detail of Cabinet ✴ Pierre Gole ✴ France, circa 1650
California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco
'Elaborate ebony cabinets on matching stands were made for the French court in the XVIIth century as impressive symbols of power and taste. Ebony, which was imported from India, was considered rare exotic and precious and was used for the most prestigious pieces of furniture. The cabinet was carved with scenes from the Old Testament that were designed to reflect the notion off good government as practiced by the Kings of Israel. When the 2 main doors are open, a theatrical tableau is revealed in which gilt-bronze characters enact the judgment of Solomon, the ultimate story of royal wisdom. The interior of the cabinet contains more than 30 drawers, some of which are concealed behind decorative panels'

Aachener Dom - Bronze wolf (bear). There is a legend that tells about the emergence of the Dom of Aachen. When the Dom was built, the money was up at a given moment. Satan wanted to help, but he wanted the first soul that entered the church. He expected, of course, that the bishop would be the first to enter the church, but the people were not completely crazy and sent a wolf forward.
When Satan noticed the deception, he became furious. Crying and running he came out of the church. He slammed the door so hard that he lost his thumb. The thumb can still be felt today in a hole of the ornament of the right lion on the bronze front doors. Satan came back for revenge with a few sacks of sand. However, he missed the church. This also explains why the environment is so hilly, according to the legend. - Aachen/DE
