In November 1974 I was sent to photograph Bath Place Community Venture in Leamington Spa for an article in the weekly student newspaper The Warwick Boar which reported;
"After much hard work by everyone concerned, Bath Place Community Venture is now in its seventh month and is flourishing. It aims to provide a creative environment and a focal point for people in Leamington.”
I turned up, completely unannounced, and with no background information walked into the adventure playground and just started taking photographs. This was the 1970s; the kids were more than flattered to have their photograph taken.

Demel is one of the most famous Viennese pastry at the carbon (cabbage) market (Kohlmarkt) 14 in the first Viennese district Innere Stadt. Demel was a k.u.k. Hofzuckerbäcker and runs this item today in public.
History
1778 came the of Wurttemberg stemming confectioner Ludwig Dehne to Vienna. 1786, he founded his pastry shot at the place of St. Michael. Dehne died in 1799 of tuberculosis. His widow then married the confectioner Gottlieb Wohlfahrt. In 1813 they bought the house in St. Michael's Square 14. Despite numerous innovations such as frozen the company's finances could not be rehabilitated. After the death of Gottlieb Wohlfahrt in 1826 the widow and her son from her first marriage August Dehne succeeded but the economic boom. August Dehne managed to great wealth, he invested in land. As the son of August Dehne struck another career as a lawyer, Dehne sold the confectionery in 1857 to his first mate Christoph Demel.
Demel also had success in the continuation of the company and established it to a Viennese institution. After the death of Christoph Demel in 1867 his sons Joseph and Charles took over the business, which is why it since "Christoph Demel 's Söhne" means. On request Demel received 1874 the Hoflieferantentitel (the titel as purveyor to the court). The proximity to the Imperial Palace directly opposite made business more profitable. The Hofburg borrowed from Demel occasionally staff and tableware for special occasions such as proms and parties. Recent developments in the art of confectionery were brought from Paris. Trained at Demel, professionals quickly found employment.
1888 Old Burgtheater was demolished at Michael's place and transformed the place. Demel had to move out of the house and he moved to the Kohlmarkt 14. The new store inside was equipped inside with high costs by purveyor to the court Portois & Fix. The interior is decorated in the style of Neo-Rococo with mahogany wood and mirrors. Regulars were members of the Viennese court as Empress Elisabeth, and other prominent members of the Vienna society of the time, the actress Katharina Schratt and Princess Pauline von Metternich. A peculiarity of Demel from the time of the monarchy is that the always female attendance, which originally was recruited from monastic students, is dressed in a black costume with a white apron. They are called Demelinerinnen and address the guest traditionally in a special "Demel German", which is a polite form of the third person plural, omitting the personal salutation and with questions such as "elected Have you?" or "want to eat?" was known.
After the death of Joseph and Carl Demel took over Carl's widow Maria in 1891 the management. She also received the k.u.k. Hoflieferantentitel. From 1911 to 1917 led Carl Demel (junior) the business and then his sister Anna Demel (4 March 1872 in Vienna - November 8, 1956 ibid ; born Siding). Under her leadership, the boxes and packaging were developed by the Wiener Werkstätte. Josef Hoffmann established in 1932 because of a contract the connection of the artist Friedrich Ludwig Berzeviczy-Pallavicini to Anna Demel. The design of the shop windows at that time was an important means of expression of the shops and there were discussions to whether they should be called visual or storefront (Seh- or Schaufenster - display window or look window). While under the Sehfenster (shop window) an informative presentation of goods was understood, the goods should be enhanced by staging the showcase. From 1933 until his emigration in 1938 took over Berzeviczy-Pallavicini the window dressing of Demel and married in 1936 Klara Demel, the adopted niece of Anna Demel.
During the Nazi regime in Austria the confectioner Demel got privileges from the district leadership because of its reputation. Baldur von Schirach and his wife took the confectioner under their personal protection, there were special allocations of gastronomic specialties from abroad in order to continue to survive. But while the two sat in the guest room and consumed cakes, provided the Demelinerinnen in a hallway between the kitchen and toilet political persecutws, so-called U-Boats. Those here were also hearing illegal radio stations and they discussed the latest news.
1952 Anna Demel was the first woman after the war to be awarded the title Kommerzialrat. She died in 1956. Klara Demel took over the management of the bakery. Berzeviczy-Pallavicini, who lived in the United States until then returned to Vienna. After Clara's death on 19 April 1965, he carried on the pastry. During his time at Demel he established the tradition to make from showpieces of the sugar and chocolate craft extravagant neo-baroque productions. Baron Berzeviczy sold the business in 1972 for economic reasons to the concealed appearing Udo Proksch, who established in 1973 in the first floor rooms for the Club 45; also Defence Minister Karl Lütgendorf had his own salon. After Proksch was arrested in 1989 in connection with the Lucona scandal, he sold Demel to the non-industry German entrepreneur Günter Wichmann. 1993 it came to insolvency. Raiffeisen Bank Vienna as principal creditor, acquired the property in 1994 from the bankrupt company to initially continue itself the traditional Viennese company through a subsidiary. In the process of the renovation in March 1995 on the fourth floor were mura painting from the 18th century exposed and the baroque courtyard covered by a glass construction which since the re-opening on 18 April 1996 can be used as Schanigarten (pavement café) or conservatory.
In 2002 the catering company Do & Co took over the Demel. The company was awarded with the "Golden Coffee Bean " of Jacobs coffee in 1999. Demel now has additional locations in Salzburg and New York.

