Paradigm Shift ... A major change in how some process is accomplished . It can certainly happen when a new piece of technology radically alters the way of doing something and, as a consequence, results in a better product.
That certainly is applicable to photography. Shooting wildlife ... especially small birds ... had lost much of its charm for me. Unable to get the detail I wanted in certain shots was quite often disappointing and resulted in a general lack of interest. But a new piece of technology is perhaps about to change all that.
This shot, and the other two I uploaded ( I don't usually do that) were taken hand held from a distance of at least twenty five feet ... from a parked vehicle, across a logging road, shooting up into a tree. Frankly, considering all that, the amount of feather detail amazed me. This same day I went on to shoot even smaller birds which were closer to me than this and the results were even better. I think I can truly say that my interest has been rekindled.
My old Sigma 150-500mm was good ... still is. No question about it! Actually, I managed to take a pretty good shot of Saturn with it a few nights ago ( with a 2x teleconverter attached). But it certainly seems as if the Sigma Sport 150- 600 is much, much better.

Pulicat lake bird sanctuary is a saline backwater lake lying along the T.N.-A.P coast; part extending to Chengalpattu district of T.N. It has an area of 481 sq.KM and it is the 2nd largest brackish water lagoon in India after Chilka lake in Orissa. The area on the TN side is 153.67 sq.km.
The Pulicat sanctuary is drained by Arni river while the Buckingham canal brings in the city’s drainage water. At the southern end is an opening on to Bay of Bengal through a shallow mouth of 200 m in width. The rest of the lake is closed by a sand bar running parallel to the Bay of Bengal in the form of the Sriharikota island.
The sanctuary has an area of 321 Sq. KM with 108 sq.KM of National Park area.
It lies within 11o 30’ N to 11o 42’ N and 76o 30’ E to 76o 45’ E.
Rainfall ranges from 800 - 2000mm. Temperature varies from 14o C to 33o C.
Altitude ranges from 100’ MSL to 1200’ MSL.
The wetlands eco system are considered as among the richest areas of bio diversity. Pulicat, by virtue of the mixing of fresh water with sea water is found to be an ideal habitat for diverse life-forms. 160 species of fish, 25 species of polychaete worms, 12 species of prawn, 19 species of mollusk and 100 speceis of birds are well documented apart from a number of other aquatic flora and fauna.
Among the most spectacular is the flamingo-a tall gaunt, white-coloured bird with a touch of pink on the wings, pink beak and legs, seen feeding in shallow water. The squat, large-billed grey pelican with gular pouch and a number of ducks are commonly seen. Flocks of sea gulls and terns circling in the sky or bobbing up and down on the water are an added attraction at pulicat. Besides, there are a number of waterside birds and waders such as curlews, stilts, plovers, sand pipers, lapwings, redshank. Egrets, herons, kites etc. are some other birds found here. The lake is also home to crabs, clams, mussels, oysters, snails, fish worms, insects, spiders, sponges, anemone, prawns, plankton and so on including rare endemic species like gilled leech, an unidentified bloodred fish, etc., Rapid siltation has caused loss of bio diversity. It is seen that mangrove opllen is found on Sriharikota Island indicating their existence some years back. Loss of mangroves may be one of the resons hastening siltation, reducing biodiversity and hence depriving fisherfolk of their livelihood.

Jal Mahal (meaning "Water Palace") is a palace located in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur city, the capital of the state of Rajasthan, India. The palace and the lake around it were renovated and enlarged in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber.
The Jal Mahal palace has got an eye-popping makeover. Traditional boat-makers from Vrindavan have crafted the Rajput style wooden boats. A gentle splashing of oars on the clear lake waters takes you to Jal Mahal. You move past decorated hallways and chambers on the first floor to climb all the way up to the fragrant Chameli Bagh. Across the lake, you can view the Aravalli hills, dotted with temples and ancient forts, and on the other side, bustling Jaipur. The most remarkable change is in the lake itself. The drains were diverted, two million tonnes of toxic silt were dredged from the bottom, increasing its depth by over a metre, a water treatment system was developed, local vegetation and fish reintroduced, the surrounding wetlands regenerated and five nesting islands created to attract migratory birds.
The lake, situated to the north of Jaipur city lies between Amer, the historic city and Jaipur, the provincial headquarters of Rajastan state. It has a water spread area of 300 acres (121 ha) and is enclosed by the Aravalli hills on the north, west and eastern sides, while the southern side consists of plains that are intensely inhabited. There is the Nahargarh Fort (Nahargarh meaning home of tigers) in the hills that provides a commanding view of the Man Sagar Lake and the Jal Mahal palace, in addition to a beautiful view of the city of Jaipur. The lake was created by constructing a dam across the Darbhawati River, between Khilagarh hills and the hilly areas of Nahargarh, in the 16th century. The drainage area of the lake is 23.5 square kilometres (9.1 sq mi)contributed by an urban area accounting for 50% and hilly terrain accounting for the balance, being degraded Aravalli hills, which have added to the siltation problem in the lake. A rain fall average of 657.4 millimetres (25.88 in) per year (90% of this rainfall occurs during the months of June to September) in the catchment contributes to the storage in the reservoir. At the outlet end of the dam there is an irrigation system that is supplied with water stored in the reservoir (obligatory water demand for this is reported to be 2,410,000 cubic metres during the five months from November to March). Two large nalas (streams) that also drain the surrounding Nahargarh hills and Jaipur are the Brahmpuri and Nagtalai, which bring in large amounts of untreated sewage, in addition to solid wastes.

