Ross Bridge is an historic deck arch bridge in the town of Ross in central Tasmania, Australia It was commenced in 1830 and completed in July 1836. It crosses the Macquarie River.
The sandstone bridge was constructed by convict labour, and is the third oldest bridge still in use in Australia. Commissioned by Lieutenant-Governor Arthur, the bridge was designed by architect John Lee Archer, with the convict work team including two stonemasons, James Colbeck and Daniel Herbert, the latter being credited with the intricate carvings along both sides of the bridge. The bridge was registered on the Register of the National Estate in 1978.

An Australian White Ibis - sometimes called the sacred ibis - coming in to land on the lake in Brisbane botanic gardens. The pink areas under the wings are naked skin and a feature of the species - not a disease symptom as I first thought. These birds have developed into efficient urban scavengers in many Australian cities, but also form large flocks in rural wetlands.

The Australian Magpie (Cracticus tibicen) is not really a magpie at all, in that it's not a corvid. Instead, Australian Magpies come from a family of birds called Artamidae, which includes 20 or so species of vaguely crow-like birds native to Australasia and nearby areas. The family is split between the subfamily Artaminae, the woodswallows, and the subfamily Cracticinae which includes the Australian Magpie, two species of Peltops, the Currawongs and the fascinating Butcherbirds which are accomplished singers. Hopelessly confused by name with the Clamorous Reed-warbler, I have no idea what the Australian bird should really be called. FBW has the same bird under both names and all my guides differ. It seems it was originally the Australian, then considered a race of the Clamorous, now back to Australian?