One of the most famous specialty of the house is " Demel's Sachertorte" . The world-famous Sachertorte was invented by Franz Sacher, but completed only in its today known form by his son Eduard Sacher while training in Demel. After a 1938 out of court enclosed process occurred after the Second World War a till 1965 during dispute between Demel and the Sacher Hotel: The hotel insisted on its naming rights, Demel, however, could pointing out already since the invention of the "Original Sacher" called pie "having used the denomination". Demel had after the death of Anna Sacher in 1930, under defined conditions, the generation and distribution rights for "Eduard-Sacher-Torte" received. The dispute was settled in favor of the Hotel Sacher and the Demelsche cake is today, "Demel 's Sachertorte" and is still made by hand. While a layer of apricot jam under the chocolate icing and another in the center of the cake can be found in the "Original Sacher-Torte", is in "Demel 's Sachertorte " the layer in the middle omitted.
Besides the Sachertorte helped another specialty the pastry to world fame: the original gingerbread figures whose modeling came from the collection of Count Johann Nepomuk Graf Wilczek on Castle Kreuzenstein. Then there are the Demel cake (almond-orange mass with blackcurrant jam, marzipan and chocolate coating), Anna Torte, Dobos cake, cake trays, Russian Punch Cake, Esterházy cake, apple strudel and other confectionary specialties. Popular with many tourists are the candied violets with which Demel earlier supplied the imperial court and they allegedly have been the Lieblingsnaschereien (favorite candies) of Empress Elisabeth ("Sisi"). Rooms in the upper floors as the Pictures Room, Gold Room and the Silver rooms are rented for events. In addition to the pastry shop Demel operates, as it did at the time of the monarchy, a catering service, after the re-opening in 1996 as well as storage, shipping and packaging was desettled in the 22nd District of Vienna. Demel is also responsible for the catering at Niki Aviation.

Beijing - A TOTAL OF 52 Filipinos, most of them women and two of them pregnant, have been languishing in China's jails for allegedly
acting as "mules" to bring illegal drugs, mostly heroin, into the communist country.
This year's rise in the number of Filipinos detained in China for acting as drug couriers has alarmed Philippine officials.
Former Sen.Vicente Sotto III, head of the Dangerous Drugs Board, said a "very worried" President Macapagal- Arroyo had instructed him to meet with his Chinese counterpart so that they could discuss how to stop other Filipinos from falling prey to such schemes.
Sotto, who accompanied Ms Arroyo during her bilateral talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao on Saturday, noted that there had been only a few Filipinos arrested for drug trafficking in China in the past years.
Sotto said he planned to conduct an information campaign at the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration and at the Overseas Workers Welfare Association to warn Filipinos against accepting offers to become drug mules in exchange for a fee.
The issue over the detained Filipinos were not discussed during Ms
Arroyo's bilateral talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao.
Of the 52 Filipinos in jail, 50 are women, and the two pregnant ones are set to be deported for humanitarian reasons, Sotto said.
The average age of the detainees is 24 to 25, and most of them are professionals, he added.
The arrested Filipinos were not used as illegal drug couriers unwittingly because they have admitted to their guilt, according to Sotto, Seven of them have been convicted by the lower courts.

He said the Department of Foreign Affairs would see to it that the jailed Filipinos would have a fair trial, but would not take up the cudgels for them for the wrong they have done.
" Of course, we will never tolerate such a thing in any country especially if Filipinos are involved. The President will never tolerate anything that is connected to drug trafficking or to illegal drugs for that matter, "Sotto said.

