The drop is approximately 50 meters (164 feet), and considering that most of the surrounding land is relatively flat, seems completely out of place.

Besos thermal plant: La Catalana
Besos thermal plant, popularly known as thermal chimneys of the three was a conventional thermoelectric cycle facility located at the mouth of the River Besos in the Mediterranean Sea, between the municipalities of San Adrian de Besos and Badalona, in the Barcelona (Spain). It consisted of three thermal units of 350 MW each. It was built by Copisa between 1970 and 1976 and its facilities are owned by the company Fecsa-Endesa. It ceased its activity in 2011.
Besos thermal stood alongside other facilities occupied old power station conventional cycle, built in 1967 and whose demolition was completed in 2007.
In its initial design, fireplaces (90 m) were located immediately above the boiler (90 m), which reached a total approximate altitude of 180 meters. After several climate studies that placed the inversion layer around 170-190 m in the area of Barcelona, were due fireplace add 20 meters to overcome this climate problem, finally reaching 200 m. Hence, the last 20 meters differ from the rest by its metal construction. This very distinctive appearance makes them visible from a distance, part and the skyline of San Adrian and Badalona.
The company that owns the facility, Fecsa-Endesa, agreed with the institutions the transfer of the plant, and in March 2008 he was granted permission for the installation of a new combined cycle plant. This V Group, of 859 MW, gradually replaced the power plant San Adrian de Besós.6 The new combined cycle plant consists of two groups totaling 859 MW, fueled with natural gas and in special circumstances with fuel oil. 7

These renovations brought the closure of the old plant from 2010, and the possibility of demolition of the three flagship fireplaces. The municipality of San Adrián in November 2008 called for a referendum among residents about the possibility of maintaining the building and transform it into a social center, and 82.2% of the population voted in favor of the project.
In March 2011 it ceased trading, and Endesa began its dismantling, without having been finalized any plans about their future. However, residents formed a platform of defense of the building, calling for a plan of use to ensure their livelihoods.

Taken from a light plane overflying the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, this view shows the canyons and ridges just east of the South Kataib Trail (which runs along the spine of the ridge partially seen at the extreme right of shot).
There was about 30cm of snow on the ground at the head of the Bright Angel Trail and as seen here, it descended quite a way into the Canyon, picking out the various rock layers in spectacular fashion.
For those of you who are interested, the height difference between the valley junction just above the date and the top of the canyon rim above it (the green forest at the upper right) is approximately 700m, according to some rough work in GoogleEarth.

Located approximately 27 kilometers (about 16 miles) southeast of Longsheng County, a vast region of rice terraces stretches layer upon layer, coiling around from the base of Longji (the dragon's backbone) Mountain to its summit. This is the most amazing terrace in China, the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces. Construction of them began in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and continued until the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) when construction was completed. The Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces are the culmination of both the profound wisdom and strenuous labor of the Zhuang people.
Now, the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces covers an area of 66 square kilometers (about 16308 acres) and spans an altitude between 300 meters (about 984 feet) and 1100 meters (about 3608 feet). It is said, 'Where there is soil, there is a terrace', be it in the valley, with swift flowing river to the mountains summit with its swirling cloud cover, or from bordering verdant forest to the cliff walls. Even though the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces is large, it is made up of numerous patches no more than 1 mu (it is a traditional unit of area in China, currently call shimu) (about 0.16 acres). The smaller ones like snails while the bigger one like towers. The outline is very smooth with gradients between 26 degrees and 35 degrees.
