Over the course of a three-month residency at the McColl Center for Visual Art the artist created an unconventional portrait of Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976), the physicist best known for his Uncertainty Principle.
The sculpture's components are instruments used in the measurement of time and space, albeit on levels wholly inadequate to Heisenberg's field of quantum mechanics.
While the composition appears to be random, the suspended elements coalesce into a likeness of the scientist when viewed from a single, unique perspective (the anamorphic phenomenon).
Biographical subtext aside, Disorders of Magnitude is a metaphor for the elusiveness of knowing oneself or others.

Art Classes were offered to the public after the Depot Museum's opening in 1976. This woman is participating in a Painting Class held in the museum's Freight Room.
The Freight Room was a community meeting facility for many years. Classes and meetings were held in this large open room.

The same clay-like material in "Five Stone Drawings" appears again at monumental scale in "Clay Wall." The material is here applied about a foot deep across an entire 15' by 30' wall of a gallery. When the clay was fresh, Goldsworthy cut a large circle deep into its surface. Over the course of the exhibition; as the material dries, shrivels, and generally succumbs to the processes the artist expects of it; the circle becomes ever more apparent within its increasingly tormented surround. "Clay Wall" is a synthetic, museum adapted version of a type of work he's been doing in natural settings for a number of years -- incising geometric and biomorphic shapes into the mud of drying ponds then returning to photograph the expression of the shapes in the parched, cracked surface at the end of the dry season. That the works in nature exist horizontally on the ground and the effort in the museum exists vertically on the wall seems odd when you think of it, but this paradox doesn't make the work any less visually dramatic.

Garden of Constants at the College of Engineering includes a black walkway, connecting the buildings. 50 individual formulas are cast in bronze and embedded in handmade pavers. The formulas highlight the activities performed in the four buildings surrounding the courtyard, emphasizing the theme of constant numbers.

The artist was inspired by a new color called Opera Pink. After applying the paint, the technique suggested a butterfly amid the flowers.
The Springfield Art Association will host an opening reception for a nationally juried ceramic exhibition entitled Shapes of Influence on Friday evening, August 3rd, from 5:30-7:30 PM. Awards and a gallery talk by juror Simon Levin will occur at 6:45 PM.
The show will be on display in the SAA's M.G. Nelson Family Gallery from August 3-September 1 and features work from over two dozen states and Canada.

Two elements.
Water jet cut corten steel, rotating motor, timer, lights.
The starting point for Battle Drums was the Varus Battle of 9 A.D. which took place near the site.
It is this swirl of death, here shown in revolving light, which underlines the universal outcome of all wars.
The battle was a massive attack employing thousands of spears hurdled into the air which rained on trapped and confused approaching Romans soldiers.
Like a torrential rain storm, long steel spears fell upon the approaching soldiers.
Battle Drums focuses on this action and subjects it to motorized revolutions of a turntable producing an endless pattern of cascading spears over and over again on the Romans figures.

Fourteen identical sculptures emanate computer synchronized kinetic light. They are sited on the second story of the El Paso Civic Center to create an elevated pedestrian promenade, which circles the civic center. The circa 1964 building becomes the canvas for a subtly shifting display of brilliant colored light.