Our world is amazing. It blooms with remarkable people, with art that can make us laugh, cry and even change our world view, with technology that can connect us to our loved ones on the other side of the world… and have you noticed there is a little thing many of us love called Pinterest that can nourish us with beauty and new ideas (as well as distract us for hours!)? The growth in social enterprises and cooperatives are showing us that business can benefit people and the planet, not just profit. I could go on. But then there is the elephant in the room: climate change. When I worked for Christian Aid, I met people in Kenya affected directly by global warming. I’m sure we have all listened to the warnings. It can feel overwhelming: too complicated, too many problems to overcome. But now there is an opportunity for us craft-lovers to be eco-warriors rather than weary worriers. At the end of this year global leaders will meet in Paris for the UN climate talks to sign new agreements on climate change and sustainable development, agreements that will determine what kind of future we are shaping for our children. We need our leaders to show vision and ambition to create a better future and that’s why I’m writing this ‘Good Read’ in this issue.

I founded the Craftivist Collective five years ago to create resources to help me and other people do effective and gentle activism using craft as the tool. I was - and am - inspired by life-changing activists such as the suffragettes, who gained votes for women, and Nelson Mandela, who ended apartheid: people who showed that campaigning works. Over the years of honing my craft in strategic activism through needlework I’ve noticed that we crafters can have real impact. Politicians and businesses take note when we stand up for what we believe: our craftivism gifts for influential people can encourage them to be the change they wish to see in the world. The time and thought that goes into our craftivism pieces shows genuine commitment and questioning. The media want to cover our attractive campaigning, people nervous of activism join our stitch-ins, and passers-by are intrigued by our craftivism. The Climate Coalition, the UK’s largest group of people dedicated to action on climate change, launched their “For The Love Of Climate” campaign this year. They have 11million supporters through a network of over 100 organisations from environmental and development charities to unions, faith, community and women’s groups. We thought craftivists and craft lovers would be a good addition and Clare Fussell, Campaigns Manager at The Climate Coalition, agrees: “Unless world leaders know that people from across the world with different passions, hobbies and backgrounds all care, they won't have the mandate to take strong action on climate change. Wae all need to be climate changeMAKERS.”
So... for the love of our world
Let’s re-imagine how we can live and help world leaders recreate our world. Join us. To make and wear your green handmade heart on your sleeve is a small, positive, beautiful and therefore influential and powerful act for at least three reasons: It’s personal. Craftivism is a thoughtful approach to activism: it’s about slowing down, using the comfort of craft to really grapple with world issues and think critically about how we can help solve them, from changing our habits and consumer choices to adding our voice to campaigners before the Paris UN climate talks. Craft can be a catalyst for open, honest and friendly discussion. By stitching what you love on your heart banner (bluebells, bumblebees or even beautiful buttons!) you are showing people that you are genuinely concerned about our world, not ignoring the problem. Craftivists unite. Make your hearts as attractive and intriguing as possible, wear them every day, share them online with us. Let’s create an aspirational vision of our world to excite, empower and encourage others to pick up their craft tools and join us. Seeing your heart on your sleeve alongside so many others is inspiring and should entice them to join.
So pick up your fabric scissors, and start shaping the future of our world into a more sustainable, beautiful place for all. Craft alone or with friends, family, or even set up a public stitch-in and bring the discussion to passersby and at other events.

Full text: change of heart so that the higher and purer things of life may be desired. "By the Waters of the Minnetonka," Indian song; "Spring, Spring, Spring," an expanding of the heart towards awakening joys of nature; and "Tap Tippy, Tap" a threnody to blithesome and busy Mr. Woodpecker were the media of her art.
Mr. Arthur J. Goyette rendered the verses of "Till We Meet Again" with quartet chorus accompaniment, himself making one, the quartet continuing the oft-repeated "Long, Long Trail" to the audience's gusto and response of approval.
The announcement by Mr. Charles B. Hayes of the "Broom Shop Quartet" created laughter which was no directed at the members of this combination but rather at the name, suggestive of fellow-laborers in durance. This organization sag, "Carry Me Back to Old Virginia" and "Keep the Home Fires Burning." The people of the inside could tell that these are a happy group of four good sports. full of fun and throwing music off because it's the best expression of good-fellowship.
Miss Mable Starbird accompanied the Glee Club of which she is the leader, Miss Anna Davenport was the accompanist of the singers and orchestra.
Previous to the concert, the M. S. P. Band gave a band concert, and at the request of Deputy-Warden Hendry, Harry Kimball rendered "A Perfect Day" and "Ja-da," his rich and resonant baritone is always a delight to hear, and undoubtedly many here have been consoled, for, at least, the time being, by listening to his singing.
After the concert Warden Shattuck announced the presence of the author of "Good-Bye, America," Mr. W. J. McKeever, the composer being Mr. James A. Brennan, and Kimball sang this song at the Warden's request and to the desired repetition ad infinitum on the part of those present. A number of these songs found their way to the musically inclined of this prison, gratis, supposedly with the donations of music frequently received, but this night's incident would make it appear to have been through the generosity of Mr. McKeever.
To cap the climax of an evening notable for the success of entertainers and delight of the entertained, Warden Shattuck beckoned the Hon. Edw. C. R. Bagley down and Mr. Bagley recalled to us the words of Maj. Gen. Edwards in regard to two "jailbirds" he knew personally in his division. Mr. Bagley introduced one of these men, Mr. James M. Sharpe, who has been decorated with the Croix de Guerre and other distinctions. Mr. Sharpe was too bashful to speak, but acknowledged with a couple of salutes the audience's fervid welcom. Just think of it, that young fellow adventuring out into No-Man's-Land to almost certain death, not once but again and again and performing prodigies of valor, then to be unable to face friends, who flustrate him by an attack upon his modesty- nothing could daunt his heroism, the limelight and the effusiveness of friends prove the only foe that can subdue this brave American. Two weeks ago, Tunisia's ruling Islamist Ennahda party proposed that a controversial article be included in the new constitution. "Article 27," as it is known, states that "the state guarantees to protect women's rights, as they stand, under the principle of man's complement within the family and man's partner in developing the country." In protest against the article's use of the word "complement", demonstrations were held in the capital city of Tunis, as well as a number of other cities across the country.

