USDA Foods are being packaged and delivered to 17,000 households eligible for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) in the Flint area to help address the ongoing water crisis. DHHDP packages are prepositioned in shopping carts in the onsite distribution area that includes receptionists, commodity shelves, assistants, and checkout counters. The DHHDP consists of an additional 14-pound nutrient-targeted food package, containing foods rich in calcium, iron, and Vitamin C â which are believed to help limit the absorption of lead in the body. This number of boxes will be distributed each month for four months. The food is in addition to the regular allotment that TEFAP recipients currently receive. In 1794 President George Washington authorized the manufacture of flintlock muskets and other military weaponry at the Springfield Armory located on a hill overlooking the Connecticut River in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts. For a 174 years, until it was closed in 1968, the "Arsenal of Freedom" made weapons for the fighting forces of the United States. Many a serviceman went into battle carrying a Springfield musket or rifle.

Much of the success of the Armory was due to its machinery and much of the success of the machinery can be attributed to American Inventor, Thomas Blanchard. Born in Sutton Massachusetts, Blanchard lived most of his life in Springfield. One of his first patented inventions was of a machine to make tacks. Blanchard was then hired by the Army to design machines to make guns. He spent much of his career working for the Armory. In 1818 he developed a copying lathe (profile lathe) that traced a model to turn gun stocks, producing the desired contour automatically. The invention of the duplicating lathe by Blanchard at the Springfield Armory was one of the most significant developments in American industrial history. It permitted exact duplication of irregular wooden shapes, such as gun stocks, wagon spokes and felloes, shoe lasts, any wooden object with an irregular pattern. This was an important step in creating mass production techniques. With this invention Blanchard started pioneering 2 manufacturing concepts that would not only change the Armory but the mechanical revolution itself: 1- interchangeable parts and 2- assembly lines. The duplicating lathe, known as the Blanchard Lathe, was soon being used in many other industries for turning of all kinds of irregular forms. The machine in the photo, called the Blanchard Irregular Turning Lathe, is the “second generation” of the wood-turning lathe developed in the 1850’s. This machine was more efficient and took up less space. The iron frame provided greater support, which permitted more accuracy. This particular machine remained in use long enough to be converted to electric power.

I really, really hope I can make it to Calabogie this year to take some shots of the cars in their natural habitat (the racetrack), but, as with the previous two years (2007 and 2008), I will at least be taking shots of the cars parked on Preston Street on Friday evening, and this time, I will be using all three of my current cameras (Nikon F65 35mm SLR, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LS75 digital camera, and my sister's ancient Fuji DL-8 fixed-lens snapshot camera for "lomo" shots). I will be taking some of the same kinds of shots that I've taken before, but I have a few new ideas so it won't be a complete rerun (same cars, same angles, different years).

That's a 1/24 Maisto "Assembly Line" Ferrari F430 model with the backdrop being the rear left rim of a Ferrari Mondial t. I actually brought the model with me because I wanted to get a shot of it framed by the "arch" at the southern end of Preston Street near Carling Avenue, but, unfortunately, there's extensive excavation work currently underway on Preston Street, so I couldn't get a clean shot of the arch without a bunch of construction fencing in the way.

By the way, this shot is a blatant self-conscious rip-off of this shot I took in Montreal in June 2001 of my 1/18 scale Mattel 100% Hot Wheels Ferrari F355 model photographed against a rim (which looks like it was another Mondial t).

“Apollo’s dressing room--Spacecraft systems are installed and checked in this giant clean room--the world’s largest--at North American Aviation’s Space Division, Downey, Calif. Room has more than 2,000,000 cubic feet of meticulously controlled air space. Here subsystems are installed and the completed command module is test with service module and launch escape system, then flown to Kennedy Space Center, Fla.”

Reasonable to deduce photo date as 20 October 1967?

Both Command Modules (and their respective Service Modules?) are unidentified. Is the curved panel on the dolly that of one of these Service Modules?

William Watkins, “Larkin Company Headquarters,” Digital Photograph, 1919, _New York Tourism 1919_, Gainesville, Georgia.

