Sandy Cove is a place of solemn beauty. Extending into the Bay of Fundy the little cove is subject to the huge tidal differences of the area and if you get there on any time other than low tide you will wonder where the beach got it's name from. During low tide though a large sandy beach extends into the water and almost invites you to jump into the chilly sea. Almost.
Sandy Cove is also the place where one of Nova Scotia's greatest mysteries started and whey you get to the beach for the first time you cannot help but wonder if that is the only unsolved puzzle connected to this place.
Depicted here is a fishery, built similarly to the ones Native Americans had erected here since centuries. The only modern gadget is the fisher boat: every few minutes the boat automagically fires off three shots that are supposed to scare away the cormorants that sit alongside the nets to get their share of the vast amounts of fish that are lost inside the trap. The birds however don't really care.
Sydney to LA, then LA to NYC. Felt like we were sitting in a massive room... My feet didn't reach the end of the seat when it was in bed mode. I... I... highly recommend travelling first class :)

In 1992, when I was shooting with my Olympus AZ300, I was aware I didn't have a very wide angle lens. But I remembered that NASA made mosaics of moons and planets by sticking together lots of smaller photographs. So for my visit to Meteor Crater in Arizona, that's what I tried. Only four exposures, because film was expensive, and I had only so many rolls with me to last me the holiday. Since then, every once in a while I took the prints out of my album and laid them on the table to make the panoramic view but never got around to doing it automagically in Photoshop, until now. And it jolly well works, doesn't it?
For the pixel peepers, I filled in a little bit of the sky top-right, and invented the greenish rocks on the bottom-left, because the original mosaic was only approximate.
While it's a decent artificial wide angle view, it doesn't quite capture the immensity of it. This sucker is three-quarters of a mile in diameter, 150 metres deep, and creates its own weather.

D2M11518 Runners in the Yeovil Montacute Parkrun 5k finishing the first edition. Montacute House behind her provides a striking backdrop. These pictures are automagically processed, reduced from the full resolution (and very large) files.
Some have been individually attended to and will generally have the more informative titles. This one is straight out of camera apart from being reduced, and the lighting etc are entirely natural.

L'inizio degli anni '60 è sicuramente l'epoca in cui sono stati prodotti i più grandi capolavori dell'industria fotografica giapponese. Il tentativo di battere lo strapotere tedesco portò a uno sforzo senza precedenti e il risultato fu una innovazione totale, sia nel campo dello stile che della tecnica. La Fujica 35 Compact era, come lascia sottintendere il logo, al suo tempo considerata una 35mm "compatta". Sebbene il corpo macchina fosse realizzato interamente in solido metallo, la forma assolutamente moderna e la possibilitá di scegliere 4 diversi rivestimenti colorati la faceva apparire come un'oggetto piccolo e chic per clienti che volevano distinguersi dalla massa. Essa peró seguiva il solco tracciato dalla Automagic del '60 , ove la cellula al selenio comandava l'esposimetro per l'esposizione automatica o manuale a prioritá di diaframmi. Esso sceglie tra possibili combinazioni da f/2,8 e 1/30sec fino a f/22 e 1/250sec a seconda della luce. La sensibilitá ASA é regolabile da 12 a 200. Nella parte sinistra del mirino sono indicate le combinazioni di apertura e tempi decisi dal'automatismo mentre sotto é indicata la distanza di messa a fuoco secondo i classici simboli "testa, gruppo, montagne", ed é dotata di un obiettivo Fujinon 2.8/38mm dalla reputazione eccellente. A partire dal 1970 la Compact 35 subisce un'ulteriore rivoluzione con l'introduzione della "Light": La plastica sostituisce il metallo nella costruzione del corpo macchina e solo un sottile guscio di alluminio lo ricopre riducendone cosí drasticamente il peso.

Il funzionamento della macchina può avvenire anche in modalità completamente manuale. In questo caso, si va a impostare l'apertura di diaframma piú opportuno e la macchina imposta automaticamente i tempi su 1/30.

Didn't realize I was doing "ledgers" way back at the University of Minnesota. As you can see we weren't that excited writing line-of-business apps. Also funny how Privacy Enhanced Mail never took off. Pity that.

This document describes an open-architecture forms routing and approval system suitable for routing requests through a multi-person authorization chain. Once a request has been authorized, the completed request can be automagically submitted to another system (for example, the financial system for posting to the general ledger). While WWW is initially envisioned as the vehicle for user interaction with the system, the request routing logic is separated from user presentation so that other technologies (such as E-mail with digital signatures) can be used as well. Provisions are also made for entities other than human signers to be part of the authorization chain, so consistency checks can be automatically applied to the form's content.

