To answer last night's question of why Southerns eat black eyed peas on New Years Day: 'If you eat black eyed peas and cabbage on this date, you will be lucky & prosperous in the New Year. The black eyed peas tradition dates back to the Civil War, when Northern troops destroyed crops and stored food in the south. Black eyed peas were considered livestock feed and "not fit to eat" by the Northern soldiers, so were left alone. This helped the South survive during major food shortages."
