A later than usual CN 185 is leaving the island of Montreal as it approaches Île-Perrot with heritage unit CN 8952 leading and IC 2719 trailing.
Imagine my delight when I looked out of the kitchen window and spotted this beauty! Out came the camera and I got shots from indoors and outdoors! 😁 And it's still sitting there on my window at quarter to nine!
A highly distinctive and unusual moth, which rests with the wings folded longitudinally, looking very much like a withered autumn leaf.
The adults generally fly between May and October, in at least two generations, but can be found in any month.
The species is also a common migrant and can occur in large numbers at coastal locations.
It occurs throughout Britain, commonly in places, and more so in the south.
Wingspan 45-50 mm. so a pretty large moth!
The larvae feed on a variety of herbaceous plants.
Err ahem, windows cleaned by Serif Affinity Photo! 😂
We daren't clean the windows for real - we'd get loads of birds crashing into the glass and sometimes even killing themselves! :-(
Photo Tip of the Day
Work on your subject - angle of shooting
Here's a classic example on how changing your angle will change the impact of the image.
As beginners, a lot of photographers only see the main subject and not the background. The background is what makes or breaks the image. Learn to see through the subject and let your eyes go to the background.
In this case I choose a dark background to get a nice low key image and later when it came and sat on another perch I adjusted my angle to get the water reflection to get a sort of high key image.
Never get satisfied too quickly. Work on your subject and see through the subject at the background and make pleasing images.

The Ute Trail runs mostly through wilderness, from high on the rim down 1,200 feet to the Gunnison River.
Getting there was a trip through desert badlands, the last 2.5 miles on the "Smith Mountain Jeep Road", a rough 4WD track that tested the Elements abilities.
Didn't seem necessary to climb that much to get to the canyon rim, but there it was.

Another local photographer from last night. This is Terry Irwin from East Belfast. He spent most of the evening on his knees or lying prone to get the angles he wanted. He has some great work :)

There are some old silos downtown Sterling where someone has planted some sunflowers and a small garden. The sunflowers are about dried up but still beautiful and a great sky today.