These are all the dolls that I have fully re-rooted. I've pictured all my partial re-roots separately. I've tried to arrange these ladies (and Ken) in the rough order I re-rooted their hair, but I had to guess with most of them, and I also had to sit the shorter dolls in the front. For each doll, I have included what hair type and color I used, as well as where I purchased the hair (if applicable). I don't have any before/after pictures of these dollies, which is why I chose to take two group photographs of them all. I'm definitely not a professional re-rooter by any means, but I'm very glad I was able to to give a new life to some of my favorite dolls, as well as those I adopted who were in great need. My philosophy with re-rooting is basically trying to save as many dolls in the most cost effective, thrifty way possible. This means that sometimes I use "donor hair" from dolls that couldn't be saved for various reasons, or I buy hair online that is versatile that I can use on many different dollies. My intent isn't to recreate the dolls' factory hair styles, but rather to simply give them hair with whatever I have. I have so many dolls in this photo, that I can't explain here why I re-rooted each one, but if you are interested in the backstory, please feel free to check out their individual photographs in my corresponding albums.

These are all the dolls that I have partially re-rooted. I've pictured all my full re-roots separately. For each doll, I have included what hair type and color I used, as well as where I purchased the hair (if applicable). As I explain on my full re-roots photo, I try to be as thrifty as possible when re-rooting dolls. This means that I partially re-root dolls whenever I can. These dolls all had terrible bald spots, or were missing chunks of hair due to hair cuts. Most of what you can see in this photo is each doll's factory locks, blended with hair I put in. In some cases, I only needed to replace a few hair plugs, but other times, I re-rooted about half the head. Since I didn't always have a decent color match for some of these ladies, I often times used what I already had, and just gave the doll highlights or a peekaboo of color. For some of these ladies, I got really creative. For instance, my Cool Times Barbie pictured here was very balded on the left side of her head. Since the rest of her hair was in great condition, I didn't want to remove it. I also didn't want to purchase kanekalon hair to add to her head, since I am not a huge fan of kanekalon hair. I decided to give my Dance Magic Barbie a full re-root with saran hair, and save what was left of her kanekalon factory hair for Cool Times Barbie! The hair color matched perfectly, and both dolls look so much better!

Sandhi Puja -
An integral and important part of Durga Puja, Sandhi Puja is performed at the juncture of the 8th and 9th lunar day. Sandhi puja lasts from the last 24 minutes of Ashtami till the first 24 minutes of Nabami. During this juncture (the "Sandhikhan"), Durga is worshipped in her Chamunda form. Devi Durga killed, Chando and Mundo, the two asuras at "Sandhikhan" and thus acquired the name of "Chamunda".
Myth behind Durga being worshipped as Chamunda -
While the Goddess and Mahishasura were engaged in a fierce battle, the two generals of Mahisha, Chando and Mundo attacked the Devi from the the rear. Durga appeared to them, a brilliantly glowing woman with her hair knotted on her head, a crescent moon above her forehead, a 'tilak' on her forehead and a garland around her neck. With golden earrings and clad in a yellow saari she emitted a golden glow. Her ten hands possessed ten different weapons. Though she appeared beautiful her face turned blue with anger when she faced Chondo and Mundo. From her third eye then emerged a Devi with a large falchion and a shield. She had a large face, bloody tongue and sunken blood shot eyes. She was Chamunda. With a bloodcurdling shriek she leapt forward and killed them. This moment was the juncture of the 8th and 9th lunar day.
Age old yardsticks for measuring the "Sandhikhan" -
Long back devotees in order to perform the Sandhi Puja at the exact juncture used a number of methods. With the last 24 mins. of the Ashtami puja still left, a bronze bowl with a tiny hole was placed in a bucket full of water. The bowl with the tiny hole was made in such a way that it took exactly 24 minutes for the bowl to submerge in the water. The moment the bowl submerged in the water cannon balls were
fired announcing this moment of Sandhi Puja. This yardstick for measuring the "Sandhikhan" was very popular ages ago in many "Rajbaris". Many "Rajbaris", including, the zamindar of Sutanuti of Sobhabajar Rajbari fired cannon balls to announce the "Sandhikhan". People around Sobhabajar waited for this indication to proceed with their puja. King of Krishnanagar, Raja Krishna Chandra, was given the
cannon of Plassey as a gift from Robert Clive. In Shikharbhum Rajbari a platter with vermillion (sindur) used to be kept in front of the Devi. It is said the foot prints of the Devi could be seen in the platter. This moment indicated the commencement of Sandhi Puja. Sabarno Raychoudhury of Barisha worshipped the Chamunda Devi by burning 'Layta' and 'Pholui' (types of fishes) fishes.
Things needed to perform Sandhi Puja -
Sandhi Puja requires 108 lotus flowers, a single fruit, dry rice grain for "noibiddo", 108 earthen lamps, clothes, jewelry, hibiscus garlands and wood apple (bel) leaves. The almost non existent rituals which underwent changes with the changes in the society can still be seen in some of the 200-250 year old Pujas.

