The Douglas C-47 Dakota is without doubt one of the most successful aircraft designs in history. It became one of the world's most famous military transport aircraft and saw widespread use by the Allies during World War Two and subsequently by Air Forces and civilian operators worldwide.

DAKOTA ZA947

The aircraft was adopted by Strike Command and issued to the BBMF in March 1993. In 2004, an original and authentic floor and interior was re-fitted to the Dakota, returning the cabin to the original, wartime specification. As there are now no other multi-engine tail wheel aircraft in RAF service outside the BBMF, the Dakota is an important training asset used for initial training of aircrew for the BBMF multi-engine aircraft and for renewing the currency of the Flight’s Lancaster pilots each year. In addition to this role though, the Dakota is a sought-after display aircraft in her own right and, as such, she appears regularly on the air show circuit either on her own or as part of a BBMF formation. She continues to be capable of para-dropping and is used in that role for special commemorative events.

ZA947 is now painted to represent Dakota FZ692 of No 233 Squadron, around the D-Day period in 1944. This aircraft, which was named ‘Kwicherbichen’ by her crews, was involved in Para-dropping operations on the eve of D-Day and subsequently in re-supply and casualty evacuation missions into and out of forward airfields in the combat areas.

Abandoned in 1962 with the completion of the Crookton Line Change, this 400 foot curved bore is part of the original A&P alignment somewhere circa 1882-ish. In 1897, the ATSF acquired the A&P assets and operated the route under the ATSF subsidiary Santa Fe Pacific railroad. A year later tragedy struck the route when wooden timbers supporting the tunnel caught fire - at least two men perished fighting the blaze. This prompted a reconstruction of the tunnel incorporating steel boilerplate replacing the original wooden shoring in the ceiling. During WWII the tunnel was considered of such military importance that guards were posted to prevent sabotage, and two wooden guard shacks were added at each portal. In 1943, Jack Delano photographed some of the wartime action here as requested by the Office of War Information.

More information can be found in David Myricks "Railroads of Arizona" Vol. 4.

Unfortunately, I am eating everything in sight right now..this has got to stop. I get little snippets of will power and resolve but they only last a day or so.

Good news...I have healed the slipped disk in my neck enough to have started running again. Also played my first soccer game in two months. Whoot! Great to be back at it.

This image was shot for Our Daily Challenge: Portraits from Behind

With a challenge like that, how could I resist??

Heads up - this is the first of a series of photos that I took today that will comprise my "Asset" series. Hee Hee Hee

YPOI-16 sits posed next to some more Browns Yard power while the crew takes lunch before starting their return trip to Oak Island. I'll have rosters of the Browns Yard power soon. April 25, 2020.

I met a young man last Saturday while doing my photo shoot in downtown Portland. It was hot, humid, and he had the stuff I was craving: a cold refreshing Lifesavers Popsicle. I actually had two while I stood and listened to his story. His name is Rico Rozilatti. Turns out he is a model from Jersey. The first thing I said was Nike (Their headquarters is in Beaverton) and instantly his eyes lit-up. He had just completed a photo shoot for the sneaker maker at their main complex. His next gig is a layout for Abercrombie & Fitch. The problem is the paycheck doesn’t always arrive immediately when you work for an agency like the one Rico works for. So, until then he does what he can due to frozen assets.

Inspired by Shaun D's superb photos of the newly refurbished Liverpool Library, I went to see it for myself. It is a most wonderful asset to the city, the architecture inside and out is truly fabulous, and the books contained within are a source of knowledge that can't be equalled by the internet in terms of the experience.
