On December 6, 1989, the MedellĂn cartel attempted to assassinate the then director of the Administrative Department of Security, Miguel Maza Márquez, who had become one of the main authorities involved in combating the drug lord Pablo Escobar.
Five hundred kilos of ammonia dynamite, detonated nine floors below, was just a shudder that pushed General Maza Márquez's chair, and caused the floor to be covered with shards of ceiling and security glass. Outside the armored office, however, the scene was different: it was 7:37 a.m. and at the intersection of Carrera 28 and Calle 18A in Bogotá, in the Paloquemao sector, the most powerful bomb attack in the history of Colombia had just taken place. 600 wounded, 63 dead, of many of the deceased only remains were left, scattered even on the roofs.
Outside, the files of the courts, whose headquarters were next to the DAS, fell like a paper rain on the street, where 34 cars passing by were reduced to flaming skeletons and a crater 4 meters deep and 13 meters in diameter closed the scene of a war field.
The explosion affected premises in at least 10 blocks around and blew up hundreds of decadactyl cards that were in the building, a paper rain that only announced more dead.

On a recent chilly late December morning, I was visiting the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge on the California/Oregon border. I spotted a Northern Harrier cruising along one of the canals parallel to the auto route. Suddenly, she dove straight into the canal and there was a ruckus of splashing and flapping.
She had a American Coot in her talons, and was holding its head underwater to drown it.
After a minute, the coot’s wings stopped beating the water and went limp. The harrier held her victim under for another minute or two for good measure.
Then, inexplicably, the harrier released her prey and flew off.
The coot’s head popped up and it paddled away at a leisurely pace as if nothing had happened, seemingly not too much worse for the wear. If only I had that kind of power to forgive and forget.

After this shot he took off like a mad cat.
There were three red-tail hawks in the hood today. That's one too many. Two of them were attacking the third one tag-team style...taking turns, one for a while, then the other. Look at the following shots in the photostream to see more of the battle, and some of the serious damage inflicted on the lower one in this shot. A third of one of his wings is missing!
It was really exciting to see, although I wish they were closer! I had four different sessions over a period of 5 hours. These guys are dedicated! Although they were not that close to me, I managed some decent shots. Got a lot more, and I'll try to get a few more posted soon. Be sure to see the rest previous to this one in the photostream.
