WEEK 1 of Encaustic Painting with Jef Gunn. This week students prepped painting surfaces and learned several different techniques including how to mix rabbit skin glue gesso.

From a recent interview: Mr. Oppenheim: And I said, Okay, let’s explore phenomena.
Let’s see if there is a program out that could replicate in the virtual world the dynamics of phenomena like a water drop or an upheaval or an explosion and things like that.
I was after—I thought my show in Germany should be architecture, ideas for buildings.
And one idea was to approach a building as if it were the outcome of an event, an event being like an explosion or a water drop or a flood or a tidal wave.
And that led up to this Splash Building, this building that theoretically would be formed by the simple event of a water drop, a big teardrop.
Here’s the teardrop again splashing upwards.

The Springfield Art Association will host an opening reception for a nationally juried ceramic exhibition entitled Shapes of Influence on Friday evening, August 3rd, from 5:30-7:30 PM. Awards and a gallery talk by juror Simon Levin will occur at 6:45 PM.
The show will be on display in the SAA's M.G. Nelson Family Gallery from August 3-September 1 and features work from over two dozen states and Canada.

100-foot statue of a giant embedded in the earth, struggling to free himself, located at National Harbor in Prince George's County, Maryland, USA, just outside the District of Columbia. It was created by J. Seward Johnson, Jr. and originally installed at Hains Point, Washington, D.C..

Motivation: Aster is an attempt to communicate the subtle and intrinsic beauty of the most common variety of plants (Asteraceae - sunflower family).
Mark making & etching onto foam rectangles, mixing paint then rolling onto foam and pressing onto paper; printers hand-print.
Many of SoHa Arts Building makers, Soha SMART Board Members and students as well as makers from NextFab Studio and many friends and family took a tour bus to World Maker Faire New York to spend the day making, inventing, learning, getting inspiration and just plain having F U N !

In this work, I have combined what I feel to be the most important aspects of a public artwork.
The first is reference to the site, or location and the second is the function of the place it is sited in.
The lighthouse proposal incorporates the Harbor location as well as considering the function of the police station through the incorporation of the helix configuration.
This work underscores of one of most important developments found in police work today- the strengthened powers of investigation and diminished possibility of error in the delicate process of determining guilt or innocence.
