Spring raindrops and Aspen leaves.

The leaves are turning. This is from Saturday, went up to Rocky Mountain N.P. to photograph sunrise and see what the leaves were doing. Above Bear Lake there was some good color, and a perfect day for hiking.

Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains near Virginia Lakes

Today I headed north in search of more fall color near the Virginia Lakes. I was disappointed to find the often vivid color found around the lakes pretty much done. I returned to my vehicle without even removing a lens cap.

Predicting fall color, especially good peak color is like trying to predict next week's winning lottery numbers. It's next to impossible and winning is more a result of luck than skill or some mysterious formula. Thankfully, Mother Nature gives us a little bit of a break and offers us all a fair chance to get in some serious leaf peeping every year in the eastern Sierra by staggering the color change of different slopes, plateaus, canyons and drainages. The leaves don't all change color at the same time and the color change window for good color is open for several weeks depending on location and weather. Take in mind, a strong storm can knock all the leaves down very quickly. In the eastern Sierra color change usually starts around mid to late September and can last into early November, but late October is probably a safer bet. Do your homework, pick some days, head on up and be prepared to explore various locations and I'm sure you will find some amazing fall foliage.

This photograph is a result of asking myself "I wonder what's down that road" then making the effort to go find out.

After Convict Lake, I took the drive over to June Lake to see what this place had to offer. Pretty much every area up there is phenomenal, but the June Lake Loop had to be my favorite place. The sun was harsh but I found some neat locations in an aspen grove near Silver Lake. Aspen trees are extremely difficult to shoot because they are so chaotic, but I'm really happy with this find.

Check out this 360 of the same aspen grove here.

Hiking near Flagstaff, AZ on the Humphries Peak Trail.

I love aspen trees but most of my pictures until now have been limited to fall and summer.

A stunning vista from the meadows of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. Green Pines and golden Aspen in the autumn lead the eye from the peaceful meadows to the towering mountain peaks, some with a dusting of snow on top. A harbinger of the winter to come? White puffy clouds in a deep blue sky resemble soft puffs of cotton framing the mountains.

Quaking aspen is a small-to-medium sized deciduous tree, characterized by almost round leaves that move with even a small breeze.

I grew up in Colorado and have fond memories of playing amoung the aspen trees in the summer. This shot reminds me of lying on the grass listenting to the rustling of the leaves on a hot day with a cool breeze...

The juxtaposition of hard, jagged mountain and soft, wispy mare's tail cloud caught my eye, along with the rare bright red aspens.

Lake Tahoe Aspen trees...showing signs of spring

February 19 2019

As we returned from taking in the sunrise in the Bells, a fellow photo enthusiast told us about Ashcroft. Its a small ghost town near Aspen, Colorado. It has a bunch of old structures, a hotel, a store houses and even a theater. It was between two hills and it was too early for good light, but the place was breathtaking. People moved here when transport involved a lot of physical labor, can't imagine y someone would do that. Silver that ran out soon.

Always chasing something that will just disappear some day, the hallmark of a species that makes us special.

I love aspen trees but most of my pictures until now have been limited to fall and summer.

Aspen trees, so dense and green. I can't image how beautiful color will be during Autumn time.

These aspen trees were easily the biggest I've ever seen. I could barely get my arms around the one seen in the center. Considering that most aspen trees are barely larger in diameter than a coffee cup, this is a very venerable section of forest. . . stay sharp America!

On a cliff from afar I tried to capture the famous Yankee Girl Mine (silver) that has been closed for 112 years.

At one time there were 6 towns and as many mines in this area. It's rich in silver, gold and copper.

Today the richness of fall colors is attracting people from the corners of the earth.

Magnificent hardly seems like a good enough word.

These pictures were all taken with a Minolta Dimage7 digital camera and a Harrison & Harrison 89B Infrared Filter. The filter necessitates the use of a tripod because most visible light is blocked and the shutter speeds are very slow. Shooting infrared is one time when you want to shoot in the middle of the day when the effect is most pronounced
