Fleming's Triangular Wisp in the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant (also known as Pickering'sTriangle), NGC 6974 & NGC 6979 are just to the left and the top of the Western Veil is bottom right.

The loop was discovered by William Herschell in 1784 and this part of it was first photographed by Williamina Fleming in 1904 but as she was working at Edward Pickering's observatory he got to name it... just because he was a man!! Hopefully times are now better for women in science.

Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888), 08/04/2020

This is the Crescent Nebula, an emission nebula in the constellation of Cygnus. It is about 5000 light-years from earth, that is pretty close all things considered. Do you see that bright star in the middle of the nebula? That star is energizing the gas that was blown off into space when the star became a red giant. This left behind gas, absorbs the star light and then emits its own faint light that my camera is able to see.

The Heart Nebula, also known as IC 1805, is located about 7,500 light-years away in the Cassiopeia constellation. This massive emission nebula resembles a human heart, emitting a powerful red light from its large quantity of hydrogen gas that causes the object to glow. In the Heart Nebula's center is the open star cluster Melotte 15, where many young stars erode several beautiful dust pillars with their powerful heat and winds. Its companion, the Fishhead Nebula, is located in the lower right corner of this photo.

I wanted to do something special for Valentine’s Day, so for the first time, I attempted to make a mosaic. It was a challenge stitching all six panels seamlessly together since some of the light frames were taken on different nights, but overall, I say I did a fantastic job with the final product. I hope you enjoy the results as much as I do!

Leo Triplet (M65, M66, NGC3628), 03/17/2021

Galaxy season is here. In Spring most of the nebulas set too early to photograph so attention turns to distant and dim galaxies. For my current setup this is unfortunate because I have wrong field of view for tiny galaxies. But a YouTube channel I watch (Chuck’s Astrophotography) did this group using the same telescope I have so I gave it a go. Thanks Chuck! I did spend a lot of time on this so I would have enough detail to crop it in a bit. So, I give you the Leo Triplet, unsurprisingly found in the constellation Leo. These gravitationally bound galaxies are approximately 35 million lights years from you.

Last night there were a few hours of clear sky so I thought I would do a bit of star gazing. Sometimes I come across more stars than you could shake a stick at. Like this picture I got of M71, a globular clusters of stars in the constellation Sagitta (yes Sagittarius). It is in the direction of a particularly rich area of the Milky Way. As you can see that provides a backdrop of so many stars you hardly tell which ones are in the cluster and which are not. If you double click on this image to see it enlarged the whole picture is stellar.

The M71 cluster has about 20,000 stars, is about 13,000 light years away and is estimated to be 27 light years across. Or 90 light years across - apparently it depends on which stars can be deemed to be a part of the cluster and which are apart from it.

IC 63, also known as "The Ghost of Cassiopeia", is an area of molecular hydrogen clouds and dust located 550 light-years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia.

This region is both an emission nebula and a reflection nebula. The gas and dust in this region are bombarded with radiation from the bright star Navi (which is just out of shot to the top of this picture).

Navi is a Blue-White Giant star; the middle star in the "W" shape made by the constellation. It has a radius that is 14 times larger than our own Sun, while also being 55,000 times more luminous and 19 times more massive. Added to this is the fact that it is only 3 or so light-years away from the nebula. and bathes it in ultraviolet light. This causes the hydrogen gas to glow in the red part of the spectrum. Areas of blue can also be seen, which is due to light reflected from the gas dust in the nebula.

This picture was gathered by the C11 telescope over the course of about 3 hours.

Cieli Sereni 😎

Sometimes I find there are nothing like as many stars to see as other times.

Take this picture which includes M40, a pair of bright stars that Charles Messier thought was a double star. It is in Ursa Major (or the Plough, near to Megrez the star that connects the handle to the plough).

The stars form an optical pair, lying along the same line of sight, but not physically connected to each other as they are now known to be at different distances from Earth. One is about 470 light years away and the other is over 1000.

Messier was trying to identify nebulae but at that time it was hard to distinguish between galaxies and nebulae. This one of the few objects that made it into his catalogue that were neither.

What he missed were two spiral galaxies that my C11 picked up near to M40. The larger one just under the word Major is NGC 4290 and the much fainter one below that is PGC 39934.
