U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers engage with Tough Mudder participants at the Army sponsored obstacles and challenges as part of the Tough Mudder in Black Diamond, Wash., September 27, 2014. Soldiers are on-site to showcase Army Reserve opportunities and to encourage and interact with the participants.
The Army’s Tough Mudder sponsorship enables the Army to engage a key audience about Army values and service; the ability to serve part time and to showcase the opportunities that exist in the Army Reserve to help motivated men and women achieve their professional and personal goals.
The Army’s sponsorship program is aimed at highlighting the unique service opportunities available in the Special Operations and the Army Reserve to Tough Mudder participants seeking to test their mental, emotional, and physical strength. (U.S. Army photo by Spc. Heather Doppke/released)

During the Civil War, Noncommissioned Officers led the lines of skirmishers, which preceded a regiment. Noncommissioned Officers also carried the national and regimental colors of their units. This deadly task was crucial to maintaining regimental alignment and aiding commanders in locating units on the battlefield.
The Indian Wars between 1861 and 1885 usually consisted of numerous scattered skirmishes over wide areas. This type of war led to the further enhancement of an NCO’s role as a small-unit leader. Often fighting in small detachments, troops relied heavily on the knowledge and abilities of their NCOs.
In 1885, the first retirement system was established for enlisted men. The system allowed a man to retire after 30 years of service with 75 percent of his active duty pay and allowances.
Advances in technology during the last half of the 19th Century greatly affected the NCO Corps. The Army was forced to compete with industry for technical workers. In 1908, Congress approved a pay bill, which rewarded those in technical fields in order to maintain their services. A master electrician in the Coast Artillery made $75-$84 per month, while an infantry sergeant major earned $25-$34 per month. The infantry sergeant major made about the same as a sergeant in the Signal Corps ($34-$43 per month).
The 2011 U.S. Army Soldier Show performed at Bunch Physical Fitness Center in Storck Barracks on Saturday June 4 and delivered a colorful, energetic mix of music, dance and performances for the 366 people who attended.
The theme of this year’s show was “Carnival - A Traveling Thank You.”
The opening act was true to the carnival theme with the performers in brightly-colored costumes, catchy music and a carnival barker in bright red tails and top hat.
The show also included a Polynesian-themed dance, a rousing rendition of the Charlie Daniels Band song “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and a soulful final number with all of the Soldiers in their dress blues.
The Soldiers who perform in the Soldier Show come from active and reserve component duty assignments worldwide. Before the show takes to the road the Soldiers rehearse for three months.
When they are ready they spend about seven months on the road, performing for Army audiences in the United States, Europe and Korea.
At the conclusion of the tour the cast and crew return to their duty assignments and continue to work in their military occupational specialties.
Following Saturday’s show Sgt. 1st Class Chyntia Turner, the Soldier’s Show Noncommissioned Officer in Charge, presented U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach commander Col. Christopher M. Hickey and Command Sgt. Major Lester Stephens a commemorative plaque.
Also after the show the cast met with the audience, signed autographs and posed for photos.

Reconstruction Task Force 4 (RTF 4) soldiers have returned home to Australia after a gruelling 6-month tour in Afghanistan.
During the tour, which began in April, RTF 4 pushed deep into the former Taliban stronghold of the Baluchi Valley, denying the area to the Taliban and building a major patrol base – Patrol Base Qudus – which split the insurgents and cut their major supply line through Oruzgan to Helmand Province.
RTF 4 has handed over responsibility for its area of responsibility to the 1st Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force.
