I stood behind my tripod and camera in my back yard last night in the dark and took photos of hummingbirds. Well, it was almost dark and that is why these photos are so grainy (noisy). I even got a few sharp photos at very low shutter speeds which surprised me. Nevertheless I deleted most of my shots. I saw at least 2 Anna's, 2 rufous, and 1 black-chinned hummingbird. They of course were chasing each other most of the time. A rufous chased the black-chinned just before I was able to snap a photo. I had a chickadee try to land on my tripod while I was taking the hummingbird photos. IMG_3493
In my one hour of light I had at my house, this friendly Anna's Hummingbird, continued to perch 5 feet away from me, so I grabbed my camera, and I got this luck shot of the bird all fluffed up.

I saw plenty of Anna's Hummingbirds during my week visiting San Marcos, California. Apparently these birds are up and down the coastline stretching as far north as Canada. But it's a new bird to me and I was pleased to capture some nice examples of these beauties! Here a male takes a restful break from his frenzied quest for food. There's some nice light on his gorget and you can clearly see the iridescent feathers on his brow.

Anna must be happy that I've scraped up all the mashed dung and hay on her floor. I try to do it every few days, before it forms a gross shag carpet.
This image of a female Anna's Hummingbird hit the sweet spot of my lens with the tree of green leaves and gaps of sky for cool background color and effect.

Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, Detroit. Michigan. It is the nation's oldest conservatory, built in 1904, designed by noted architect Albert Kahn.
A few weeks ago the male Anna's were buzz-bombing everything that moved, the weather was mild and they we staking out territory. Since winter struck our island recently the Anna's are now saving their energy for survival.

Thanks to Cheryl L. for opening her yard to those of us who wanted to see "her" hummingbirds and other birds.
My Anna's that I looked after during our long cold snap have disappeared. I saw them briefly a week ago but that was it. I assume they are on a nest somewhere or maybe there is better feeding elsewhere. Blooms are starting to open on trees and shrubs in the neighborhood so maybe they are happier with that. I will still maintain my feeder for them though.

I was lucky enough to be able to shoot in a 1974 Lotus Eclat in great condition. I'd been planning to use my car, but jumped at the chance to use this due to it's classic nature, but mostly because my car is a heap!
Lighting Info: Elinchrom Quadra head (A Channel) in Wescott Apollo softbox pressed against window camera left, Quadra head (B Channel) with reflector, plus 20 grid spot, plus warming gel behind rear window, white reflector camera right for fill. Fired by built in Quadra Skyport.
Explored at #35 on Jan 27th 2011.

According to Robert Whyte's "A field guide to Spiders of Australia", this charming girl is casually known as Anna's Opisthoncus. (Apparently a woman named Anna collected many of them).
I personally think this spider quite lovely!
