Here is a screenshot of my shell of choice, fish running in Gnome terminal.
I used "cat" to display this cheerful gift giving fellow (which I obtained from an ASCII art collection) when a new shell instance is started.

ASCII was written for paper tape, and rather badly adapted for early computers. Punctuation and accented characters get mangled.
