Mexico-Nuevo Leon, 100-200m., in very restricted area.
This newly described species (in 2003) was in the new genus Digitostigma, a monotypic one, but later it was lumped into the genus Astrophytum.
It seems not too difficult to cultivate, but we have not enough experience nowadays. So, it is best to keep it grafted. By the way, it is still very expensive in the cactophiles world.
Astrophytum asterias Hybr. seedling(s), around 2 months old. Seeded December 18, 2011.
This one was like two conjoined seedlings that came out of the very same grain. Strange things can happen in nature, see also the older picture at around 2 days old: flic.kr/p/aZ87v6

(= Onzuka ranpo-gyoku)
Ranpo-gyoku means A.myriostigma in Japan.
The root "Ranpo" often disappeared in the name of cultivars from myriostigma whereas the word Kabuto is often preserved for the cultivars of asterias.
This is the most famous cultivar of myriostigma is also one of oldest of Astrophytum cultivars, from the beginning of seventies.
The flecking of cv.Onzuka is not a natural change.
These cultivars come from intraspecific hybridization between the various formas (tulense, nudum, strongylogonum, columnare).
Then the selection related to individuals whose flecking is exaggerated, like cv. Onzuka. So, the plants originated from seed are very different one to each other, and each shows particular white marks and patterns.
The caring of cv. Onzuka and others are the same with normal type plants.
