The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51), 04/21/2021

The Whirlpool Galaxy is slowly merging with the smaller, yellowish galaxy NGC 5195. This interaction is trigging massive areas of new star formation, which is why there is so many red clusters in the Whirlpool Galaxy.

M 106 (conosciuta anche come NGC 4258) è una galassia a spirale visibile nella costellazione dei Cani da Caccia; sembra che il suo interno ospiti un buco nero supermassiccio.

La distanza della galassia è stimata sui 21-25 milioni di anni luce e la sua massa totale è pari a circa 190 miliardi di masse solari; si allontana da noi alla velocità di 537 km/s.

Queste fantastiche strutture cosmiche ipotizzano forme familiari. Sulla sinistra dell'immagine, le emissioni luminose attraversate da bande scure di polvere densa sembrano tracciare la forma di un continente, tanto che alla nube catalogata come NGC 7000 è stato dato il nome popolare di North America Nebula. Sulla destra, appena oltre la “costa orientale” del Nord America, è ben visibile la nube denominata IC 5070, il cui profilo ha suggerito il nome di Nebulosa Pellicano.

Le due formazioni nebulari sono a più di 1500 anni luce di distanza dalla Terra.