Varanasi (वाराणसी) (Hindustani pronunciation: [ʋaːˈraːɳəsi] ( listen)), also known as بنارس, Benares, Banaras (Banāras [bəˈnaːrəs] ( listen)) or Kashi (Kāśī [ˈkaːʃi] ( listen)), is an Indian city on the banks of the Ganga in Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres (200 mi) south-east of the state capital, Lucknow. It is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism, and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Some Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Varanasi is also known as the favourite city of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva as it has been mentioned in the Rigveda that this city in older times was known as Kashi or "Shiv ki Nagri".
The Kashi Naresh (Maharaja of Kashi) is the chief cultural patron of Varanasi, and an essential part of all religious celebrations. The culture of Varanasi is closely associated with the Ganges. The city has been a cultural centre of North India for several thousand years, and has a history that is older than most of the major world religions. The Benares Gharana form of Hindustani classical music was developed in Varanasi, and many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians live or have lived in Varanasi. Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, located near Varanasi.
Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India. It is often referred to as "the holy city of India", "the religious capital of India", "the city of Shiva", and "the city of learning". Scholarly books have been written in the city, including the Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas. Today, there is a temple of his namesake in the city, the Tulsi Manas Mandir. The current temples and religious institutions in the city are dated to the 18th century. One of the largest residential universities of Asia, the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), is located here.

When it comes to family holidays, my wife has an uncanny knack of deciding just where it is we end up. Exactly how is it she always manages this? No sooner have I even given the matter some thought than air tickets are booked, the hotel/cottage/apartment (delete as applicable or add a random variable) are reserved, suitcases are packed and an unwilling volunteer has been given the onerous task of caring for our four cats.
So it was then with our jaunt back in early October to the Languedoc region of southern France. I don't really mind of course, because as far as I'm concerned any part of the world offers fresh and potentially exciting photographic opportunities that I may never see again. Frustrating then, that while the family lapped up the first four days of 100% blue sunny sky following our arrival, my camera stayed sulking in it's bag like a petulant child! However, come the fifth day and promising banks of cloud began to etch themselves slowly across the sky. Practically skipping with joy, knowing by then I'd earnt enough to warrant an escape into the great unknown, my beloved and I (My wife? No - she stayed by the pool with the others, why do you ask?) headed off alone in search of vistas wild and untamed...
Now the problem with being in a strange area is not knowing your way around particularly well. I had perhaps at best three or four hours with which to find something worth shooting, and as my father-in-law was the sole named driver of our rental car, only a very limited radius with which to succeed on foot. So it was that I covered rather more ground than I thought possible, traipsing through mile after mile of vineyards and villages. Every turn was a dilemma (just what was around those corners I dismissed?) and the glare from the mediterranean sun - still strong even in October - was threatening to bleach all detail from what landscape was on offer. I saw a great deal that afternoon, and even though much of what I discovered ultimately wouldn't lend itself to being captured well, it was great to be out. I couldn't help noticing, and not for the first time, that it's not just cultures and customs that are different in a foreign land - it's the factors affecting photography too. Light, cloud, air clarity - the typicalities of many things that I'm used to at home and take for granted seem skewed when abroad.
This was one of a very few images I took that day, and this is maybe my third attempt since to process it. In some ways it's a little different from much of my work, as perhaps befits my unfamiliar surroundings. I'm glad though - as I mentioned, I may never see this again...

