouse.
In June, 1972, the system was electrified, with a 1,500 watt bulb in a rotating lens, producing a flash every 20 seconds that can be seen at a range of 26 nautical miles (48 km). In 1973, additional dwellings for Supernumerary Assistant Lighthouse Keepers were built, as the Baily lighthouse became a training facility for Supernumerary Assistant Lighthouse Keepers who would then transfer to other lighthouses.
Modern technology made light a secondary warning system, and a radiobeacon became the primary method of warning ships. Starting in 1978, the light was operated only in poor visibility, along with the fog signal. The fog signal was finally discontinued in 1995.
In late 1996, the lighthouse was converted to automatic operation, and the last of the Keepers left on March 24, 1997, making Baily the last Irish lighthouse to go automatic.
Radiobeacon service was discontinued in 1999, and at the same time, radar and additional communications equipment was installed.
Although officially an automatic station, an attendant still lives in the Principal Keeper's residence.
Howth, Co Dublin
Howth (rhymes with both, ( /ˈhoʊθ/; from Old Norse: Hovuð meaning "head" — called in Irish: Binn Éadair), is a fishing and yachting port, and popular suburban resort on the north side of Howth Head, 15km (9½ miles north-east of the city centre.
Its attractions are easily appreciated, particularly at the coast. Howth Head gives fine views of Dublin Bay and the Wicklow Mountains or Boyne Valley beyond.
Howth with its surrounding rural district is now a busy suburb of Dublin, with a mix of dense residential development and wild hillside, all on the peninsula of Howth Head.
