Opinion is split on the merits of the £1.8m Redcar Beacon, focal point of the town's refurbished seafront. The beacon, an 80ft vertical pier designed to look like a helter skelter, opened in March 2013. The top floor, an open roof terrace, is reached via 132 steps - or a lift. Admission is free. The beacon was paid for by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, One North East and the European Regional Development Fund. The structure made a shortlist of six for the 2013 Carbuncle Cup, Building Design magazine's Worst Designed Building award.

I picked up this book at one of those book sales where overstocked books are sold for a dollar each. I mean, the cover was too good to pass up. Sue read it while we were in France and proclaimed the rest of the book not very good. So she left it in Paris.
