Australian Hobby

≠==================≠

Making the most of the early morning sunshine.

The finale of fireworks put on today by my local council for Australia Day that celebrates the founding of a British colony in Australia in 1788. Not a day to celebrate for everyone. It is called Invasion Day by Australian Aboriginal people because it began the invasion of their lands and their dispossession from them.

Thanks to everyone who has visited.

I appreciate very much the kind comments and faves which have been left.

Australian Hobby

≠=================≠

Don't worry I'm not the target.

That is in the tree over my shoulder. Those tight folded wings are a bird at full speed.

It circled the tree line, climbed and then stooped straight into the tree line.

Hard to say what it took, as it went straight out of the tree on the far side.

Golden Wattle blooms taken at

Westgate Park last winter. Each bloom is about 1 cm in diameter.

Australia's national floral emblem is the golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha Benth).

When in flower, the golden wattle displays the national colours, green and gold.

As one species of a large genus of flora growing across Australia, the golden wattle is a symbol of unity.

Wattle is ideally suited to withstand Australia's droughts, winds and bushfires.

The resilience of wattle represents the spirit of the Australian people.

In recent times, the golden wattle has been used as a symbol of remembrance and reflection.

On national days of mourning, for example, Australians are invited to wear a sprig of wattle.

The golden wattle has been used in the design of Australian stamps and many awards in the Australian honours system.

A single wattle flower is the emblem of the Order of Australia.

Many thanks for your visit, comments, invites and faves...it is always appreciated..

Peaceful Tuesday

When viewed in poor light, the Glossy Ibis appears anything but glossy. Its dark-brown plumage may appear blackish when seen from a distance, and the overall impression is one of a brad bird. However, in some lights, the plumage of the Glossy Ibis takes on an iridescent green-and-purple gloss (hence its name). Unlike other species of ibis in Australia, the Glossy Ibis is unlikely to be seen foraging in rubbish tips or on farmland, instead preferring to probe the mud of shallow terrestrial wetlands in pursuit of aquatic invertebrates.

Australian Magpie

≠==================≠

Even though it had a big beakful it would stop, put down the collected insects, grab a new one, and then pick up the others and move on.

Try as I might, I couldn't work out exactly where the nest was located.

Australian Magpie

≠=================≠

It's time for young Magpies to leave the family territory.

It's not unusual for young Maggies to stay together as they have no home territory and are yet to find a mate.

The adults are relentless in driving them away. This was one of about 8 that had ventured into a territory tree and the adults arrived so fast and with such force that this young one took off taking a strip of bark with it.

This young Maggie seems to always be working on the grass verge at the park carpark.

It jumped up in the air, and is just about to land on its breakfast snack.

Australian Hobby

≠===================≠

Seems like only a week or so since they fledged, and already they are 'securing the parking area' of unwanted ravens, doves and wattlebirds.

Mostly I suspect so they can gain experience of high speed manoeuvring

In between their rounds there is also time to practice the finer points of in-air capture.

I've not idea what caught their attention, but it was well scrutinised and no doubt tucked away in the visual databank.

The Australian water dragon (Intellagama lesueurii), which includes the eastern water dragon (Intellagama lesueurii lesueurii) and the Gippsland water dragon (Intellagama lesueurii howittii) subspecies, is a semi aquatic agamid species native to eastern Australia from Victoria northwards to Queensland. There may be a small introduced population on the south-east coast of South Australia. The Gippsland water dragon is generally the more southern of the two subspecies and the more cold adapted and heat sensitive. Visually distinguishing the Gippsland water dragon from the Eastern water dragon is relatively easy, as long as their skin is reasonably clean and not stained from the water, as identification of the two subspecies depends largely on observable differences in colours and patterns.

Australian Spotted Crake, Porzana fluminea

≠=====================≠

I don't regularly see these birds and mostly it's in the mud among the reeds.

I was quite suprised how readily it slipped into the water and paddled across the pond to the next feeding spot

Rainbow Lorikeets are very social, playful and noisy. In Australia, wild lorikeets are often heard when they congregate in large roosting flocks.

Best View On Black

After filling ourselves with pizzas, Dave (Just1Thing) and I headed for the hills to see if we could get a few photos before darkness fell. So the two idiots braved the freezing wind.
