Assignment: pca 44 "Lead and follow"
Deadline: October 26th, 2008
From: Freule from Holland (Vanessa)
Mission: One of the most important things to think of (I think) - esspecially with landscape photography - is leading the look of from the front to the back of the photo. One of the most easiest way to do this is the use of lines that pull you in and lead you to the subject of the photo. Lines, natural or artificial, real or imaginary, are one of the most powerfull composition instruments. Think for instance of the one third rule where you use an imaginary grid to position your subject. But also think of a thread or a river that lead you to the subject.
My challange: Tell us a story. In this story use any of the technique-"lines" as written above to lead us to your subject. Be as creative as you like. I do not want to limit you further but with taking your picture please keep in mind that it should lead to something. Keep in mind composition and light.
WIT: While on a long weekend trip to Germany we passed through this garden in Karlsruhe and I really liked how the curved path served a lead line in the picture, with the people sitting and enjoying in the benches and the Arts Center in the background.
I do feel that there's too much grass and that those trees are a bit obtrusive, but I do feel this view is 100 times better than the other side of the building with the cars and streets ;-D.
For processing I downloaded the Lightroom trial to give it a test drive on a bunch or RAW from that trip, with it I upped the exposure added a grad to the sky, cropped a bit, added a bit of clarity and saturation and a soft vignette.
Not the strongest submission, nevertheless one I do like.

When I first bought these suspenders, the wife balked because she said they "aged" me. I promised I would not wear them outside the back yard so we were good to go...
Seems that the wife has now changed her attitude and wants me to wear them whenever there is a chance that I might have to bend over.
WIT: Wife pulling trigger.

Assignment 52: "Fine Art" -- Think about what would you might hang on your wall
This was a very interesting question to think about, particularly since I'm likely to be consolidating the art that now hangs in two houses into one house -- the house that's mostly windows. I didn't really come up with any useful answers, but enjoyed trying to define what aspects make me want to keep looking at an image, even on a daily basis, & what I prefer, as far as effect on my mood & outlook from the things that surround me.
The light in this one is so serene -- I'm sure it would make me happy if it hung on my wall. Though I think I do prefer a little more edginess for things I'd keep on the wall.

Assignment 52: From a chosen place, take photographs only of subjects that happen to be within a 5 meter (15ft) radius. This exercise forces you to really look at things and work to compose interesting images
I tried this from several different places. A link to my others:
Active Assignment Weekly - Surrealism.
Wow - this is a tough assignment as I can't do double exposure with my camera, and I don't have Photoshop or any such fancy thing. So, I have played about with what I have.
WIT:
I took some shots of my hand in front of the TV screen during whatever happened to be on - it was a movie of some sort. I had to go with what came up. Then, in PP I used the Polar Co-ordinates application.
The assignment: "circles." I snuck into the science teachers' lounge and arranged these on a table, then snapped. I don't think it turned out very well. I feel like there should be more beakers, or something. Hmm...
These are all my past assignments, which were done during the time when I was doing my MSc degree at the Oxford Uni.
Can't carry them home, so, I'd rather store them here yeah?

For my birthday I recently received the book Learning To Love You More by Harrell Fletcher and Miranda July. It is a book of artistic assignments that you can turn to if your creative well has run dry and you would rather someone just tell you what to do. That in itself can be a particularly freeing experience.
The catalyst for this image is Assignment 55: Photograph a Significant Outfit. Although the exact instructions call for you to photograph what you were wearing during a significant moment in your life, I tend to think of these clothes as a time capsule which immediately teleports me back to 1978. Plus learning to do The Hustle just doesn't qualify as a significant moment! ;-)
To complete the ensemble you must visualize a few items that I've lost along the way:
1. Puka shell necklace
2. Brown patent leather boots (you know, the ones that zip up the side)
For those of you who weren't born yet (or still in diapers) in 1978, Jimmy Carter was president, the movie Saturday Night Fever was a box office smash, the Bee Gees dominated the pop air waves and everyone was deceived into thinking that John Travolta was an excellent dancer... I guess a some things never change!
Don't ask me why I still keep these clothes tucked away in the back of my closet. Even if I could lose enough weight to fit into them again, I wouldn't be caught dead wearing them in public. I guess it's just something I bring out every few years to look at when I need a good laugh. Also, the great thing about polyester is that they look just as good today as they day I bought them!

Precious Memories
This is a wall in my room where I put all my favorite and most precious moments. I have a terrible memory so pictures of moments are really important to me and always make me smile when I look at them. If I'm ever feeling lonely, looking at these always gives me a warm feeling and reminds me of the importance of treasuring the moments I have with my loved ones.
When we disconnect from the source of the conveniences in our lives, whether they are as simple as switching on a light or as complex as bringing food to table, we lose a little bit of our appreciation for the amazing complexity of the world.
Nothing special about this one; I was playing with the 50 mm lens and depth of field.
Assignment - Light : This is the second in a series of assignments that I am working on with my friend Colorblindpicasso. We started a monthly photographic assignment to challenge ourselves to become better photographers, both technically and artistically. In this case, he's got me beat. Not only are his photos for the assignment awesome, he also got them in on time :)

WIT:
You don't have to comment on this photo, because I deleted the last one (that worm thing scared me after a while). But on a deeper level, I post things here sometimes for the wrong reason. This time I'm submitting it because I believe in it and don't care if anyone else wishes to validate it.
Right now I'm very stressed. I just became incorporated as a photography business and I'm applying for project grants to show in galleries. The gallery owners are all about money and product, and so I've been really trapped in this. My mission is to provoke storytelling in my community with the photos I create. Storytelling that provokes thought and opens minds to new ideas.
Then I saw this star flower on the ground. Lately I've been finding a lot of things on the ground, and think these things are sometimes very important. This flower is in a glass by my computer to remind me of what's important. I love all the submissions this week and always look forward to seeing what you all produce, and I'm also so amazed at how confident most of you are.
This is SOOC, except for a crop and a slight alteration in white balance.
Strobist umbrella specular assignment. Set-up pretty much as the assignment says, except i don't have an umbrella, so the flash is bare. It's about a meter from the background, up and right.
edit: looks like this is going to be the best i manage: final-ed.
The bare flash brings out the sweaty and gnarled complexion this assignment's been causing... The focus is a little off too, but then the assignment has been having that effect as well.
