"Atomic-Field"

(Nagasaki) "Atomic-Field" was the ironic name given [to] the U.S. Marine airstrip in Nagasaki. At the time no one knew how much radiation was in the area, nor what kind of hidden death lurked there. Hundreds of apparently healthy Japanese people died mysteriously months after the bombing, and strange ailments afflict survivors today, both Japanese and Americans veterans who served in and around Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In September 1945, Joe O'Donnell, a 23-year-old Marine Corps photographer, was given orders to document the aftermath of U.S. Bombing raids of Japanese Cities. This included Sasebo, one of the more than sixty Japanese cities that were firebombed, and Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two cities destroyed by atomic blasts.

These are some of the photos that he took during his time in Japan. They were published in Japan 1945: A U.S. Marine's Photographs from Ground Zero by Joe O'Donnell. These photographs are on loan from his widow, Kimiko Sakai.

"Hiroshima Peace Memorial, commonly called the Atomic Bomb Dome or A-Bomb Dome (原爆ドーム, Genbaku Dōmu?), in Hiroshima, Japan, is part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The building serves as a memorial to the people who were killed in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. [...] at 8:15 on August 6, 1945 the first nuclear bomb to be used in war detonated almost directly above the dome (the actual center of the blast was 490 feet (150 m) away and 1,968 feet (600 m) above ground). " (cited from wikipedia)

After visiting the Hiroshima peace memorial park during the afternoon, I when back there by night and took this shot of the dome. It really an intense place I wish I could take more pictures but a few minutes later it started to rain so I ran to the hotel and get completely wet...

From the A-bomb museum in Hiroshima. This is a piece of a wall that was stained black from the rain that passed through atomic fallout.

Yeah, there was Anthony Bourdain on his TV show, making out like this joint was the "real" Las Vegas. Whatever, buddy.
