M15 has an apparent visual magnitude of 6.2, which places it at the edge of naked-eye visibility in very dark skies. With binoculars, it appears as a faint, fuzzy patch, while a telescope reveals its densely packed stars. It lies at a distance of about 33,600 light-years from Earth and spans approximately 175 light-years across. This cluster contains over 100,000 stars, including several notable variable stars, and is famous for its exceptionally dense core, which may harbor a rare type of black hole.

{ Do have a look the piece of History Ive written on this as its interesting I think, and it will hopefully make you smile! }
These are some of the words to the song, "Rat Trap" by Bob Geldof and the Boomtown Rats which was a big international hit for them in November 1978.

" The Story of The Five Lamps "
The 5 Lamps are a well known Dublin landmark and stand on an island at the junction of 5 streets. It is much loved and respected by the local people who are part of a closely knit community and can trace back their history here to the 1600s.
The monument was erected to the memory of Lieutenant
General Henry Hall,a soldier from Athenry, Co. Galway at a cost of £200 which he bequeathed in his will, so the people of the area would have fresh water to drink from the [4] fountains and "desist from partaking of the demon drink!!" I dont think it worked somehow and they didnt even add it to their whiskey! Anyway, what respectable whiskey drinker would ruin a good drink like that and they couldnt have afforded it anyway. More likely Poteen was the common drink around here. If Henry came back today,Im sure he would be delighted to see that "The Five Lamps" pub across the road is now closed!
Henry also had a little pad in Dublin which is still standing and known as "Merville Hall!" You could fit half the population of Dublin into Henry`s little place and with a few dozen sepoys with there back to the task, you would probably get the entire lot in! "What what I say!! Steady lads!, Good show you fellows!!!" { Shades of "Zulu"! } I dont know if he really said that of course but somehow I think he would. I cant imagine that he was an Irish native somehow. Not with his position in the British army at that time, or his apparent wealth.
He had served in the Bengal army and had been Superintendent of the Malwara region for 13 years so he had a few quid!
He died in 1875 and by all account was a "jolly good sort"
and he did have the peoples good at heart as there was no proper water supply and people existed in appalling conditions in tenement slums. Some of the renovated ones can be seen in the photo.
The independent MP, Tony Gregory fought all his life to have the old places knocked down and new town houses build so the local people could remain in the area and not be moved to some " no mans land" in west Dublin which had happened to so many. He was very successful and he achieved an awful lot and the community have stayed together. Poor people who lived in these appalling conditions, were always very loyal to each other and they all helped one another. They always looked after their neighbours The community spirit is still evident there thankfully! Wealth brings out the worst traits in lots of people Im afraid.
There is a lovely Dublin saying from around this period. Mothers in the tenaments would call their children in from the streets at dinner hour by calling out through the window " Will ya come in kids! Yer dinners poured out" Dinner being a bowl of gruel or maybe on special occasions, soup!!!
What is the significance of the 5 lamps? It may be to represent the junction of the 5 streets, or the 5 major battles in the Indian wars or perhaps the 5 lamps that are lit for good luck during the Hindu Diwali Festival. No one really knows and more than likely its probably just a nice design.
The photo is a 3 picture HDR merge in PSP x8 and further edited in Picasa 3. I do like the ghost images of the passers by.
Anyway, if you fancy a few drinks I could meet you at the 5 lamps but watch out for the ghost of old Henry, keeping watch!
Thanks for dropping by. I appreciate your Faves and comments and Ill catch you all later!

This little guy is pretty apparent in this picture but was not easily visible without slogging through the snow and tight trees to get an angle on him or her. She can just barely see me out her left eye.
This is a small owl well hidden by the leaves and matching with the texture of the beech tree. Amazing that someone saw him at all.

