Indigo Slam is a privately owned gallery and residence for an art collector in the heart of Sydney and it was conceived and built by
architects: Smart Design Studio Architect: William Smart
This is actually the rear of the building and it sits in a very narrow alleyway. When I was there photographing it yesterday there was still a lot of construction going on inside along with plastic sheeting covering the roof. I’d really love to see it’s interiors so I could understand how it’s exterior relates to the spaces within. I did art school at uni majoring in painting, drawing and photography… so I have a strong grasp on design like this. Conceptually the building has references to constructivism and abstraction, but I think a lot of the shapes and curves on the exteriors are clever ways to shape the light entering the building. One of the architects said that the light also changes from season to season in Indigo Slam which would be fascinating to see.

Evening settles slowly over the bluffs at The Sea Ranch Lodge, and the architecture begins to glow from within. The clustered forms, all weathered cedar and purposeful angles, sit in harmony with the natural landscape—those sloped rooflines echoing the contour of the coastline, the muted tones blending seamlessly with the tawny grasses that surround them. Light from the windows adds a warm pulse to the cool dusk, as if the buildings themselves are quietly breathing in the ocean air.
The winding path cuts through tall meadow grass, inviting you toward the Lodge with a softness that feels almost ceremonial. Nothing here is rushed. You get the sense that the designers intended this walk to be part of the experience—a gentle decompression as you leave the wild edge of the headlands and approach a place made for shelter, food, and reflection. Wind-shaped cypress trees frame the structures, exaggerating the drama of the horizon and giving the buildings context within the broader coastal ecosystem.
It’s architecture meant to listen as much as it speaks. The longer you look, the more the Lodge reveals itself as a companion to the land, responding to light, shadow, fog, and wind. This moment at dusk captures that relationship beautifully.

La Kozy Mansion-s pristine white jharokha-and-jaali facade. Mr. Baboolal Dalal, a cotton broker who commissioned skilled Rajasthani karigars to sculpt the building.

A long wooden bench stretches along a wall of weathered cedar at The Sea Ranch Lodge, softened by a neat row of pale linen pillows. The scene feels quiet and exacting — every surface aligned, every seam intentional. Here, design fades into calm precision, letting space itself do the talking.
The cedar boards have aged into a silvered patina, the kind only Pacific wind and salt can create. Light drifts across them in soft gradients, shifting with each passing cloud. The air carries a faint scent of ocean and wood oil. Even in black and white, you sense color — the pale grain, the sun-bleached cushions, the deep tone of the planks beneath your feet.
This moment captures The Sea Ranch philosophy distilled: shelter shaped by nature, restraint used as expression. The bench offers an invitation to pause, listen to wind in the cypress, and let the architecture dissolve into the landscape it was made for.

Morning sunlight spills over the cedar walls of The Sea Ranch Lodge, catching on the grain of weathered wood and the edges of Adirondack chairs. It’s a place that embodies quiet California modernism — architecture meant to fade into the landscape, not compete with it. The materials are humble, yet they hold the Pacific light in a way that feels sacred.
This deck, with its soft cushions and open sky, seems made for reflection: the pause before coffee, the exhale after a long drive up Highway 1. Here, time slows to match the rhythm of wind and waves.

Amazing what good design and engineering can accomplish. These bricks were custom made for the Phoenix Gallery in Chippendale Sydney by Krause Bricks.
The idea was initiated by a private patron whereby each element of the space was authored by a different hand. It has 3 main spaces; a gallery, a performance space and and a garden connecting it all together.
The Gallery architects are: John Wardle Architects
The performance space architects: Durbach Block Jaggers
Engineering: TTW Engineers
Brickwork by Krause Bricks
Garden spaces: 360 Degrees Landscape
I can’t wait to explore the various ways the spaces crossover and interact with my camera

1.991 – 2.003
