The northern caiman lizard (Dracaena guianensis) is a species of lizard found in northern South America.
The northern caiman lizard is built similarly to its cousin the tegu, with a large heavy set body and short but powerful limbs. Its head is bulky and often a red or orange color. Their jaws are heavily muscular to help aid in eating its normal prey of snails, crawfish and fresh water clams. It also has a few adaptations that help it in its watery habitat. It has a long and flattened tail, similar to its namesake, the caiman. The long tail helps the northern caiman lizard to successfully swim and dive. A clear third eyelid is thought to act like a pair of goggles underwater.
The body of the northern caiman lizard is very similar to that of a crocodile. It is typically a bright green with slight dark green banding. There are horned raised scales along the dorsal of the back. This helps to provide some protection against predators.
These lizards can reach up to 4 ft (1.2 m) long and weigh up to 10 lb (4.5 kg).

The white-faced whistling duck (Dendrocygna viduata) is a whistling duck that breeds in sub-Saharan Africa and much of South America.
This species is gregarious, and at favoured sites, the flocks of a thousand or more birds arriving at dawn are an impressive sight. As the name implies, these are noisy birds with a clear three-note whistling call.

As presently defined, the southern crested caracara is restricted to central and southern South America. It formerly included the northern crested caracara (C. cheriway) of the southern United States, Mexico, Central America and northern South America, and the extinct Guadalupe caracara (C. lutosa) as subspecies. As its relatives, it was formerly placed in the genus Polyborus.

Whisker is the oldest son of Nestor (born in Antwerp zoo, august 2012) and his mate Tasa (moved from Czech Republic).
His female siblings Winta and Waka moved to Whipsnade zoo last year to be part of a new breeding program (may 2023)
Zoo favorite Nestor moved to another zoo park in Belgium (feb 2024) . Apparently his very pure genes are important to the breeding program of West and Central African lions. Many lions kept in zoos are crossbreeds.
Lions in West- and Central Africa are regionally endangered, living in small fragmented populations in protected areas only. The main threats are habitat destruction for agricultural development (of dry savannah) and human-lion conflict.
Whisker as well as his younger brother Xesar will also move to other zoos. Xesar's female siblings Xabi and Xira will remain with their mother according to the latest news. In time they will be paired with another male.
In Belgium's KMDA (Antwerp and Planckendael zoo) newborns are named following the alphabet.
2021 was a W year. 2022 was the X year.
Newborns this year (2024) will get a name starting with a Z.

I'm rather proud of this picture because I had to focus from a distance and point right through the rather small openings in the cage. Keeping the camera steady was quite a challenge.

The Asian fairy-bluebird (Irena puella) is a medium-sized, arboreal passerine bird.
This fairy-bluebird is found in forests across tropical southern Asia, Indochina, the Greater Sundas and Palawan. Two or three eggs are laid in a small cup nest in a tree. It was described by British ornithologist John Latham in 1790. The only other member of the genus and family is the Philippine fairy-bluebird, I. cyanogastra, which replaces the Asian fairy-bluebird in most of the Philippines. Both species are considered as sacred to the Tagalog people as they are perceived as tigmamanukan omens.
The adult Asian fairy bluebird is about 24 to 27 centimetres (9.4 to 10.6 in). The male has glossy, iridescent blue upperparts, and black underparts and flight feathers. The female and first year male are entirely dull blue-green.

The laughing dove (Spilopelia senegalensis) is a small pigeon that is a resident breeder in Africa, the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent, and Western Australia where it has established itself in the wild around Perth and Fremantle. This small long-tailed dove is found in dry scrub and semi-desert habitats where pairs can often be seen feeding on the ground. A rufous and black chequered necklace gives it a distinctive pattern and is also easily distinguished from other doves by its call. Other names include laughing turtle dove, palm dove and Senegal dove while in India the name of the little brown dove is often used.

The Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus) is the largest of the eight pelican species, averaging 10-15 kg in weight, 160-190 cm in length, and over 3m in wingspan. The Dalmatian Pelican differs from the Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) in that it has curly nape feathers, grey legs and greyish-white (rather than pure white) plumage. It has a red lower mandible in the breeding season.
It breeds from southeastern Europe to Central Asia in swamps and shallow lakes.
There are around 1,000 breeding pairs in Europe, most of them in Ukraine, Russia, Greece, Romania (Danube Delta), Bulgaria and Albania (Karavasta Lagoon).
This pelican migrates short distances. In flight, it is an elegant soaring bird, with the flock moving in synchrony. The neck is then held back like a heron. As is well known, pelicans catch fish and small birds in their huge bill pouches.
Like the White Pelican, this species has declined greatly through habitat loss and persecution.

De kroeskoppelikaan (Pelcanus crispus) is de grootste van de acht pelikaansoort, gemiddeld 10 à 15 kg in gewicht, 160 à 190 cm in lengte, en meer dan 3 meter vleugelspanwijdte. Deze pelikaan verschilt van de roze pelikaan (Pelecanus onocrotalus) door de krullende nekveren, de grijze poten en het grijs-witte verenkleed (in plaats van wit-roze). In het broedseizoen is de ondersnavel rood.
De kroeskoppelikaan broedt in zuidoost Europa tot in centraal Azië in moerassen en bij ondiepe meren. Er zijn ongeveer 1.000 broedparen in Europa, de meeste van hen in Oekraïne, Rusland, Griekenland, Roemenië (Donaudelta), Bulgarije en Albanië (Karavasta Lagoon).
Het is een elegant stijgende vogel, en vliegt vaak synchroon in grote zwermen op zoek naar vissen. De hals wordt als een reiger ingetrokken. Als de pelikanen een school vissen hebben gevonden, steken ze de snavel in het water. De vissen kunnen aan de wand van de opengesperde snavels lastig ontsnappen en zitten zo in de val. Met de grote keelzak, met een inhoud van twaalf liter, scheppen ze zo vis uit het water. Met de haakvormige punt aan de snavel wordt de vis vastgehouden, die daarna in de lucht wordt gegooid, in de keelzak weer wordt opgevangen en vervolgens ingeslikt. Ook eten pelikanen kleine vogels.
Net als bij de roze pelikaan is het leefgebied voor de kroeskoppelikaan sterk kleiner geworden door overbevissing en vervolging.

Nestor and Tasa became the proud parents of 3 new lion cubs on august 29th 2022. One male and 2 females. Their names are Xesar, Xabi and Xira as this year all newborns get a name starting with X.
Their siblings born last year june 17th 2021, also 1 male and 2 females are named Whisker, Winta and Waka.
Dad Nestor was also born in Antwerp zoo (2012)

The Javan lutung, Trachypithecus auratus, also known as the ebony lutung and Javan langur, is an Old World monkey from the Colobinae subfamily. It is most commonly glossy black with a brownish tinge to its legs, sides, and "sideburns". It is found on and endemic to the island of Java, as well as on several of the surrounding Indonesian islands. The Latin word auratus in its scientific name means "golden", and refers to a less common color variant. Note that the common name golden langur is used for a different species.
