The Commanding General’s 2018 Spring Company Commanders Staff Ride took place over 12-14th March and visited the Historical First World War battle sites around Liege, Belgium and Verdun, France.

The Mission of the staff ride was to provide selected Junior Officers a professional development opportunity that was highlighted by senior officer mentoring.

During the staff ride participants were able to walk the terrain of actual battle sites to discuss and examine tactical decision making and the evolution of those tactics as the war progressed. Participants also analyzed the American Expeditionary Forces involvement during the war and gained a greater appreciation of the human dimension of soldiering.

The sites visited included the forts of Barchon and Douamont as well as war memorials such as Voie Sacree, Montfaucon and Montsec as well as the American Cemeteries.

In honor of Black History Month (February). I salute my father, a two-time war veteran (Vietnam {Conflict} War & Korean War).

It wasn't until after his death while going through his papers that I learned in addition to many medals he earned, one was a Purple Heart for an act of bravery during one of those wars.

This photo was taken of him at the Memorial for Tuskegee Airman in Walterboro, South Carolina. On this day he shared as a young boy, watching the men clean the "red tips" on their airplanes is what inspired him to want to go into the military and fly around in airplanes. Although he didn't become a pilot (he did not have a college education), he became a radio operator which placed him in the "cockpit" along with the pilot and co-pilot.
