First attempt at the Film Noir assignment from the Lighting 102 series.
YN-565EX at 1/16 power, slightly camera left, fired up and through the blinds.
SB-600 at 1/4 power with a homemade grid spot up 8+ ft high, camera right, angled down at faces.
On camera flash used as fill (1/8 power) and used to trigger both slaves.
When they started rehearsing for the production 'Familiar Strangers', Chua Yu Xuan, 22 (left) and Dorothy Chong, 20 (right) were strangers themselves. They hardly talked in school and their conversations were just simple greetings. The script involved intimate scenes, forcing them to push aside their awkwardness and get (physically) close to one another.
It was through rehearsing though that the pair got more familiar with each other. The more they exchanged lines, the closer they got. Conversation eventually went beyond the stage – they started to update each other about their daily lives and even made inside jokes about the production. // Chua Yu Xuan 22, (left) and Dorothy Chong, 20 (right) play a married couple in the production of 'Familiar Strangers'.
these are photos from my daughter's $20 disney princess camera that I took at the "assignment houston" meetup at the Houston Museum of Natural Science on Jul. 13
I asked people to tell me what to take pictures of. This is the closest you're going to get. It's actually an ape. Sorry.
With some more help from Liz, here's my film noir project using restricted light. There's two strobes in this, one sb900 with a snoot pointed through the car window at Liz, and a sunpak 433d in the seat next to her reflecting on the back window (to give the impression something is behind the car). Some small manipulation with GIMP to the levels and add some grain.
I looked around the house shortly after reading the assignment/exercise and quickly realized that there were far too many off-white (or light), matte surfaces in my house, and far too few dark shiny surfaces. After throwing myself upon the couch in frustration it hit me--the couch is made of somewhat shiny dark leather!
After deciding that I was going to use the aforementioned couch, I thought it would be a good idea to test the concept...here are the results. Not much to look at, but it proved that there was enough specular reflection to work with.
Strobist info: SB-800 (triggered with SC-19 off-camera cord) at ~1/4 power (hey, it was late!), bounced into white Wescott umbrella. Apex of umbrella was about 4-5 feet away from back of couch.
Active Assignment Weekly for December 28-January 3: Metal/Metallic
This week's assignment is to explore the challenge of photographing shiny metallic objects. The subject doesn't necessarily need to be made of metal, but it must convey the essence of being metallic (such as having the iridescent and reflective properties of metal). Heavily rusted metal does't count. Look for items like chrome, polished steel, freshly cut metal surfaces, spoons, foil. Buff it up and show me the shine.
Dare: Photograph a spherical object and/or incorporate lots of color
Restriction: None
This was yet another idea derived while sitting on the john. This is a toilet paper holder for spare rolls and I thought it would fit the assignment rather nicely.
So, I originally shot this with a black background but then I noticed the dare while I was adding my WIT and I thought I should reshoot it with some color :-) I am glad I did because I got this cool shadow with the lighter background.
WIT: Used my SB600 strobe on the floor pointing at the paper holder with the paper holder in between the camera and the flash. Tried different angles until I got a result I liked. In Lightroom cropped and upped contrast.
Just a couple of squidlike cephalopods, drawn up for class. The assignment is:
"Take one creature, Fantasy, Sci fi, whatever. Show five versions of it ranging from technical illustration to abstraction. (Tech. illus., realism, basic shape, return to line, abstract. ) Then arrenge them in a pleasing composition that would be suitible for a magasine article or storybook."
"Once completed the planning stage, submit it for reveiw" ...blah blah blah... " you are free to use mixed media, including limited 3D composition materials."
Err, yeah, this is only sketchbook stuff. It'll get better as it goes.

The character in the photo has become, not only in an outstanding soccer player; but also an excellent writer, and a good friend for all ESL students at WHS.
- Write a short paragraph identifying what other qualities should ESL students have to make their dreams come true.-
