Atom Heart Mother è il quinto album discografico del gruppo rock inglese Pink Floyd. È considerato un classico degli anni settanta. È uno dei primi album pubblicati da una major (EMI) a non recare il nome del gruppo in copertina. Massiccio fu il lavoro in fase di mixaggio, opera di Peter Bown e Alan Parsons (allora giovane ma promettente assistente), e fondamentale l'apporto di Ron Geesin per l'arrangiamento orchestrale della title track.
La Copertina
Ispirata dalla carta da parati con le mucche di Andy Warhol, realizzava un'idea del gruppo che aveva chiesto qualcosa di ordinario ed estremamente semplice, il più lontano possibile dalle immagini dello space rock degli esordi. Famosi per essere un gruppo di rock psichedelico, un'etichetta di cui volevano sbarazzarsi, i Pink Floyd affidarono al grafico Storm Thorgerson della Hipgnosis il compito di confezionare la copertina di Atom Heart Mother. Thorgerson si recò nella campagna a nord di Londra, immortalando alcuni splendidi esemplari bovini: la mucca vincitrice (con tanto di pedigree) era una frisona di nome Lulubelle III appartenente al signor Arthur Chalke (che in seguito proverà invano a chiedere un compenso).
Il grafico aveva sottoposto al gruppo altre due idee: un tuffatore su un trampolino e una donna davanti ad una scalinata. I Pink Floyd scelsero la mucca. La scelta risultò essere anche la più economica: costò poco più di 30 sterline. Quando Storm Thorgerson mostrò la copertina a un funzionario della EMI, ricevette questa risposta: "Ma sei matto? Vuoi rovinare questa casa discografica?'".
La copertina dell'album non riporta né il titolo né il nome del gruppo, è apribile e mostra sul davanti la celebre Lulubelle III e sul retro tre mucche ravvicinate che sovrastano lo spazio sulla destra dell'art-work. L'interno è bucolico: un'immagine in bianco e nero sgranato di una brughiera inglese con animali al pascolo.
Non esiste alcun collegamento tra la mucca e i brani presenti sul disco anche se recentemente lo stesso Nick Mason ha accennato ad una simbologia classica che vede la mucca come rappresentazione della Madre Terra e quindi un riferimento indiretto alla "madre dal cuore atomico", con l'assonanza fra le parole "Heart" ("Cuore") e "Earth" ("Terra").
La copertina dell'album è stata omaggiata da vari artisti e registi. Essa appare nel film Tragedia di un uomo ridicolo di Bernardo Bertolucci ed è stata citata nella copertina di un singolo di Sergio Endrigo (Se le cose stanno così/Viva Maddalena, 1963) più in quella di un album dei KLF (Chill Out, 1990).

Les caméras avaient vieilli dans l'arbre, et leur rouille s'était propagée dans les branches, jusqu'aux ailes des oiseaux.

Set in the landscape of Pendle, the Atom was designed by Peter Meacock, Andrew Edmunds and Katarina Novomestska of Peter Meacock Projects. It was launched by Mayor of Pendle, Councillor George Adams with Anthony Wilson and designer Peter Meacock on 22 September 2006. The bronze-coated glass fiber reinforced concrete structure provides both a work of art and a viewing point and shelter from which to enjoy the surrounding landscape.
Völklingen is part of the greater Saarbrücken area. The city of Saarbrücken itself is just out of the frame, upper right in this picture.

In Book 3 the "Floating Prefect" of Tokyo undergoes a catastrophe, as witnessed on televisions in Mexico City.
This sets up for Man-machine going to Tokyo in Book 4. I wondered about changing this story line given recent events. . . but think I will keep it in.

'Panopticons' is an arts and regeneration project of the East Lancashire Environmental Arts Network managed by Mid Pennine Arts. Four large-scale sculptures were commissioned, designed and constructed over a six-year period for the districts of Blackburn, Burnley.
Set in the landscape of Pendle, the Atom is one of the four panopticons (structures providing a comprehensive view), across East Lancashire, England, as symbols of the renaissance of the area.
