Western Veil Nebula (Caldwell 34), 06/25/2020

This object is part of a super nova remnant from a star that was 20 times more massive than the sun. When that star blew up some 10,000 to 20,000 years ago, it left behind ionized gas and dust that has expanded to cover an area of the sky roughly 6 times the diameter of the Moon. This picture is only one small part of that explosion.

This night was kind of a last-minute decision. I looked outside and saw clear skies so I quickly setup the gear. It was my first night using some new toys, a new light pollution filter and an Asiair Pro computer. The new equipment worked great but I did have a few issues. I had my gain set to 200 for some reason and the polar alignment was crap. But I think I salvaged the data and the image turned out pretty good.

I imaged the Lagoon nebula on August 1, 2019. At that time, I was using my Olympus camera. AstroPixelProcessor did not process Olympus RAW files, so I processed the image using Startools. APP has since been modified to process Olympus RAW files. On September 23, 2020, I reprocessed the 2019 data using APP, and here is the result.

The Cat’s Eye Nebula is a famous planetary nebula located in the northern constellation Draco. The nebula’s designation in the New General Catalogue is NGC 6543.

The Cat’s Eye is one of the most structurally complex nebulae known. It was formed around 1,000 years ago when a hot, bright central star expelled its outer envelope. It is sometimes also known as the Sunflower Nebula or the Snail Nebula. It lies at a distance of 3,300 light years from Earth.

There is an enormous but exceptionally faint halo of gaseous material surrounding the Cat’s Eye Nebula which is over three light-years across. Within the past years some planetary nebulae been found to have halos like this one, likely formed of material ejected during earlier active episodes in the star’s evolution – most likely some 50,000 to 90,000 years ago.

In my photo the Cat's Eye Nebula is the central, bright area. It is burnt out as I have probably overexposed the images but it means you can see the glow of the surrounding material.

The brightest of the knots in the nebula’s halo has its own entry in the IC catalogue: IC 4677.

Lower down in the image you can see NGC 6552 which is a barred spiral galaxy about 400 million light years from our solar system.

I wanted to image this nebula since I have seen this picture on astrobin www.astrobin.com/5l8pbx/

It looks absolute striking and way better than my own attempt. Guess mono and over double the exposure time doing their magic here.

If possible I will try to get a few more ours on this target, weather was an absolute catastrophe since early December for me, with only a few nights of clear skies.

The Flaming Star Nebula, also known as IC 405 or Caldwell 31, is a diffuse emission nebula located in the constellation Auriga. It is about 1,500 light-years away from Earth and covers an area of about five times the size of the full Moon in the night sky.The Flaming Star Nebula gets its name from the distinctive shape of the reddish-pink nebula, which resembles a fiery, flaming star. The nebula is primarily composed of hydrogen gas, which is ionized by the ultraviolet radiation from a nearby hot, young star called AE Aurigae. This process causes the gas to emit light, creating the glowing appearance of the nebula. In addition to the hydrogen gas, the Flaming Star Nebula also contains dust particles, which absorb and scatter light. This gives the nebula its intricate, filamentary structure and contributes to the overall reddish-pink color. The Flaming Star Nebula is a popular target for amateur astronomers and astrophotographers due to its striking appearance and relative brightness. It is best viewed from dark-sky locations using telescopes or large binoculars, and is particularly impressive when captured in long-exposure photographs.

Setup, SkyWatcher Azgti in modalità equatoriale, ottica Jupiter 200mm, Asi2600mc, filtro Optolong L-Extreme, teleguida Svbony 30/165 camera guida Asi 120mm

Light 36x600” più Dark, Flat e DarkFlat

Tot. Integrazione ore 6:00

This is a first test shot with my new RASA telescope. Although the conditions where rather bad, this image turned out pretty well.

Equipment used:

Celestron RASA 8"

ZWO ASI2600MC Pro

60x 120sec subframes + dark and bias frames

Processing in AstroPixelProcessor

Finishing in Photoshop

A perennial favourite.

M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy, is 31 million light years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici. It has a beautiful face-on appearance, as seen from Earth, enabling observers to make out its distinct spiral structure and luminous galactic core.

The spiral arms are packed with stars, gas and dust and make for the perfect conditions for new stars to be born, as that gas and dust coalesces, compresses and collapses to ignite star-birth.

In images of the Whirlpool Galaxy, hot young stars can be seen glowing bright blue along the arms, while older, yellower stars are seen glowing closer to the centre.

NGC 6543, also known as the Cat's Eye Nebula, is a planetary nebula located in the constellation Draco, approximately 3,300 light-years from Earth.

Its intricate shape and colourful appearance have earned it the nicknames the Cat’s Eye Nebula, the Snail Nebula, and the Sunflower Nebula.

It formed around 1,000 years ago, when an aging star reached the end of its life and expelled its outer layers of gas and dust into space. The ejected clouds of material now surround the hot, bright planetary nebula nucleus, which illuminates them. Those outer clouds are quite faint. I needed 4 hours with my Celestron C11 to capture this level of detail.

Planetary nebulae are relatively short-lived phenomena. They typically last only 10,000 years. The Cat’s Eye Nebula will gradually disperse over the next several thousand years and the central star will eventually cool down and slowly fade away as a white dwarf.
