War Memorial in cemetery. Foundation stone of Angle Grove Lutheran church 8 Sep 1891 by Pastor J E Hansen, opened 8 Sep 1891, replaced 1909 by St John’s Lutheran in town of Brinkworth, demolished 1948, plaque unveiled 10 Nov 2002 to commemorate congregation founded 1875-76. First services in district were in private homes. In 1880 the Lutherans rented the Wesleyan Methodist church (known as Boucaut or Mallee Corner church 3 miles NW of Brinkworth). In 1890 they rented the Magpie Creek Bible Christian chapel (2 miles E of Brinkworth).
“Rochester . . . For some time past the Germans in this district have been holding service in the Bible Christian Chapel, Magpie Creek. They have just completed a chapel of their own at Angle Grove, and two sermons were preached on Sunday last by the Rev. Mr. Hansen (pastor of the circuit) to large congregations, the afternoon service being in English. The building, which is a neat structure, was prettily decorated with flowers and evergreens.” [Chronicle 14 Nov 1891]
“the first Lutheran members arrived in the district in 1874, and were visited by several ministers belonging to the Lutheran Synod of South Australia. Services were held in the houses of the congregation. In 1891 a church was built, but since then it had become too small, and it had now been found necessary to build a larger structure in a more central position. . . Rev. J. E. Hansen has been the minister of the congregation for over 21 years, and laid the foundation-stone of the first church some 18 years ago.” [Chronicle 24 Apr 1909]
Back to Leeds this weekend for a family wedding in St Anne's Cathedral. Despite having lived in Leeds for 8 years, this was my first trip.
I know it's unconventional to take a wide angle lens to a wedding, but I wanted to get the ceiling into the shot and I knew I had no chance of getting any classic wedding type shots (due to position and skill).
If you look closely you can see the official photographer who five seconds later got very angry with me for being in her shot. He he he.....

This is the first exercise in the Lighting 102 article at strobist.com, which examines the angle of light.
Using my very small setup (lone SB-600) I set to 1/64th power the whole time, with the speedlight zoomed to 24mm. Shutter was set to 1/200th (max flash sync on the D80) with an aperture of f/5.6, ISO of 200, using the built in flash as a commander (CLS).

