The stone facade from the Hiroshima atomic bombing, donated to Reykjavik in 1991 as a remembrance of peace.
Went down to Sywell today for the Atomic Event. Seen it advertised for months and really wanted to go. Camera batteries charged, a small pack-up was put together, car was filled with fuel and so off we went. Got parked ok with no problem, wandered over and saw loads of people dressed in 40s outfits which is what I like. In fact their were some great outfits. We had a brew in the courtyard and decided to make entry into the event, however the cost was £42 each, yeah thats right EACH. There was NO way I was going to pay £42 to get in. Must admit it all looks good, loads or cars and people dressed for the occasion BUT £42.

Sadako Sasaki (佐々木 禎子), January 7, 1943 – October 25, 1955) was a Japanese girl who lived near Misasa Bridge in Hiroshima, Japan when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Sadako was only two years old on August 6, 1945 when she became a victim of the atomic bomb.
At the time of the explosion Sadako was at home, about 1 mile from ground zero. By November 1954, chicken pox had developed on her neck and behind her ears. Then in January 1955, purple spots had started to form on her legs. Subsequently, she was diagnosed with leukemia, which her mother referred to as "an atom bomb disease." She was hospitalized on February 21, 1955 and given, at the most, a year to live.
On August 3, 1955, Chizuko Hamamoto — Sadako's best friend — came to the hospital to visit and cut a golden piece of paper into a square and folded it into a paper crane. At first Sadako didn't understand why Chizuko was doing this but then Chizuko retold the story about the paper cranes. Inspired by the crane, she started folding them herself, spurred on by the Japanese saying that one who folded 1,000 cranes was granted a wish. A popular version of the story is that she fell short of her goal of folding 1,000 cranes, having folded only 644 before her death, and that her friends completed the 1,000 and buried them all with her. This comes from the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. An exhibit which appeared in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum stated that by the end of August, 1955, Sadako had achieved her goal and continued to fold more cranes.
With her family around her, Sadako died on the morning of October 25, 1955.
I like candy letters on my cakes, and after writing "HIPPO BIRTHDAY" there were lots of other letters left in the pack. So I figured my coworkers at NIST would appreciate a periodic table of atomic cupcakes.

Owned by Porto Bay Hotels and seen parked outside one of their hotels at lido to the west of Funchal Madeira. 23/12/14
Located in the Heart of the Kansas Flint Hills, next to I-70 and Exit 301, is the M65 Atomic Cannon
The "Atomic Cannon", the Army's largest artillery gun, was capable of firing both conventional and atomic warheads. This 47 ton gun (aka "Atomic Annie") was transported by two tractors. The drivers of the vehicles communicated with each other by means of a built-in telephone system. It proved to be a highly mobile weapons system and adaptable to most road conditions. It fired a 550 pound projectile and had an approximate range of 20 miles. Six years after the development of strategic atomic weapons, this road-transportable cannon gave a tactical atomic capability to US land forces.
Twenty were manufactured; eight appear to have survived the Cold War and are on public display today.
You can find cannons at:
Freedom Park, Junction City, Kansas
Army Ordnance Museum, Aberdeen, Maryland (still has the two large "prime movers" attached)
Atomic Museum, Albuquerque, New Mexico
Fort Sill Museum, Oklahoma
Rock Island Arsenal, Memorial Field, Rock Island, Illinois
Virginia War Memorial Museum, Newport News, Virginia
Watervliet Arsenal, Watervliet, NY -- where they were all manufactured.
