A nova in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) our nearest neighboring large spiral galaxy, dubbed AT2025abao. This object is classified as a luminous red nova (LRN), much fainter than a supernova, but brighter than a classical nova, thought to be caused by the merger of two stars. This image was made on November 21, 2025 from southwestern New Mexico. Compare the inset to an image taken in 2021 where the nova does not appear. Not an impressive image perhaps, but fun to catch a faint transient event that took 2½ million years for the light to reach us.

Orion Nebula (M42), 03/04/2021
My yearly attempt at the Orion Nebula. Honestly, I was just messing about with my telescope and grabbed 40 minutes of data before Orion dropped behind my roof. Not much data to work with but it may be the best M42 I’ve done to date. I think it’s mainly because my post processing is getting better. Still so much to learn but it keeps the hobby fun.

I totally forgot I did this one. This is an emission nebula in the constellation of Cygnus. It is about 15 light-years across and roughly 4,000 light-years away. You can also see a dark nebula, Barnard 168, as well. This is actually clouds of dust that are blocking the light from the background stars and giving the impression of empty regions in space.

IC 63, also known as "The Ghost of Cassiopeia", is an area of molecular hydrogen clouds and dust located 550 light-years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia.
This region is both an emission nebula and a reflection nebula. The gas and dust in this region are bombarded with radiation from the bright star Navi (which is just out of shot to the top of this picture).
Navi is a Blue-White Giant star; the middle star in the "W" shape made by the constellation. It has a radius that is 14 times larger than our own Sun, while also being 55,000 times more luminous and 19 times more massive. Added to this is the fact that it is only 3 or so light-years away from the nebula. and bathes it in ultraviolet light. This causes the hydrogen gas to glow in the red part of the spectrum. Areas of blue can also be seen, which is due to light reflected from the gas dust in the nebula.
This picture was gathered by the C11 telescope over the course of about 3 hours.

Eagle Nebula (M16), 07/26/2020
Man have the skies been clear a lot lately! Prepare for a bunch of images once I get a chance to process them all. First time that has been an issue for me in the PNW.
This is the Eagle Nebula, an object I have shot before on different equipment. The Eagle Nebula is a 5.5 million-year-old cloud of molecular hydrogen gas and dust stretching approximately 70 light years by 55 light years. It lies about 6,500 light-years away. The “Eagle” itself in the center is the famous Hubble image, “The Pillars of Creation”. Its good to have goals. LOL

Messier 1 is better known as the Crab Nebula. Charles Messier originally mistook Messier 1 for Halley’s Comet, which inspired him to create his famous catalogue of celestial objects that might be mistaken for comets.
The Crab Nebula is an expanding remnant of a star's supernova explosion. Japanese and Chinese astronomers recorded this violent event nearly 1,000 years ago in 1054 AD, as likely did the Native Americans. The glowing relic has been expanding since the star exploded, and it is now approximately 11 light-years in width.
The orange filaments are the tattered remains of the star and consist mostly of hydrogen. The blue in the filaments in the outer part of the nebula represents neutral oxygen. These elements were expelled during the supernova explosion.
A rapidly spinning neutron star (the ultra-dense core of the exploded star) is embedded in the centre of the Crab Nebula. Electrons whirling at nearly the speed of light around the star’s magnetic field lines produce the eerie blue light in the interior of the nebula. The neutron star, like a lighthouse, ejects twin beams of radiation that make it appear to pulse 30 times per second as it rotates.

Stephan's Quintet is a visual grouping of five galaxies of which four form the first compact galaxy group ever discovered. The group is visible in the constellation Pegasus.
Four of these galaxies are about about 300 million light years away. Because of the two dimensional nature of this image, the fifth member (to the left of the middle pair) appears to be with the others; but in fact it is “only” 40 million light years away, so it is not part of the more distant group.
You may recognise these galaxies from the opening scenes of the classic 1946 film, “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Helix Nebula (IC 7293), 09/03/2021
Headed up to my buddy’s property in Orofino Idaho last weekend for some light boozing and shenanigans with a bunch of friends. I took the telescope as well on the off chance there were clear skies, and I wasn’t too far gone to use it. On the first night I was able to capture this before skies and my brain got too hazy to do any more.
This is the Helix Nebula. For obvious reasons it is very often called the “Eye of God” nebula. It is found in the constellation Aquarius and is probably the nearest planetary nebula to our Solar System, located roughly 650 light years away. Based on its size, age and distance it is expanding in size at 19 miles per second. My back of the envelope math estimates that is as fast as traveling to the moon in under 3.5 minutes.

North America Nebula (NGC 7000) and the Cygnus Wall, 07/22/2021
Several weeks ago I set up the telescope in the driveway to work out some issues I was having. I pointed at an object in a region of the sky I could see between the trees for a few hours. I wasn’t thinking I was going to get an image worth sharing but after I processed it, I was pleasantly surprised.
This is part of the North America Nebula (NGC 7000). It is found near the star Deneb in the constellation Cygnus. It is one of the few nebulae that’s distance has been accurately measured. The Gaia astrometry satellite calculated 395 stars within the nebulosity to a precise distance of 2,590 light-years away.
The Cygnus Wall is the W-shaped area along the “East Coast” of the nebula and is a region of concentrated star formation. I think it looks like an eagle in flight from overhead.

The Veil Nebula Complex - (NGC 6960, NGC 6992, NGC 6974), 09/25/2021
I went to Ahsahka Idaho again last weekend but this time I just brought my small “travel” setup. This is just an astro-modified Canon DSLR, a 200mm lens and a star tracking mount. This system is definitely smaller, lighter and easier to travel with, but it is a bit more difficult to use and does not give the same results. But I enjoyed the challenge and had fun playing with it. I was able to spend one night capturing this region of the sky.
This is the Veil Nebula Complex. It is the remains of a Supernova that exploded between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago in the Cygnus Loop. This Complex covers an area of sky 36 times the area of the full moon.

About 7,000 years ago people on Earth would have seen a star in the Milky Way explode. I have reprocessed some data I collected a year ago: not the greatest image, but capturing the essence of these ionised wisps of hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur gas that are part of the remnants that were blasted off.

Fleming's Triangular Wisp in the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant (also known as Pickering'sTriangle), NGC 6974 & NGC 6979 are just to the left and the top of the Western Veil is bottom right.
The loop was discovered by William Herschell in 1784 and this part of it was first photographed by Williamina Fleming in 1904 but as she was working at Edward Pickering's observatory he got to name it... just because he was a man!! Hopefully times are now better for women in science.