'This picture was captured at the end of a long day of shooting. It had been a good day, but not great. As the sun dropped below the horizon, beautiful colours began appearing over the stark landscape. A small, but intense storm developed and began producing C.G. (cloud-to-ground) lightning. I jumped out of the vehicle and set up my tripod near an old wooden fence. Leaning over it I focused across the barren field and hoped for a bolt or two. Two my delight, that’s exactly what nature provided. The contrast and combination of blue, magenta and green yielded the shot of the day. It’s important to be patient. The best shot may come in the final hour of a long day. Never give up!' - Jim Reed

The Chamera Dam impounds the River Ravi and supports the hydroelectricity project in the region. It is located near the town of Dalhousie, in the Chamba district in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India The reservoir of the dam is the Chamera Lake.
After completion of the first phase, the Chamera-I generates 540 MW (3x180 MW) of electricity. The second stage i.e. Chamera-II Dam generates 300 MW (3X100 MW) of electricity. From year 2012, the 3rd stage i.e. Chamera III generates 231 MW (3x77) of electricity.
The unique feature of the region is the fluctuating day and night temperature. The temperature during the day near the dam rises up to 35 degrees Celsius and drops to a minimum of 18 to 20 °C at night.
The water level in the Chamera Lake rises to a maximum of 763 meters while the minimum water level is 747 meters.
The absence of aquatic life in the lake has made it an ideal location for water sports. According to the plan developed by the tourism department, the lake shares the scope of sports activities like rowing, motor boating, paddle boating, sailing, canoeing, angling and kayaking. House boats and shikaras are also available. The government attempts to provide all these facilities to the tourists.

Khajjiar (Hindi: खज्जियार) is a hill station in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, India, located approximately 24 km from Dalhousie.
Khajjiar sits on a small plateau with a small stream-fed lake in the middle that has been covered over with weeds. The hill station is surrounded by green meadows and dense forests. It is about 6,500 feet (2,000 m) above sea level in the foothills of the Dhauladhar ranges of the Western Himalayas and snowy peaks can be seen in the distance. It is part of the Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary.
Khajjiar can be reached from Dalhousie, the nearest major town and hill station, by bus in an hour or so. It has a rare combination of three ecosystems: lake, pasture and forest, all in one place.
On 7 July 1992, Mr. Willy T. Blazer, Vice Counselor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland in India brought Khajjiar on the world tourism map by christening it "Mini Switzerland". He also put a sign board of a yellow Swiss hiking footpath showing Khajjiar's distance from the Swiss capital Berne-6194 km. Khajjiar is among the 160 locations in the world that bear topographical resemblance with Switzerland. The counselor also took from Khajjiar a stone which will form part of a stone collage around the Swiss Parliament to remind the visitors of Khajjiar as a Mini Switzerland of India.

Pinus wallichiana is a coniferous evergreen tree native to the Himalaya, Karakoram and Hindu Kush mountains, from eastern Afghanistan east across northern Pakistan and India to Yunnan in southwest China. It grows in mountain valleys at altitudes of 1800–4300 m (rarely as low as 1200 m), between 30 m and 50 m in height. It favours a temperate climate with dry winters and wet summers.
This tree is often known as 'Bhutan pine', (not to be confused with the recently described Bhutan white pine, Pinus bhutanica, a closely related species). Other names include 'blue pine', 'Himalayan white pine' and 'Himalayan blue pine'. In the past, it was also known by the invalid botanic names Pinus griffithii McClelland or "Pinus excelsa" Wall., Pinus chylla Lodd. when the tree became available through the European nursery trade in 1836, nine years after Dr Wallich first introduced seeds to England.
The leaves ("needles") are in fascicles (bundles) of five and are 12–18 cm long. They are noted for being flexible along their length, and often droop gracefully. The cones are long and slender, 16–32 cm, yellow-buff when mature, with thin scales; the seeds are 5–6 mm long with a 20–30 mm wing.
The wood is moderately hard, durable and highly resinous. It is a good firewood but gives off a pungent resinous smoke. It is a commercial source of turpentine which is superior quality than that of P. roxburghii but is not produced so freely.
It is also a popular tree for planting in parks and large gardens, grown for its attractive foliage and large, decorative cones. It is also valued for its relatively high resistance to air pollution, tolerating this better than some other conifers.
This plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Typical habitats are mountain screes and glacier forelands, but it will also form old growth forests as the primary species or in mixed forests with deodar, birch, spruce, and fir. In some places it reaches the tree line.
