About 7,000 years ago people on Earth would have seen a star in the Milky Way explode. I have reprocessed some data I collected a year ago: not the greatest image, but capturing the essence of these ionised wisps of hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur gas that are part of the remnants that were blasted off. The Eastern Veil Nebula, in Cygnus.
About 6.56 hours of 20” exposures, imaged from Colchester, England, in June 2022 on a modified Nikon D750 DSLR, Sky-Watcher Explorer 150p, EQ5 Pro, via Stellarmate in Kstars/Ekos. Stacked in AstroPixelProcessor, cropped and adjusted in Photoshop and Lightroom.

Lying 25 million light years from Earth, Messier 101 is a spiral disk of stars, dust and gas about 170,000 light years across, which is nearly twice the diameter of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. The spiral arms contain large regions of star-forming nebulas. Imaged from the back garden in Colchester, my picture contains almost 600 x 20" exposures at ISO 1600, on a modified Nikon D750 DSLR, Sky-Watcher Explorer 150p, EQ5 Pro, via Stellarmate in Kstars/Ekos. Stacked in AstroPixelProcessor, cropped and adjusted in Photoshop and Lightroom.
Catalogued as IC 4703, NGC 6611 and Messier 16, the Eagle Nebula in the constellation Serpens and associated open star cluster that illuminates it are among the most striking features of the deep sky. The dark star-forming pillars within are dense areas of gas and dust. This was a tricky target from my Colchester back garden, being low in the northern sky between neighbouring shrubbery. I stacked the best 70% of about 3.3 hours of 10" images over two nights in late June (when it hardly gets dark), taken at Gain 300 on the ASI585MC through a ZWO UV/IR cut filter. Sky-Watcher Explorer 150P on EQ5 Pro, unguided. Processed in AstroPixelProcessor, Lightroom and Photoshop.

The Heart Nebula, also known as IC 1805, is located about 7,500 light-years away in the Cassiopeia constellation. This massive emission nebula resembles a human heart, emitting a powerful red light from its large quantity of hydrogen gas that causes the object to glow. In the Heart Nebula's center is the open star cluster Melotte 15, where many young stars erode several beautiful dust pillars with their powerful heat and winds. Its companion, the Fishhead Nebula, is located in the lower right corner of this photo.
I wanted to do something special for Valentine’s Day, so for the first time, I attempted to make a mosaic. It was a challenge stitching all six panels seamlessly together since some of the light frames were taken on different nights, but overall, I say I did a fantastic job with the final product. I hope you enjoy the results as much as I do!

Like I said in my last photo, its galaxy season, lol. A few weeks ago, I took my gear up into the woods and was able to capture lots of images while in the dark skis. I have always wanted to photography this galaxy, but it is really small and far away (31 million light-year), but I did it anyways. This picture is cropped in a lot. The Sombrero Galaxy is almost perfectly edge on to our field of view, so the dust lanes really pop. It also contains one of the biggest super-massive black holes ever discovered.

Leo Triplet (M65, M66, NGC3628), 03/17/2021
Galaxy season is here. In Spring most of the nebulas set too early to photograph so attention turns to distant and dim galaxies. For my current setup this is unfortunate because I have wrong field of view for tiny galaxies. But a YouTube channel I watch (Chuck’s Astrophotography) did this group using the same telescope I have so I gave it a go. Thanks Chuck! I did spend a lot of time on this so I would have enough detail to crop it in a bit. So, I give you the Leo Triplet, unsurprisingly found in the constellation Leo. These gravitationally bound galaxies are approximately 35 million lights years from you.

Last night there were a few hours of clear sky so I thought I would do a bit of star gazing. Sometimes I come across more stars than you could shake a stick at. Like this picture I got of M71, a globular clusters of stars in the constellation Sagitta (yes Sagittarius). It is in the direction of a particularly rich area of the Milky Way. As you can see that provides a backdrop of so many stars you hardly tell which ones are in the cluster and which are not. If you double click on this image to see it enlarged the whole picture is stellar.
The M71 cluster has about 20,000 stars, is about 13,000 light years away and is estimated to be 27 light years across. Or 90 light years across - apparently it depends on which stars can be deemed to be a part of the cluster and which are apart from it.

It was bitterly cold on the night of 2nd January 2025, but what a beautifully crystal clear starry night it was. So the year began with stargazing late into the night (or early morning).
To begin proceedings I spent over 4 hours capturing this image of IC 342, the Hidden Galaxy in the northern constellation of Camelopardilus.
It is a spiral galaxy the far side of the equator of the Milky Way’s pearly disk, which is crowded with thick cosmic gas, dark dust, and glowing stars that all obscure our view, earning it the nickname of the Hidden Galaxy. It is roughly 11 million light years away and about 50,000 light-years across (half the size of our own Milk Way galaxy).

Messier 12 (M12), also known as the Gumball Globular, is a globular star cluster located in the constellation Ophiuchus. The Gumball Globular lies at a distance of 15,700 light years from Earth and has a diameter of 75 light years. It has the designation NGC 6218 in the New General Catalogue.
The high concentration of stars within globular clusters provides such cramped living quarters that it makes them home to exotic binary star systems where two stars are locked in tight orbits around each other. Matter from one is gobbled up by its companion, releasing X-rays formed from very close encounters between stars in crowded regions. It looks pretty but don't stand too close for very long.