La Tour de Moricq.
Imposante et robuste, la Tour de Moricq domine le Marais Poitevin de ses 15 mètres de haut depuis plus
de cinq siècles.
La Tour de Moricq est le donjon carré d'un ancien château-fort dont les écrits les plus anciens le citant remontent à 1090 sous Ciraudus de Morech, le Seigneur des lieux.
Cette forteresse fut reconstruite en 1435 à la demande du Roi Charles VII par Régnaud de Girard, Seigneur de Bazoges, son homme de confiance, sur les ruines de l'ancien château du XIIe siècle.
La tour qui gardait alors l'embouchure du Lay joua un rôle pendant la guerre de Cent Ans. La région pacifiée, elle perdit son intérêt militaire et tomba dans l'abandon.
Elle reprit du service à l'époque de la Réforme, servant tantôt aux protestants, tantôt aux catholiques. Démantelée en 1628 (tour et couronnement) elle finit en grenier à grains du XVIII au début du XXe.
Classée monument historique en 1915, elle fut achetée en 1988 par la commune d'Angles qui entreprit l'actuelle restauration de sauvegarde.
UNE TOUR-RÉSIDENCE FORTIFIÉE
Si la seigneurie de Moricq, vassale du château de Talmont, est attestée depuis la fin du XIe siècle, aucune preuve de l'existence de fortifications n'est attestée avant le XVe siècle.
Regnaud Girard, diplomate du Roi, fait l'acquisition du fief en 1430. Il édifie alors cette noble et imposante tour, conçue à la fois comme lieu de résidence seigneuriale et ouvrage défensif.
Des douves et un pont-levis, aujourd'hui disparus, complétaient le trousseau défensif de la tour, sur laquelle sont encore visibles mâchicoulis et canonnières.
Les murs massifs, de près de 2 mètres d'épaisseur, abritaient 4 niveaux de représentation et d'habitation, bâtis sur une cave. En cette fin de Moyen Age, la quête de confort était manifeste : des latrines (toilettes) desservaient trois des niveaux et chaque étage était chauffé par une voire deux cheminées.
Pourtant ce ne fut pas suffisant, et les propriétaires suivants désertèrent cette tour austère pour des demeures plus agréables.
UNE RECONVERSION INATTENDUE
La tour fut convertie en prison durant les Guerres de Religion (1565-1598), puis servit de place forte aux protestants qui cherchaient à résister à la répression menée par Louis XIII et Richelieu.
En 1628, Richelieu ordonne le démantèlement des ouvrages défensifs du territoire. La tour y perdra sa tourelle d'escalier à vis et sa porte fortifiée.
Vers 1730, lorsque Madame de la Taste, habile négociante, parvint à donner un nouvel élan commercial au port de Moricq, elle transforma la tour en grenier à blé. Dans un souci pratique et économique, une nouvelle cage d'escalier carrée est construite pour remplacer l'ancienne.
Vers 1906, suite à l'envasement naturel du Lay, le Port de Moricq cesse son activité et la Tour de Moricq est à nouveau abandonnée.
Classée au titre des Monuments Historiques depuis 1915, elle devient la propriété de la commune d'Angles en 1988. Chaque été, elle reprend vie grâce à un spectacle vivant nocturne "Les Nuits de la Tour".
Sur la façade nord de la tour sont gravés des signes étranges qui évoqueraient le plan de cache d'un trésor enfermé dans la tour. La légende parle d'un souterrain qui relierait la Tour à l'église d'Angles.
Les Chauve-souris
Un ouvrage fortifié tel que la Tour de Moricq, avec ses caves, ses combles et ses épais murs fissurés, est une aubaine pour certaines espèces de chauve-souris qui affectionnent ces sites de repos, telles que le Grand Rhinolophe ou la Pipistrelle commune.
Le Marais Poitevin peut se réjouir de compter 21 espèces de chauves-souris sur son territoire, sur les 35 espèces de France métropolitaine. Toutes sont protégées. Une trentaine de colonies de reproduction sont connues, étudiées et protégées, dont une comptant plus de500 individus.
Essentiellement insectivore, ce mammifère volant (le seul!) est un bon indicateur de la qualité de l'environnement. Il est très sensible à la transformation des paysages et aux pollutions chimiques.
De plus, la chauve-souris est notre alliée contre les mouches et moustiques. Elle s'en nourrit abondamment chaque nuit, avalant une quantité pouvant aller jusqu'à ta moitié de son poids!

Angles rest is a special area of BFAS where those who cross the rainbow bridge find their final resting place. The gate was designed by Cyrus Mejia who was one of the original founders of Best Friends. Inside the gate hundreds of memorials and markers for beloved animals and the sound of wind chimes create a touching atmosphere.

Guardian angel – motif: "Abyss".
With arms outstretched protectively, an angel draped in green and pink lush fabric watches over two children. Absorbed in their game with ball and hoop, the little boy and his sister do not seem to notice that they are dangerously close to a rocky abyss.
This motif is very popular. With slightly different color nuances in each case, the so-called "abyss picture" appears no less than four times in this collection.

Schutzengel – Motiv: „Abgrundbild“
Mit schützend ausgebreiteten Armen wacht ein in grünen und rosafarbenen üppigen Stoff gehüllter Engel über zwei Kinder. In ihr Spiel mit Ball und Reifen versunken, scheinen der kleine Junge und seine Schwester nicht zu bemerken, dass sie einem felsigen Abgrund gefährlich nahekommen.
Dieses Motiv ist sehr beliebt. Mit jeweils etwas unterschiedlicher Farbnuancierung kommt das sogenannte „Abgrundbild“ in dieser Sammlung gleich vier Mal vor.
