At the Desert Research Institute's oddball collection of '50s and '60s Americana - sometimes poignant, sometimes insanely absurd.

The band was born in Bologna in 2012 as an idea of Daniele Lambertini, Simone Sangiorgi and Mattia Emiliani, that with other musicians, Francesco Vogli and Alessio Sandri, will form Atomic Blast. Shortly after Alessio leaves the band for personal reasons, and is replaced by Tobia Caradonna. In September 2012 the band finally finds a stable and tight line-up: Francesco on vocals, Daniele and Simone on guitars, Mattia on bass and Tobia on drums. The band starts writing their own material and performing at various concerts, until they feel the necessity to record their first EP, "Noise of Revolution" in January 2013, under Spider Rock Promotion. Tobia's groove and technical approach to drumming completes and defines the style of Atomic Blast: Thrash/Groove with very personal Funky influences. Currently the band is writing new song for the LP.

THE ATOMIC BOMB

Truman's decision to drop atomic bombs on two Japanese cities brought an end to the war in the Pacific and ushered in a new era of warfare-the atomic age.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, and up until the American landing at Leyte, some Japanese leaders hoped to prevent the U.S. from opposing Japan's expansion in the Pacific. By March 1945, Japan's inability to stop the relentless U.S. advance convinced the Emperor and some of his advisors to seek negotiations. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the debate and the Emperor's will finally prevailed. Japan surrendered unconditionally on 15 August 1945.

Edited Hubble Space Telescope image of the galaxy NGC 7252, which is the result of a collision with another galaxy a long time ago (and yes, far away, too). Processing variant to bring out details.

Original caption Only rarely does an astronomical object have a political association. However, the spiral galaxy NGC 7252 acquired exactly that when it was given an unusual nickname. In December 1953, the US President Dwight D. Eisenhower gave a speech advocating the use of nuclear power for peaceful purposes. This “Atoms for Peace” speech was significant for the scientific community, as it brought nuclear research into the public domain, and NGC 7252, which has a superficial resemblance to an atomic nucleus surrounded by the loops of electronic orbits, was dubbed the Atoms for Peace galaxy in honour of this. These loops are well visible in a wider field of view image. This nickname is quite ironic, as the galaxy’s past was anything but peaceful. Its peculiar appearance is the result of a collision between two galaxies that took place about a billion years ago, which ripped both galaxies apart. The loop-like outer structures, likely made up of dust and stars flung outwards by the crash, but recalling orbiting electrons in an atom, are partly responsible for the galaxy’s nickname. This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows the inner parts of the galaxy, revealing a pinwheel-shaped disc that is rotating in a direction opposite to the rest of the galaxy. This disc resembles a spiral galaxy like our own galaxy, the Milky Way, but is only about 10 000 light-years across — about a tenth of the size of the Milky Way. It is believed that this whirling structure is a remnant of the galactic collision. It will most likely have vanished in a few billion years’ time, when NGC 7252 will have completed its merging process.

On my last visit to the Boston area I made the drive up to Marblehead to check out Atomic Cafe. I read a few good reviews in the CoffeeGeek forums, plus noticed that Simon's had featured their coffee as a guest espresso. Well worth the drive! Beautiful job on the build out, and a sweet FB70. Sorry for the bad picture, wish I had taken a few more.
