Farmers market draws large crowd
Farmers, vendors draw crowd to Festival Plaza

Jacksonville, Texas, tomato grower Kevin Kadlecek wasn't quite sure what to expect Saturday when he set up for the first time at the Shreveport Farmers Market. But, he was pleasantly surprised.
"I've never seen anything like this," he said between stacking up baskets of plump red and green tomatoes and taking orders from the steady stream of people who came to his stall under the west pavilion. "It's been wonderful and better than any of the others I've been to."
More than 12,000 people filed into Festival Plaza on Saturday to fill shopping carts, colored totes and wagons with produce, crafts, spices and meat on the first day of the market's summer season. The market is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
"We're having a fantastic day," said manager Noma Fowler-Sandlin said, adding everyone was "buying and selling like mad."
Long lines of residents snaked in and around the plaza's covered pavilions for a wide assortment of fresh produce that ranged from cabbage to watermelon.
With beignets, meat pies and other Louisiana favorites available, it wasn't uncommon to see shoppers munching along as they grabbed a helping of green beans or a basket of squash. Market favorites appeared to include Bradley's sweet corn, which attracted a line of residents that stretched well out onto Crockett Street for most of the morning.
"If you don't come early, you won't get any," said Mike Chastine, who's been coming to the market for the past four years. "They're usually out by 7:30 a.m."
Lee Koehn, a member of the Bradley, Ark., Mennonite family that grows the corn, said he's seen the market grow significantly in the last five years.
"When we first got here, there were maybe 20 vendors," he said. Saturday's market included 149.
Roberta Payne, who has sold produce at the Shreveport Farmers Market since it started in the 1980s, said the number of shoppers has increased over the years, too.
The growth has been so significant that the market had to expand this year, which resulted in enough space to bring back artists after a two-year absence.
Kathryn Usher, a local artist who returned to the farmers market Saturday, said she is glad to be back because the atmosphere helped her gain direct feedback on her work, which helped her continue to develop as an artist.
New artists, such Ryan McCutcheon, who helped work on the Shreveport Convention and Tourist Bureau mural, were equally as excited to be participating in the market because of the amount of people who were exposed to their art.
The modern Shreveport Farmers Market started in 1986.
It was located in what is now the Red River District and eventually moved to the railroad bridge next to SciPort before going to its current location at Festival Plaza.
Fowler-Sandlin said over the past four years the market has grown so significantly that it seems to be becoming "the place to shop."

But many modern day crafters are reviving the cross-stitch art but giving it a modern day twist. Many produce scenes or badges that have a gaming or online feel to them.

Polish designer and teacher Ewa Satalecka interviewed José and Veronika for the design magazine 2+3D. The six-page article covers questions about long-distance collaboration and the way of designing type faces together. It also shows some very nice examples of various available TT typefaces. Erratum, unfortunately the publisher did not properly mark the poster showing Edita, as being designed by Pilar Cano, and apologises for the mistake.