It has become apparent that my days of hiking even the most level trail on Mt. Diablo are over. My days of six mile walks are also done. I'm happy that I have sufficient photos of my halcyon days to post on Flickr for some years to come.
Yesterday, I walked two miles which is just enough distance to take me to two nature reserves and many gardens. In one patch of HF Reserve, I found five new flowers, and I could stand long enough to shoot three butterflies on Lantana which can me a lot to keep me busy for a few hours in the afternon. I took 172 photos, and ended up keeping four. This Caryopteris mongholic which luckily has one common name, the Dark Knight (go figure), is a genus of flowering plants in the family Lamiaceae. They are native to east Asia (China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia) which means that this is probably a cultivar, but since it's growing "wild," was and used to be considered a Verbena, I'll consider it for Wildlife of the West.
Verbena, by the way, is widely known in North America and England, and I've found four Verbenas in my archives.

With an apparent size 1/3 that of other more popular galaxies positioned well in the current southern galaxy season, like NGC 1097 and NGC 1365 and less than 1/10 the size of the perennial favourites up at the moment, like NGC 253 and NGC 55 et al, NGC 1350 in Fornax is a little more challenging to get a good image of...and needs some decent conditions to reveal some of the fine structures in its ring like arms
It's a lovely subtle galaxy, nearly 90 Million light years away, hence it's modest size of 6' X 3' and it shows very little obvious star forming going on, hence the lack of any significant pink HII regions.

I was shooting some video of our spiny orbweaver at work on a new web when I thought I felt a fly on my shin. Looking down I could see it wasn't a fly, but I wasn't sure what it was. When I bent down for a look it hopped over to a nearby leaf. As I got closer it became apparent that it was a little jumper, and she sat briefly for a portrait.
This is one of the things I love about macro photography - you head out into the garden, or the woods, or the fields, and you never know what nature's going to show you...
As the days went on the invasion of the foreigners became more and more apparent.
Kai and Kaze decided to walk the streets to attempt to protect the locals from the wrath and greed that the foreigners were raining down on those less fortunate daily.
As they exited the shop they found exactly what they were looking for. Demon Dodge, Evil Emil and Fleetin' Ethan were all three ready for them.
Quickly they nodded to one another and Kaze took off at a run. He leapt into the air as he was trained to do, his legs taking on the crane formation. His face was determined, angry even. With his youth it was normal for him to be a hothead, but in times like this it wasn't a bad thing. His anger would fuel him.
Kai on the other hand took a protective stance, his eyes hard, cold and calculating. He'd get the two that were left, his sword sliced the air with a speed that was unmatched by his opponents.
Demon Dodge's eyes blazed with determination, his blades at the ready in a stance that was typical to those that were not of this place.
Evil Emil, known to be the most twisted of them, had a look on his face of sheer glee at the blood fray that was about to ensue. It was known that he took delight in others pain and even their deaths.
All that Kai could think is, "they do not belong" as he struck out finally at his enemy. HIs heritage, his training, his composure was second to none of his age, his eyes shone black in the night, colorless during the day. Only this time, they were cold as a black ice running down your spine.
The battle would begin, but where would it end?
L’eau, encore l’eau…toujours l’eau !
Throughout our beloved Flickr Community, it is quite evident and apparent that 'raptors' are the main bird of choice, particularly bald eagles and hawks in-flight. But for me, in South Florida, it is the Great Blue Heron. I will never get tired of seeing them; fly, walk, stroll, strut, fish, hunt, love, talk, and care for their young in the nest. They are not raptors, but their beauty, demeanor, elegance, long bills and five-foot wingspans in-flight are always impressive to see.

Cloud classification
This cloud is classified as ‘cumulonimbus praecipitatio (Cb pra)’. Read more info about cumulonimbus clouds here: whatsthiscloud.com/cloud-types/cumulonimbus/
Cloud description
Cumulonimbus is the main cloud type. Derived from the latin term 'cumulo-' (meaning heap) and 'nimbo-' (meaning rain), cumulonimbus clouds can be best described as a dark-based storm cloud capable of impressive vertical growth.
The cloud feature 'praecipitatio' is translated from latin, meaning fall, and can be described as a cloud with rain that reaches the surface.