Amarok - An open source linux media player I just stumbled upon. It's made for the KDE desktop. I use Gnome, and I hadn't seen it before.
It is very nice: plays well, without the stream speed/buffering problems I was seeing with Rhythmbox; sends tunes to i-Pods wirelessly; grabs the album cover art off the web; finds lyrics; converts file types, populates audio file tag information automagically; integrates with wikipedia...

I spoke too soon! The fast-playing mp3s/oggs have returned... it "skips" about every five seconds, I assume because it runs out of the buffer. It's very annoying to listen to. I have found others mentioning this, but no solution.
Any idea how to fix this?

The challenge:
“Action Sequence Photography” is probably most popular with sports photography, but t is also used in wildlife photography with great success. Basically, you can use it with any subject that moves through the frame, especially when that subject has a different stance in each shot such as a pet or child playing in the yard or someone dancing.
My process:
My local photo club was invited to photograph the dress rehearsal of our local production Nutcracker ballet earlier this week. I went with the goal of shooting an action sequence. This turned out to be much more difficult than I had anticipated because there were almost always multiple layers of people on the stage, thus making it difficult to isolate a single subject.
I had my camera on a tripod for the most part, but I didn’t have it locked down because I wanted to be able to follow the dancers as they moved across the stage. This meant that most of my sequences had a different section of the background in every frame. This was easy enough to get around in Photoshop. I simply layered all of the photos into one document and then used the Auto Align feature which somehow automagically lined up all of the photos even though the dancers were in different positions in every frame.
For this particular sequence, I had eight more photos that I could have used, but there were so many arms and legs everywhere that nothing made sense. So I decided to keep the action sequence to just three photos.
The one thing that I did use some of the other eight photos for was to create a background panorama without the primary dancer in the scene. This helped to simplify the dancers on the sides so that they were not affected by the action sequence.
The hardest part of combining the photos for the action sequence was deciding what went in front and what went behind. I decided to get creative and make it look like the legs and arms were somewhat intertwined. (I even added some shadows to help with the illusion.)
All in all, it was a very nice night of shooting photos, though I have to admit that sometimes I just had to sit back and enjoy the show.
Lessons learned:
I need to hold my shutter button down longer when I am shooting a sequence in burst mode. Looking at my photos after the photo shoot, I realize that I tend to stop shooting a burst of photos long before I need to and often before the complete end of the action. As a result, I ended up with a lot of unusable sequences because there wasn’t a final frame in the series that looked like the action was complete.

The more time I spent with my image editing software the more time I spend going back through older images to see what I can make of them.
This image was shot on November 20, 2009 with my Rebel XS set on fully automagic because at the time I didn't know anything about the manual settings so the originals look pretty bland - the final output after a bit of processing looks much more interesting.
Raven was painted by a friend of mine to test different paint mixes in an outdoor environment.
It was done years (and years) ago and hung on the north side of another friends house and the artist (who lives in Great Barrington, Mass) asked me to take photos of them so he could see how they were standing up to the elements.

I've only had at most 2 years total of living with an automagic dishwasher. Every place I've lived, since I started washing dishes some several decades ago, it's been DIY handwashing dishes.
I'm the best dishwasher in the house.
This is one of those 365 images that I consider a "safe shot", things I noticed previously that I can grab a quick shot of if I haven't done anything else.

You'll see a Haringey dob-'em-in sign on one of the bollards in Vincent Road. So I'm guessing this location is an ongoing problem.
I may be wrong, but going on my own experience in Tottenham, this doesn't look like commercial fly-tipping. Possibly it's more a culture of street dumping among a small minority of residents.
Many years ago I described this as: "The Third System". In other words, the habit among some residents (and traders) of using "informal" street dumping as an alternative to retaining waste for "official" collection from homes and businesses. Or taking it to a "bring" site like the Reuse & Recycling Centres.
Sometimes this means people simply toss stuff in the street. Sometimes they may "tidily" tuck it in a "container" somewhere. (Perhaps behind a phone cabinet or in a hole in a fence.) Favourite "hotspots" may be alleys; or along blank walls where fewer people are around. Stuff is often left next to litter bins - maybe with the assumption that someone from Haringey Council or Veolia will soon automagically clear it up.
When I was a Haringey councillor I always tried to suggest solutions as well as draw attention to problems. Many years ago I suggested an approach which I called "Table Talk". Briefly, the idea was for a small group made up of staff and councillors to set up a temporary informing/listening table in the street at one of the dumping "hotspots". (Perhaps some local resident association members might join in, as well.)
As far as I know, Haringey did not take up the suggestion even as a limited experiment. Though maybe I'm out-of-date and it has since been tried? (I've seen street tables used for other services. E.g. Bubic had a table in High Road N17. As you know, temporary tables are used by the political parties.)
