During Army Days at Fort Tejon State Historical Park near Lebec California, a "spongeman" demonstrates for the crowd how he cleans the cannon bore with the sponge dampened with water between shots. This action cooled the barrel and quenched any remaining embers before a fresh charge was introduced. The sponge is made of a long staff or rammer with a piece of fleece sheep or lambskin wound about its end. The fleece or lambskin helps to scou the cannon bore.

Our Friendship Force group came on a small event when we arrived on Castle Hill. There were mounted soldiers (probably retired) in old uniforms. We were told this was the annual celebration of "Army Day." It was the anniversary of retaking Budapest (Buda, back then) from the Ottoman Turks on May 19, 1686, There were a number of men in modern uniforms among the spectators. I presume that they were military attaches from the various embassies.