Despite the apparent crenellations, Doyden Castle, built around 1830, is not really a castle as such, rather, a one bedroom holiday home nestled snugly on the cliff-top at Port Quin headland in Cornwall.
I imagine that it would be quite exciting spending time there in the teeth of a storm, but even in the off-season it’s a tad on the expensive side for the minimum three night stay. The cost doesn’t seem to deter people though, as you’ll have to book a year in advance if you fancy being King/Queen of the Castle.

There is no apparent entry to this enclosure. In 1952 a major excavation took place it revealed the three cairns that stand here were built at the same time. It is assumed they were burial cairns although no remains were found,
Quarrying techniques apparent at the Mons Claudianus. In the unit in the right middle ground are a series of slots cut in order to receive wooden wedges, which would be saturated with water to expand and split the stone. The masons were simultaneously cutting below to separate the unit from the bedrock. This was likely intended to become a column shaft, but the work was abandoned after the discovery of some defect in the stone.

There are a few things going on this image which may not be immediately apparent to the viewer, but having been so intimately involved in the process of creating this photograph, I have some insight on to share. If you are a regular follower of my feed, you'll likely know I do a lot of long exposure work. As in, super long. Typically I work with at least a 9 stop ND filter but often combine it with a second or go to a standalone 15 stop ND. Over the years, and thousands of photos, I have learned that film responds in some unusual ways when such strong ND filters get combined. Color film is not terribly IR sensitive, so the fact that my filters don't have IR-blocking coatings on them seems less like the issue. My working theory is that these filters pass more UV light than visible light and color film does have sensitivity that dips into the UV end of the spectrum. So in a sense I am getting some degree of UV over-exposure. The non-technical way of describing this is that my super long exposure color photography can get some funky colors to it. At first I worked to correct this back to "normal", with "normal" of course merely being the subjective benchmark I applied based on how my eyes and brain saw the world. Over time though I became less interested in normal. Part of that is because I don't need the photos to show me normal. I can see that with my own eyes. Rather, I enjoy seeing the alternative perspectives. What does the world look like if one can see a bit farther into UV, for example. The second thing going on is I am using a new color film put out by Silberra. I have not shot much of this film, so its behaviors and qualities is still unexplored ground for me. And I do like my unexplored ground. And lastly, I am always a bit fascinated at our own brain's ability to adapt to changing color temperatures and filter them back to what we call normal. This image was made late into sunset, and while the clouds were getting painted with some nice light, the beach itself had descended into a deep blue dusk. I couldn't see this blue of course because of the aforementioned workings of my brain. In fact, the beach looked more like it does in this photo, with a neutral sandy color, but reference photos made on my phone with the white balance set to daylight showed me the blue.
That is the backdrop for this photo. Once scanned I started doing some light processing to it, mostly cleaning up dust marks or the occasional film scratch. I balanced the exposure across the scene a bit but largely didn't touch the color too much other than some global corrections. And this image is the result. The colors that came out are a bit surreal. It is a subtle surrealism for sure, no crazy juxtapositions going on here, but one I enjoy.

And so my apparent obsession with pastel coloured beach huts continues...!
These band new, and as of yet un-occupied huts at Broadsands in Torbay, replace a rather quaint collection of multi coloured huts that have now been dumped in the near by car park.
I'm not sure of what fate awaits the old guard, but it doesn't look hopeful.

The first unearthed geosimian evoked a "whoa!" from geologists and anthropologists alike and got them scratching their noggins. They didn't at all know what to make of the thing. Replacement fossil of a shrunken ancestor? A rock that just looked like a higher primate? A carved effigy? If so, carved by who?
Then, the things started turning up everywhere. People began finding them in fieldstone walls, in cliffs, among river gravel. They were in ocean jetties, the monuments to our war dead, Indian mounds.
Of course, the more spiritually inclined either saw god at work or the devil at play. The stones were said to be revealed, revered and reviled, usually in that order.
It soon became apparent that interspecies mingling was occurring in the rocks. Men and monkeys were breeding with reptiles and insects. It was all too much for religion and science both, so, in a way, what happened next had to happen. Geosimians were written off the books as outmoded, imaginative theory, not worthy of consideration. So they disappeared. Blended right back into the stratum.
