Daily App Experiment #312 "Jpizzle" - I bumped into @troy and Jpeg, his doggy, today and took some shots. I ran this shot through #phototropedelic and #percolator then layered all the versions together using #filterstorm's selective color tool and radial layering tools. #appsperiment #daily_appsperiment

Daily App Experiment 393: "Flashjack" - I've been playing around lately with different ways to work a real world camera flash into my iPhone photography. My favorite method so far has been using the flash in combination with a long exposure app to leave the shutter open, but get a crisp moment of clarity with the pop of the flash. This certainly isn't new to photographers, but I'm really surprised by the variety of results I get between different apps. My favorite so far is #lightbomb, a social sharing app for light painting fans. I set it to capture for three seconds then pop off a flash with a colored filter over the light. I've posted a bunch of cool examples on www.objectivescenes.com too. #appsperiment #daily_appsperiment

Daily App Experiment 404: "Ghosts On The Tarmacs" - Revisiting an older photo. Shot at SFO using HDR, which caused the ghosting image on the right. Then run through #decim8 and re-layered over the original using #imageblender. #appsperiment #daily_appsperiment

This started off as a picture taken with the TrueHDR camera app, which someone was cool enough to show me at last night's Instameet, but then I remembered I wanted to mess around with DotCamera some more. So I took the her pic, ran it through DotCamera once, then rotated the original (using Camera+) and ran it through again. Then I brought the original, horizontal, and vertical images together using the Juxtaposer app. The idea was to have a different effect for the foreground, the tagged wall, and the sky. To answer your question: yes it was a bit of work :)

playing around with ideas for a new series. Shot and edited with my iPhone.

Daily App Experiment #211: "All Trains" - Though the iPhone's camera app is my favorite app for taking shots, I rarely use it's built in HDR mode. Today I cane across a cool, if somewhat subtle, photo hack... When using Camera's HDR mode you'll actually get two shots, an original and an HDR composite. These shots can later be imported into your favorite HDR app (I use #TrueHDR) later. So basically you are HDR-ing an HDR image. The advantage of this is two fold: it's an easy way to quickly take shots for later HDR editing in other apps and the results seem pretty good. Not one of my weirder #daily_appsperiment projects, but I feel like I learned something from it. #appsperiment

Daily App Experiment #300 "767-300er" - My 300th #daily_appsperiment!

65 more days to go before my year long project is complete, or

whatever... Today's #appsperiment is one of my most heavily edited

pieces I've done yet. As such, I've decided to not write a how to,

rather I'm going to post a list of apps used. Camera+, #biglens,

#Noir, #trueHDR, #scratchcam, #decim8, #artistaoil, and #filterstorm.

I shot the #bathroomselfportrait on the flight yesterday, and spent an

hour OVEREDITING it until we landed in NYC. I try to keep my hacks

pretty simple, but today's experiment was all about seeing what

happens when I keep going and going.

- This week I'm posting a different #daily_appsperiment with the same source image of the moon that I shot on Friday night. Today's #appsperiment was created with the HalfTone app. They added some new settings that allows you control the size of the dots as well as their opacity.

Daily App Experiment #114: "Super Moon" - Last week I posted a series of #daily_appsperiment photos that all used the same source image and just one effect on top. It was a ton of fun but just using one app a day was driving me nuts... there are so many c

Daily App Experiment #27: "Tune Paint" self portrait in the studio that I filtered with IG's X-Pro II then opened with tunePAINT, which renders "drawings" of photos.

Desert landscape captured in Camera+ and enhanced with the Clarify filter. Color and contrast tweaked in Snapseed. Run through Decim8 several times to get a result with the "towers" on the left and another with the one on the right. Blended the two images with a bit of selective masking in Image Blender. I like the organic-ness and surreal-ness of the result!

