In the wild it is almost extinct, mostly due to habitat destruction.
A.asterias is the smallest species of the genus Astrophytum.
The white flecking is very variable from clone to clone.
A few years ago this was a spectacular new cactus found in Mexico and described as a new genus - Digitostigma caput-medusae. Just a bit later D. Hunt thought it is just too similar to Astrophytum, let's change its name. Probably Mr. Hunt is right in this case.

This plant is a hybrid cultivar of A.myriostigma.