Designed in 1903 the Larkin Administration Building would become one of the most prominent architectural designs of the twentieth century. Larkin would employ architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design and oversee the construction of the innovative building. Wright, a very ingenious designer, would be one of the first architects to focus on functionality over artistic expression or appeal. The building would become famous for its unique features, such as plate-glass windows, built in desk furniture, suspended toilet bowls, and air conditioning; an invention barely a year old. In 1906 Larkin would hire famous sculptor Richard Bock to integrate human figures on the building to add some artistic appeal to the often criticized headquarters. When the Larkin headquarters was built the Larkin Soap Company was at its peak of success. The company had started manufacturing groceries, dry goods, furniture, and china sets. The company had implemented similar principles as Ford with its mass labor force; an assembly line being the most notable. To keep a demand in employment Larkin commissioned Wright to design and oversee the construction of row houses for all employees of Larkin. The move crippled the company adding to its initial loss from the Great Depression. By 1943 Larkin sold the Administrative Building along with others. The Larkin Company soon after would declare bankruptcy due to the substantial loss accumulated during the Great Depression and the change in American retail. Like the previous depressions that occurred in the U.S.A. society’s beliefs changed greatly due to the distrust placed in businesses. After the Great Depression many people began to distrust business and banks; which led the United States government to regulate business and economic affairs. This increased regulation led to the widespread belief that the government should maintain high employment and guarantee citizens a better life. This gave rise to the New Left, a more progressive-liberal movement in politics. Another notably change in American business was the unprecedented growth of labor unions and the general acceptance of socialistic ideals. The Administrative Building was foreclosed upon by the City of Buffalo in 1945 due to back taxes that had built up. Buffalo tried selling the building over the course of five years and considered other uses for the building. However during that time period the Administrative building was vandalized by various gangs. The Western Trading Company bought the building in 1949 and announced company plans to demolish it for a truck stop. This news was met with great criticism by both the architectural community and the city’s historical society. Though greatly unpopular the Western Trading Company demolished the building in 1950, sadly a truck stop was never built. All that is left from the historical building is a single brick pier which stands beside a railroad embankment.

ABOUT Sushi Girl from Assembly Line and Level Up Productions

SUSHI GIRL centers on the compelling character of a man called “Fish,” just released after six years in jail after successfully not ratting on those involved in the robbery that sent him to prison. The night he is released, the men he protected with silence celebrate his freedom with a congratulatory dinner. The meal is a lavish array of sushi, served off the naked body of a beautiful young woman. The sushi girl seems catatonic, trained to ignore everything in the room, even if things become dangerous. Sure enough, the unwieldy thieves can’t help but open old wounds in an attempt to find their missing loot, with violent results.

A culture that has been since the dawn of industrial production. They are known as workers of the assembly line who work tooth and nail breaking back and bone for our civilization. They were first industrial workers who protested against Communism before it got into Russia creating the Soviet Union. They saw the evils of Progressive governments that was everywhere from regimes down to socialism. Their culture was defined by the late 80's through inspiration by gothic culture, they went from wearing industrial jumpsuits and simple respirators to donning dusters, beater shirts, bullet proof vests, industrial utility belts, leather or camo pants and platform steel toed or stomp boots. They kept the assembly line gear such as respirators, gas masks and otherwise industrial protection, they added industrial necklaces and rings to their appearance making their culture less appealing to fashionistas. Their music goes as far back as the late 70's when post-punk met techno music or hardcore punk met machinery music giving birth to Industrial music or Industrial rock. Later in the late 80's came Industrial Metal which married industrial music to heavy metal and added electronica. The 90's brought some attention in the media to industrial music, by the early 00's rivethead culture and music became a huge teen rebellion! Teens everywhere listened to industrial metal and wore the fashions of rivetheads though they were referred to as 'drones' or mall-rivetheads. Rivetheads expressed their hatred capitolism as much as metalheads, punks and hippies did. Their music videos often show controversial material to make political statements about communism, fascism, monarchism and imperialism.
