This delicate surface ornamentation is said to represent reduced areoles in some descriptions. However, they are not in the usual spiral arrangement and seem to be very delicate (easily brushed away) and resemble wax tubes when seen at higher magnifications. I'm not at all sure how to interpret them. Since the two specimens we have in cultivation are owned and lovingly cared for by my wife, I don't have the courage to cut sections or drip solvents on them
An Astrophytum myriostigma 'Onzuka' that was sown by me on Feb 17th, 12015! Always enjoyed looking at the fleck patterns of Astrophytum hybrids. The actual plant here is less than 2 cm wide!
