The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of the Australian State of Queensland. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the King, represented by the governor, and the Legislative Assembly. It has been the only unicameral state legislature in the country since the upper chamber, the Legislative Council, was abolished in 1922. The Legislative Assembly sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Brisbane.

The Queensland Parliament retains plenary legislative power over Queensland, however Commonwealth laws apply to the extent of any inconsistency. Some laws from the colonial era passed by the New South Wales parliament and the Imperial Parliament also remain in force.

Following the outcome of the 2015 election, four additional seats were added to the Legislative Assembly, the voting system changed from optional preferential voting to full-preferential voting, and unfixed three-year terms were replaced with fixed four-year terms.

The Parliament was founded 22 May 1860, less than a year after the Colony of Queensland was created in June 1859. It was convened at military and convict barracks converted for the purpose located on Queen Street, Brisbane. Immigration was an important issue for the early Parliament. Population growth was encouraged with new settlers enticed by land ownership.

In 1915, Queensland became the first state to make voting compulsory at state elections.

Since 1 April 2003, live audio broadcasts have streamed through the internet from the Parliament while it is in session. In June 2007, the Parliament started broadcasting video of parliamentary proceedings. Nine in-house television cameras are used to record sessions.

The first female Speaker, Fiona Simpson was elected on 15 May 2012.

These birds get such a bad rap for their habits of raiding the bins of messy humans.

When I grew up on the irrigation flats, they were a constant visitor and in their natural habit of feeding among the muddy edges.

I always am pleased to find them around the waterways.

Rainbow Lorikeets are very social, playful and noisy. In Australia, wild lorikeets are often heard when they congregate in large roosting flocks.

Australia is in the midst of a horrific bushfire season. Very high temperatures and strong winds virtually across most of Australia are causing serious fires in many states.

From the Great Christmas Day Carpark Caper

Among the morning's entertainment were several games of Chase Me.

Not a lot of trees to practice with, so they raced under and through the covered carpark areas. Fortunately as it was Christmas Day, the carpark was empty.

The long-leaf waxflower Philotheca myoporoides is an Australian native plant, growing naturally in Queensland, here in New South Wales and Victoria.

Seen near a creek in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.

It is a hardy, large shrub with a long flowering season of tiny white to pale pink flowers. Leaves are sessile, oblong to egg-shaped and glandular-warty. The foliage emits a lovely citrus-like aroma.

Each flower no bigger than 10 mm. Seen here are two flowers with some unopened buds.

A super moon seen from south Perth Western Australia

With a light aircraft on approach to Jandakot airport.

A small falcon found throughout mainland Australia and offshore islands. Their range is restricted in Tasmania. I have found that they are usually approachable, as long as you move slowly and quietly. I try to approach birds from their front, believing that they will feel less threatened if they can see my every move. Rather than making a direct approach to a bird, which would likely be perceived as a threat, a more successful tactic is to gradually and indirectly approach the subject. I also meander and look around, stooping down to examine rocks, grass, or other objects to give the impression that I am engaged in some activity other than being focussed on the bird. Some birds will understandably feel threatened if you gaze at them directly, so avoiding direct eye contact can also be helpful. Birds of prey are curious creatures and will often watch your meandering activities with interest.