Daily App Experiment 398: "The City" - ran this photo through #anticrop to "stretch" the photo for a better 4X3 crop, then pushed it through #instaCRT. Cropped that back to a square, then ran it through #osmoleaker two different times. Took those two versions and used #imageblender to layer them together. #appsperiment #daily_appsperiment

Daily App Experiment #299 "Carry Me" - had a great flight with plenty of time to experiment. I've been playing a lot lately with the idea of using stylistically different photos and assembling them as panoramas with #autostitch. For today's in-flight #appsperiment, I used every lens in my #hipstamatic bag to shot the same exact area over and ever again. Above is the result of 19 different lenses layered top of each other. #daily_appsperiment

Daily App Experiment #210: "Pop Art" - shot this originally with #Hipstamatic then brought it into Camera+ and opened the "I heart analog" filters. Rather than selecting a filter, I took a screenshot of the filter choices grid. I like combining apps, but I'm always stoked when an #appsperiment is so out of the ordinary that it requires a screenshot... It makes me feel so edgy;) #daily_appsperiment #bathroomselfportrait

A pine tree outside my office captured in Camera+ and applied Clarify. Created red, purple and green tinted versions with different filters in Camera+. Ran each tinted version through Decim8 three times. Used Autostitch to merge the 9 results together. Used Snapseed to play with the contrast and saturation. Used Dynamic Light's Orton filter to make a soft focus version and partially blended that back into the Snapseed version in Image Blender.

I think #appsperiment is one of the keenest hashtags on the Instagram right now. I love seeing what other folks are doing with in-app photo alterations. For this photo I took 4 screen shots of pictures tagged with #appsperiment, then ran 'em through #iDroste, and assembled them in #Diptic (making heavy use of the mirror and rotate options.

Daily App Experiment #276 "Prospecting" - Today's #appsperiment is really just a test to see what happens if I ran a bunch of "detail enhancing" apps together to see what would happen. Could I combine multiple enhancements and still get a normal looking photo? I took this shot with Camera+ then used the Clarity filter to boost the details. I saved a light and a dark version of this image, then opened each of these images in #orasis and let it do it's detail enhancement thing. I then took these two Orisis images and merged them in #trueHDR. So I enhanced in Camera+, Orasis, and then TrueHDR, all in the hopes of getting a version of my original image that had more details, but wasn't totally blown out. BTW, if you like Clarity, you might dig Orasis. #daily_appsperiment

Daily App Experiment #167 "Hype Street" - I shot this picture using the #SynthCam app, which has a real unique way of creating a narrow depth of focus look, then I ran the image through #DotCam for pixelation. Finally brought it into Camera+ and used the Clarity setting along with the Lofi filter (at about %25 opacity) to just the colors pop a little more. #daily_appsperiment #appsperiment

Daily App Experiment #168: "Orientation" - Last night I gave a talk at #dorkbotsf on iPhone photography and my #daily_appsperiment project. I created this piece right before the talk just I could go through all the steps clearly on this style of workflow. For today's #appsperiment I shot a pic of my friend @ekai using my @Photojojo fisheye lens. I then ran that pic through #Percolator and ran it again in #ToonPaint. I then used the Masking filter in #DXP to have the Percolated areas come through the black areas. For final touch up, I used Camera+'s Clarify feature.

BTW, I gave a talk on iPhone photography, using Keynote on iPad, then played a music set on my iPhone. No laptops where injured during my #dorkbot preso :)

Hey, I'm throwing a "Surprise Party" in SF this Thursday (3/10/11) from 7pm-10pm. The folks from Cathead BBQ will be catering (bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers and pork sliders!!!). The catch is... I won't announce the location publicly until an hour before the party starts (hence the "surprise")... hope to see some Instagram friends there!

Captured with Nightcap. Run through Clarity and Fashion filter in Camera+, then played with in Decim8 with the Veth and Precog1 filters. I have spent most of the afternoon playing with Decim8. It is a lot more fun than I was expecting it to be.

- A photo of Josh Ellingson, run through the #MosiacArtist app and #ToonPaint then layered together in #DXP using the screen filter.

Daily App Experiment #302 "Painted Lady" - This girl was making roses out of paper and glue at the East Bay Mini Maker Faire. I shot this pic with the regular camera app, then ran it through three different "painting" apps for different versions. I used #autopainter, #artistaoil & #artiststouch. I then used #juxtaposer to combine different parts of the different painted pics into one image. #appsperiment #daily_appsperiment

Daily App Experiment #139: "Everyday Day" - I've really been digging #Everyday, a photo app which helps you line up and take a similar photo (of your facehole or whatever) and then animate it like a stop motion movie. I've only got 30 photos so far, but I can't wait to see what the animation looks like after a year. Today I decided to take all my photos and do something weird with them. I tried Autostitching them all together, but that didn't work out... so then I layered all the photos in #DXP using the "Difference" filter. I actually got some neat results. Here is my favorite. #daily_appsperiment #appsperiment

