James Cleverly (centre at table), Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom and President of the Security Council for the month of July, chairs the first ever Security Council meeting on artificial intelligence (AI). This meeting, convened by the United Kingdom, addresses the topic “Artificial intelligence: opportunities and risks for international peace and security”. The Secretary-General delivered remarks during the debate stating, “I urge the Council to approach this technology with a sense of urgency, a global lens, and a learner’s mindset.”

The “Artificial Intelligence in Conservation” station is presented by the Center for Spatial Analysis to allow students to explore new technology and understand how it is being used to study and protect Florida’s wildlife. Students will be able to participate in demonstrations powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect and track animals, count people, and match poses. These interactive activities will be hands-on and use real-world examples to show how scientists use computers to perform complex tasks and answer many different questions about the world.

Three things students should learn:

1.There are a variety of uses for AI in conservation. These include detecting and identifying animals, tracking and counting objects of interest, and advanced tools like identifying poses.

2.AI is extremely useful but is not perfect! There are many challenges, such as incorrect or unexpected answers, that scientists still need to figure out to use AI for their questions.

3.You don’t need to work in the field or the laboratory to be a scientist! Conservation research can be conducted on animals and plants with coding, mapping, and statistics on a computer.