The illustration is derived from deeds circa 1730 pointing to a crossing on the Willimantic River. The crossing and related interconnected paths come from a variety of sources: deeds, 1800s county and school district maps as well as 1890s, 1940s and more recent USGS maps.
The routes illustrated align with the signatures of similar path structures found throughout southern New England.

The illustration is an interpretation of John Chandler's road from Woodstock to Hartford on his 1705 Map of the Mohegan Sachems Hereditary Country, showing the possible crossing on the Willimantic River above what is labeled on Chandler's map as Ow-wae-nung-gan-nunck. As Trumbull notes:
“Ow-wee-on-huny-ya-nuch' (Moh.): a place ‘where the people go to catch salmon’ on Willimantic river, ‘half a mile below the road from Hartford to Woodstock.’ Chandler's Survey, 1705 : Owwaenunggannunck, ibid. (Map). Between Willington and Tolland.” (Trumbull, 41)
Note, from R.A. Douglas-Lithgow below. It's plausible to suggest that the location is at or near, or below the bend of the Willimantic River, just below the road from Woodstock to Hartford. There is a large bend just below the ford for the Woodstock to Hartford Road over the Willimantic River and another winding bend further downstream. A 1759 land transaction survey notes a beaver dam on the Willimantic River in the vicinity of the place ‘where the people go to catch salmon’ (Willington Land Records, Book C, Page 402).

People favourably respond to Change
Generally speaking, people don't change for the better when criticized. But they do respond favourably to praise.
Huaxi Cun is not the worst place in China, and it has been following and sometimes leading the objectives and trends of the government and Chinese people - first it was to get rich - and clean up the mess later. We did this in the West on our own schedule, some Chinese are doing it now under the generally hypocritical pressure of the global community.
人们对改变的有利反应

An aspirational monument - if you choose to see it that way..
When I was invited to Huaxi Cun for the inauguration of the “Village in the Sky”, (www.tudou.com/programs/view/05XpJXkiNwI/ ) I spoke of the new tower as a beacon for all to see, not in terms of opulence and excess, but as a towering 3 element "Symbol of Sustainability" - an aspirational symbol rising above all else - including the cookie-cutter villas, the grubby factories, the money focus and the faux world landmarks - to shock and awe viewers into realizing that all monuments have a message – and this one should inspire people to make the connection between Heaven, Earth and the People (Tian, Di, Ren 天地人) and that to achieve Wu Renbao’s “Heaven on Earth”… the Triple-Bottom-Line balance between Society, Environment and Economy (社会,环境,经济)must become Huaxi’s new ethic.

"Now that Huaxi village is rich, what's next?"
Following my presentation, the new building’s architect Ma Xusheng, in turn praised my interpretation of his building’s design, saying that no one had thought of it before, but that “with your new ‘Society, Environment, Economy ‘meaning attached, our building is even richer”.
At a private dinner with village leaders the evening before, I had shamelessly asked: “Now that Huaxi village is rich, what’s next?” – hoping to encourage them to expound on how they were going to share Huaxi’s wealth and expertise with other communities and to build sustainable enterprises based on a model ecological civilisation… however the response was understandable, as a bit more thinking is required; and considering most people’s focus was still on showing off and celebrating what they have achieved so far, the answer was a simple “Gambei!”
