Three-dimensional atomic-resolution tomographic imaging requires analyzing a microscopic sample viewed from several directions, followed by a computerized reconstruction of the sample’s 3-D atomic structure. Such an exacting process has eluded researchers for decades, but is now possible with the Transmission Electron Aberration-corrected Microscope (TEAM) Stage. It holds and positions samples inside electron microscopes with unprecedented stability, position-control accuracy, and range of motion.
The technology was developed by Thomas Duden, Nord Andresen, Rich Weidenbach, and Andreas Schmid of Berkeley Lab’s Engineering and Materials Sciences Divisions. Scientists from Attocube Systems, FEI Company, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign also contributed.
The TEAM Stage will make one of the world’s most powerful electron microscopes even better, and enable previously impossible experiments. Trial-and-error detection of defects in a thin-film nanocrystal solar cell material may be minimized; and the fabrication of new biomaterials for longer-lasting artificial bone implants may be facilitated.

The Atomic Punk is a Bubble Top Show Rod built by Aaron Grote of Cerro Gordo, Illinois. Even though it looks like an Ed Roth fiberglass construction, the car is all made in steel by Aaron and his beloved english wheel. The fins and the trunk come from a 1959 Plymouth Savoy. The rollpan is built using the hood of an early 60s Chevrolet 2 ton truck. Taillights from a 1953 Ford are used in the rollpan.
Power comes from a 392 Hemi engine hooked to a Turbo 400 transmission. The front end is made up of a chromed, drilled and dropped I beam axle from Pete and Jakes with Wilwood disc brakes hidden inside a couple of O'Brien Truckers drums and backing plates. Almost every nut and bolt on the car is either chromed or polished stainless
Looking at a time piece is an attraction that can't be replicated by grabbing your mobile phone.. I've had this for almost year - it keeps perfect time. It's solar powered and atomic controlled - meaning that the time is controlled by radio signal from Denver, CO (in my case). It never needs setting - ever! I came home from the shop and took him out of the package right away and saw the eye lighted up. Can’t even forget the first smell of fresh paint on the figure well after decades……. I am grateful.
