Skopje is the capital of North Macedonia, located on the Vardar river. The city was almost completely destroyed by the 1963 earthquake, and the centre has been rebuilt in different styles ever since. In the last fifteen years, the huge “Skopje 2014” project added even more: large neoclassical buildings, columns, museums, and dozens of new bronze statues around the river and the main square. In this photo you see a semi-circular colonnade with classical pillars, lined with bronze female figures. This structure stands at Mother Teresa Square, directly in front of the Macedonian Opera and Ballet. It looks like an open-air stage or a symbolic temple – modern sculptures presented in an antique skin. These neoclassical forms are typical for the Skopje 2014 project: a modern city reinventing itself by reaching back towards a timeless classical ideal, blending past and present in the new centre of Skopje.

On the opposite side of the narrow valley, one can see the unusual farm buildings of the monastery in the form of large Ukrainian huts. In fact, the roofs of these buildings are nothing more than protruding rocks, to which only one wall was added, and a large barn turned out. Monks breed there all kinds of livestock for food: chickens, turkeys, geese. There are also vegetable stores and other utility rooms.

На противоположной стороне узкой долины видны необычные хозяйственные строения монастыря в виде больших украинских хат. На самом деле крыши этих строений не что иное, как выступающие скальные породы, к которым только пристроили одну стену, и получился большой сарай. Монахи разводят там всякую живность для пропитания: кур, индюков, гусей. Там же расположены овощехранилища и другие подсобные помещения.

This is a detail shot of the top of the St. Pancras International train shed roof. I liked that there was a clear blue sky when I took this shot, as it afforded great contrast to the building when in monochrome.

St. Mary's is the church of the Council of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. The brick basilica serves as a model for the Gothic brick style of churches in the Baltic region. For the first time, the Gothic cathedral style of France was adapted to the local brick.

Numerous works of arts are to be found in St. Mary's interior: The Cross of Triumph by Gerhard Marcks in the high choir above the Swarte Altar from 1495 is as much at home here as the largest mechanical organ in the world. The well-known church musician and composer Dietrich Buxtehude was St. Mary's organist and work master from 1667 to 1707.

The commemorative chapel in the south tower with its church bells possesses a unique expressive power. The bells plunged to the stone floor during the 1942 air raids. The Gothic brick basilica has a medieval painting, the largest peel of bells in Schleswig-Holstein and a carillon with 36 bells from St. Catherine's Church in Danzig.

The two danse macabre windows take the motif and figures from the frieze of the Lübeck danse macabre burned in 1942.

Cet édifice religieux est situé à l'intérieur de l'enceinte médiévale et offre une spectaculaire façade de 23 mètres de longueur ornée du pur style saintongeais roman.

Alors que cette magnifique façade menaçait ruine, elle a été sauvée d'une destruction certaine grâce à l'intervention énergique de Prosper Mérimée en 1841. Elle est depuis lors classée monument historique au même titre que les différents bâtiments civils situés à l'intérieur de l'enceinte fortifiée du château de Surgères.