人物简介
大龙 原名菲利普·麦克马斯特，年龄保密，来自加拿大蒙特利尔北部的山区，独立环保人士。因为喜欢中国，他给自己取名大龙。他是电视纪录片白求恩的扮演者，但这只是他中国生活的很小一部分。他还有很多头衔，商务可持续发展麦克马斯特学院的首席研究员及创始人，加拿大蒙特利尔大学HEC商学院MBA教授，香港中文大学MBA教授，中科院客座研究员。
如果有一天，你在街边碰到一个留着大胡子的高鼻梁老外，他或许还穿着一身有点破旧的八路军军装，冲着你伸出三根手指头说“经济社会环境”或“天、地、人”，你可千万别感到意外。和他一起合张影吧，记得以后每次照相时，伸出你的三根手指头，而不是俗套的“剪刀手”，加入大龙的行动一起来保护地球。
为什么是三根指头？大龙掰着食指、中指和无名指，逐个念着“经济、社会、环境”或是“天、地、人”，每一根指头代表其中一个词，只有三者平衡，世界才会可持续发展。他懂的中文不多，这几个词却发音准确，因为常挂嘴边。
多年来，大龙一直致力于可持续发展这一世界性重大课题，发起了世界“和平+1”可持续发展项目。2008年，大龙把自己进行可持续发展事业的办公室设在北京。他相信，中国人有以“天地人和”为基础的传统文化，一旦行动就可改变世界。
“八路”背着公仔宣传公益
初次见到大龙，他背着一个破了口的大包，身穿八路军军装和白裤子，头戴八路军军帽，大把的络腮胡子遮住了他大半个脸。他会先从手机里翻出照片告诉你，他曾在电视里扮演过白求恩。
他会让你注意军帽上排成三角形的三颗黑色小纽扣，这是他接下来要讲的重点。随后，他从包里翻出了“三指理念”的海报和他的小伙伴——两只已经不怎么白的一大一小熊猫公仔和一只肚皮破了线的小黄鸭公仔。熊猫是中国的象征，而鸭子则代表着快乐，缺一不可，它们陪着大龙走过很多地方，已被无数人拥抱过。
熊猫原本胖嘟嘟的上肢，被大龙戴上了白手套，而手套也被做成了三指手势。
大龙喜欢让你抱着熊猫或鸭公仔，和他一起做“三指手势”，大声喊出“天地人和”，如果碰到的是和他一样的老外，他更愿意喊“经济社会环境平衡”，因为西方的文化理解这个口号。他会带着相机，随时随地收集世界各地的人摆出的三指姿势，并在网络上传播和分享。
三指手势又被称为“和平+1”可持续手势。在北京定居的7年里，每结识一个人，大龙都会伸出三个指头，和你聊一聊经济社会环境平衡，他会告诉你，每个人都有责任和义务停止继续污染环境。“我很高兴地看到，许多中国公民付诸行动。”
执着的环保宣传者
大龙说，“三指理念”开始于2006年。那时他正在香港中文大学教授MBA，课程内容是经济、社会和环境。但他发现，很多学生不理解这三个词之间的意义。“我需要去引导他们理解其中的含义，理解三者的平衡。”
大龙研究中国文化，把他的可持续发展理念和中国的传统文化相结合，这样就会更容易让中国人理解。现在的大龙，知道“一生二，二生三、三生万物”，老子、孔子、太极、阴阳平衡不离嘴边。
作为白求恩的扮演者，他把白求恩精神和他的可持续发展理念捆绑在一起，经常在很多场合穿着这身八路军军装出镜。他也和很多明星合影，让明星和他一起摆出三指姿势。
菲利斯在一次活动上认识了大龙，接触多了，菲利斯感受到了大龙做公益环保背后的辛酸。大龙生活简单，经常一天只吃一顿饭，“他没有挣钱的概念，所有心思都在三指项目上，那是他的价值。他的厕所墙壁写满他的计划，房间堆满各种书稿，与他见面聊的都是他的可持续理念。他的执着和乐观超乎常人。”
大龙的周三倡议
为了让大家行动起来，大龙发起周三倡议，周三是每周中间的一天，他希望大家不妨就在这一天做些小小的努力：学会微笑、尝试改变和拔掉插头节约用电。
大龙说，挑选一件事在周三来做一个改变，比如把那些暂时不必被插上的插头一个个拔掉，减少碳排放量。又比如关掉手机三小时，忘记QQ、微信、微博，走出去交朋友。再比如，爱吃肉的你，这一天就吃素吧。“小事情不断重复地做，你就会发现改变。”

the witch doctor’s “office” was built of the same modern materials as the local hospital, but i chose to interpret that as proof of this institution’s resilience. my guide kindly confirmed the locals “sometimes” visit the witch doctor, yet what a visit would entail remains a mystery to me.

The northern part of the Carinthian road
Kärntner Straße is next to ditch (Graben) one of the most famous streets in Vienna's city center. It starts at Karlsplatz or the Friedrichstrasse and bypasses the Vienna State Opera, continues straight to the center of Vienna, Stephansplatz. Where the pedestrian zone is continued in a westerly direction from the ditch. In northeastern direction it is connecting after the Stephansplatz with the Red Tower road (Rotenturmstraße) that leads up to the Danube Canal.
History
Just between 1878-1909 existent: The Kärntnerhof-Passage instead of the hotel Astoria today (No. 32)
The Carinthian road already existed at the time of the Romans in Vienna. In the Middle Ages it was in 1257 first documented as "Strata Carinthianorum" and linking the city center with the Carinthian Gate of the city wall (near the present opera), its extension was at that time an important connection to the port cities such as Venice and Trieste. There are to be found various spellings, in 1563: "Cärnerstrass", 1566: "Khärnerstrass" about 1567 "Khärnnerstrassen", "Kahrnerstrass", 1587: "Kärnerstras", 1749 "Karnerstrasse".
About 1968, still without pedestrian zone
In the period of promoterism (Gründerzeit) and the later 19th Century it was widened and heavily remodeled. The Carinthian Court, a representative Passagenbau (passage building) erected in 1878 by the architect Otto Thienemann was, for example, 1909/10 torn down and replaced by the Hotel Astoria. In 1945 the Carinthian road was severely affected, which subsequently led to numerous renovations and new buildings. Also due to the here traditionally high economic activity, however, there are permanently transformations.
In 1974, the Carinthian road between Opera and Stephansplatz was by the architects Wilhelm Holzbauer and Wolfgang Windbrechtinger transformed to a pedestrian zone (opening 6th August 1974), which is bordered by numerous stores with raised price levels, such as, for example, Glashaus J. & L. Lobmeyer which was founded in 1823 and several cafes. The Carinthian road forms together with the trench (Graben) and the carbon market (Kohlmarkt), the so-called "Golden U" on traditional downtown shopping streets disposing of a superior offer and designed as pedestrian zones. Below the road is the metro line U1 . Today the road is mainly frequented by tourists. 2009, the pedestrian zone was redesigned, which in the run-up of the activities led to controversy - especially over the originally planned, modern lighting fixtures.
A new focus was added in 2011 with a major department store, the flagship store (Weltstadthaus).

For my long term project at college, I chose to photograph my friend Greg and his Lupo. The final task was to put 15 images together into 5 magazine pages. I'm quite impressed with my final result. The text in the article is simply just Lorum Ipsum.