Daily App Experiment 401: "Cycle" - created the painted bicycle layer by using the soon to be released #popsicolor app, then layered it over a photo of a wall using #imageblender. Ten spent a bit of time in #snapseed tweaking the composited image. #appsperiment #daily_appsperiment

A panorama shot of Ryoji Ikeda's installation The Transfinite at the Park Avenue Armory. I knew I couldn't capture the experience with single frame photos, so I tried some hdrs, which didn't work at all, and finally tried essentially bludgeoning my panorama stitchers into doing it for me. The chopped up results are marvelous.

The photos are massively dissimilar to most of the existing photos of the piece, since they are composited out of many discrete moments of the installation, rather than a moment in time. The installation is massive, and difficult to comprehend, a multisensory experience of audio, video, and architecture.

For more information about the installation, please visit www.armoryonpark.org/index.php/programs_events/detail/ryo...

Created with Interlacer. To make the glasses stand out, they were added to the photo list twice. The photos were in this order: Beer, shot, background, beer, shot.

Captured and edited with Pro Camera. Glitched out with Decim8.

Daily App Experiment #130 "Let me clarify" - Though it's not ideal for every photo, Camera+'s "Clarity" setting can really help bring the most out of an iPhone photo. For today's #appsperiment I wanted to see what would happen if I ran the same image through #clarity over and over again. I expected the image to be totally blown out, but each pass after the very first one ended up pretty subtle. If you hadn't tried running an image through Camera+ multiple times, u recommend it. You can get neat effects by layering borders or combining filters. #daily_appsperiment

Daily App Experiment #203 - "Sunset and Curls" - Inspired by a tutorial that @johncurley posted on the Objective Scenes blog yesterday, I set out to capture tonight's sunset using a long exposure technique with the #slowshutter app. I've had SlowShutter for many months, but hadn't taken any time to play with it until tonight. I used a 30 second exposure for this pic then, also sticking with John's advice, used #Cameramatic to play around with hues and filters. The orange circles in the center of the image came from tweaking some of the advanced settings in the "Filter Development" mode. I liked the effect, but thought it was a bit much, so I merged a subtler version with the "blazing sun" version using #TrueHDR. If you haven't seen the guest posts that John has been doing, you really should check out www.ObjectiveScenes.com this week. Lots of great articles and images. #appsperiment #daily_appsperiment

Alternate version of my earlier #appsperiment. For this version, I tried using #Symmetry on the photo first, then doing #Percolator second. It's interesting to note that even though the image is perfectly mirrored, there are subtle differences between what Percolator did to the top half, versus what it did to the bottom.

Daily App Experiment #209: "Improved Cocktail" - hung out with some friends at Dalva bar tonight. While watching the bartender mix our cocktails I decided to shoot with the #MagicShutter app because I could get some cool shots in low light. Got this shot while he opened the mini-fridge then post-processed it with Camera+. #appsperiment #daily_appseriment

Grind: Extra Fine (Smallest Circles & Effect: Sharpen), Brew: Color Gels (Full Pic & 1/4 Blended Circles), Serve: Black (Clear Tone & Smooth Texture)

Daily App Experiment #199: "Tread Lightly" - Shot this photo with #TrueHDR, then ran it through #photowizard's "Game Boy" filter. I then took that image and merged it the original image using TrueHDR again. #appsperiment #daily_appsperiment

Daily App Experiment #373 "It's the only way to live" - shot from the top of a nearby building, then I used #frontview to make it appear as if I was shooting directly down (the building was actually to the side). I then ran the image through #anticrop (twice) to make the cars keep repeating. #appsperiment #daily_appseriment

Apps: BlockArt (to create the space invader), Snapseed (drama effect), Blender, Picfx, Pictureshow (scanlines)

Daily App Experiment #152: "Mind the tracks" - Today's #appsperiment was shot with the #Luminancer camera app. Luminancer is a camera that creates different effects based on motion of objects in the camera. So as the train was slowly rolling into Millbrae, the app captured a trail into the photo. It has a lot of built in settings for strobe/delay/colors/etc, but it also has some cool filters that can be applied after the image is finished. It's a very cool app to play around with! #daily_appsperiment Thanks to @crashfaster for the app tip.
